CAUTION
- Wear working clothing, including a cap, protective goggles, and protective shoes during operation.
- Remove contamination including dirt and corrosion before removal, installation or disassembly.
- Keep the disassembled parts in order and protect them from dust or dirt.
- Before removal, installation or disassembly, be sure to clarify the failure. Avoid unnecessary removal, installation, disassembly, and replacement.
- Use SUBARU genuine grease etc. or the equivalent. Do not mix grease etc. with that of another grade or from other manufacturers.
- Be sure to tighten fasteners including bolts and nuts to the specified torque.
- Place shop jacks or safety stands at the specified points.
- Apply grease onto sliding or revolution surfaces before installation.
- Before installing O-rings or snap rings, apply sufficient amount of grease to avoid damage and deformation.
- Before securing a part on a vice, place cushioning material such as wood blocks, aluminum plate, or shop cloth between the part and the vice.
- Before disconnecting electrical connectors, be sure to disconnect negative terminal from battery.

- Move the select lever to the "N" position.
- Remove rear exhaust pipe and muffler.
- Remove heat shield cover. (Scheme 87): Removing Heat Shield
- Disconnect cable from select lever and then remove cable bracket. (Scheme 88): Removing Cable Bracket
- Remove console box. See «REMOVAL»(ref-175480-S36444997272005042100000).
- Disconnect the connectors, then remove the four bolts to take out the selector lever assembly from the body. (Scheme 89): Removing The Four Bolts

- Mount the selector lever onto the vehicle body.
- Tighten the four bolts to install the selector lever to the vehicle body, then connect connector. Tightening torque: 13 N.m (1.3 kgf-m, 9.4 ft-lb) (Scheme 90): Installing The Four Bolts
- Install console box.
- Set location of selector lever at "N" position.
- Set location of selector arm installed on the transmission body at "N" position.
- Pass cable through selector arm pin and then connect it using a washer and snap pin.
- Attach cable clamp to transmission case with the bolts. Tightening torque: 24.5 N.m (2.5 kgf-m, 18.1 ft-lb) (Scheme 91): Attaching Cable Clamp To Transmission
- Insert the thread portion of the other inner cable and into the connector hole of the selector lever, and fix the other outer cable end to the bracket.
- Adjust the inner cable length. (1) Put connector into contact with nut. (2) Tighten nut (B). (Scheme 92) Tightening torque: 7.5 N.m (0.76 kgf-m, 5.5 ft-lb) (Scheme 92): Identifying Lock Nuts
- After completion of fitting, make sure that the selector lever operates smoothly all across the operating range.
- Connect the harnesses and check the following items. The engine starts operating when selector lever is in position "P", but not in other positions. The back-up light is lit when the selector lever is in position "R", but not in other positions.
- Check shift-lock system. Ensure ignition switch rotates from "ACC" to "LOCK" when the selector lever is set at "P". Also check that ignition key can be removed only from the "LOCK" position. Ensure selector lever moves from "P" to any other position when the brake pedal is depressed with ignition key set at "ON" or "START".

- Remove four washers and then detach rubber boot.
- Remove bolts and then remove cable bracket and plate. (Scheme 93): Removing Cable Bracket And Plate
- Twist the select lever grip and then remove select lever grip.
- Detach indicator cover.
- Disconnect connector and then remove solenoid assembly. (Scheme 94): Removing Solenoid Assembly
- Remove pattern plate.
- Remove stopper. (Scheme 95): Removing Pattern Plate & Stopper
- Tilt lever forward and pull down to separate it from frame. (Scheme 96): Separating Lever From Frame
- Remove spring. CAUTION: Wear goggles. Do not allow spring to fly out during removal.
