Conditions for Running the DTC

The vehicle must not be ON. Battery voltage must be between 10-15 V.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

The parking heater controller detects voltage greater than 15 V for at least 20 s without interruption.

The parking heater controller detects voltage less than 10 V for at least 20 s without interruption.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

The parking heater will not operate.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

  1. This DTC will be current for as long as the fault is present.
  2. When the fault is no longer present, the DTC will be a history DTC.
  3. A history DTC will clear after 50 ignition cycles.

Diagnostic Aids

If DTC P0562 or P0563 are current, diagnose those DTCs first.

Circuit/System Testing

  1. Ignition OFF, separate the K87 Parking Heater Control Module from the X150 Parking Heater Harness & Parking Heater Assembly Harness.
  2. Test for 10-15 V between harness connector terminal 1 and ground.
  3. If not in the specified range, test power circuit for an open/high resistance.
  4. Test for 10-15 V between harness connector terminal 1 and terminal 2.
  5. If not in the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
  6. If all circuits test normal, replace the K87 Parking Heater Control Module.

Battery voltage must be between 10-15 V.

The parking heater controller detects temperature greater than 125°C (257°F) at the overheat temperature sensor for at least 20 s without interruption.

The parking heater controller detects a temperature differential of 25°C (45°F) between the overheat temperature sensor and inside air temperature sensors.

The parking heater controller detects temperature greater than 130°C (266°F) at the overheat temperature sensor.

The parking heater will lock.

DTC must be cleared with the remote control.

Check for proper operation of the heater coolant pump and water flow through the engine cooling system.

  1. Ignition OFF, separate the K87 Parking Heater Control Module from the X150 Parking Heater Harness & Parking Heater Assembly Harness.
  2. Test the B168 Parking Heater Coolant Temperature Sensor by varying the sensor temperature while monitoring the sensor resistance. Compare the readings with the Sensor Resistance Table and verify that the resistance is within 5% of the specification.
  3. If not within the specified range, replace the B168 Parking Heater Coolant Temperature Sensor.
  4. Test the B169 Parking Heater Overheat Sensor by varying the sensor temperature while monitoring the sensor resistance. Compare the readings with the Sensor Resistance Table and verify that the resistance is within 5% of the specification.
  5. If not within the specified range, replace the B169 Parking Heater Overheat Sensor.
  6. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the K87 Parking Heater Control Module.

Operation Lock - Heater Overheated More than 10 Times

The vehicle must not be ON. Battery voltage must be between 10-15 V.

The parking heater controller detects that the heater has overheated more than 10 times.

The parking heater will lock.

DTC must be cleared with the remote control.

Check for proper operation of the heater coolant pump and water flow through the engine cooling system.

  1. Ignition OFF, clear all DTCs.
  2. Ensure that the DTC does not reset.
  3. If the DTC does reset, replace the K87 Parking Heater Control Module.

Dynamic Test

  1. Ignition OFF, separate the K87 Parking Heater Control Module from the X150 Parking Heater Harness & Parking Heater Assembly Harness.
  2. Ignition OFF, test for less than 5 ohms between the E46 Parking Heater Glow Plug low reference circuit terminal and ground.
  3. If greater than the specified range, replace the K87 Parking Heater Control Module.
  4. Install a test lamp between the E46 Parking Heater Glow Plug control circuit terminal and low reference circuit terminal.
  5. Command the parking heater ON and OFF using the remote control. Verify the test lamp turns ON and OFF with each command.
  6. If the test lamp is always ON, test the control circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K87 Parking Heater Control Module.
  7. If the test lamp is always OFF, test the control circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K87 Parking Heater Control Module.
  8. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the E46 Parking Heater Glow Plug.

  5. If the blower motor fan speed is less than 1 000 RPM, replace the M94 Parking Heater Blower Motor.
  6. If the M94 Parking Heater Blower Motor tests normal, replace the K87 Parking Heater Control Module.

  8. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the G17 Heater Coolant Pump.

Before every start of the heater, the operation of the individual components is tested.

The parking heater will lock.

DTC must be cleared with the remote control.

  1. Parking heater ON, verify DTC 12, 14 or 15 is not set.
  2. If either DTC is set, refer to «DTC 12, 14, OR 17»(ref-653641-S10085072472014090100000) or «DTC 15»(ref-653641-S16263349412014090100000) .
  3. Check the G26 Parking Heater Fuel Pump and filter for constrictions or lack of fuel. Refer to «FUEL PUMP TEST»(ref-653641-S05570094762014090100000) .
  4. If the fuel filter is dirty, clean or replace the filter.
  5. Check exhaust and intake air manifolds for obstructions or improper location.
  6. Check the B167 Parking Heater Combustion Sensor for values out of range. Refer to «COMBUSTION SENSOR TEST»(ref-653641-S38285171152014090100000) .
  7. If everything tests normal, replace the K87 Parking Heater Control Module.

Fuel Pump Test

  1. Ignition OFF, parking heater OFF, disconnect the fuel line at the K87 Parking Heater Control Module.
  2. Turn the parking heater ON and ensure the fuel flows in an even, bubble-free stream.
  3. Cycle the parking heater OFF and ON and record the amount of fuel that flows in 90 seconds. The fuel pump should flow 10.7-11.9 ccm in 90 seconds.
  4. If not within the specified range, replace the G26 Parking Heater Fuel Pump.

Combustion Sensor Test

  1. Ignition OFF, parking heater OFF, separate the K87 Parking Heater Control Module from the X150 Parking Heater Harness & Parking Heater Assembly Harness.
  2. Test the B167 Parking Heater Combustion Sensor by varying the sensor temperature while monitoring the sensor resistance. Compare the readings with the «FUEL OPERATED HEATER SENSOR RESISTANCE TABLE»(ref-653641-S28975669642014090100000) .
  3. If not within the specified range, replace the B167 Parking Heater Combustion Sensor.

  1. A current DTC will clear if the next start procedure is successful.
  2. DTC must be cleared with the remote control.

  2. If the fuel filter is dirty, clean or replace the filter.

The module runs the program to detect an internal fault when power up is commanded. The only requirements are voltage and ground.

The parking heater has detected an internal malfunction.

The parking heater will lock.

DTC must be cleared with the remote control.

  1. Attempt to clear the DTC with the remote control.
  2. If the DTC does not clear, replace the K87 Parking Heater Control Module.

Parking Heater External Interference Voltage

Ignition OFF. Battery voltage must be between 10-15 V.

Before every start of the heater, the operation of the individual components is tested.

The parking heater will lock.

DTC must be cleared with the remote control.

Ensure that all power related DTCs are diagnosed and corrected prior to diagnosing this DTC.

  1. Attempt to clear the DTC with the remote control.
  2. Ensure that there are no high amperage circuits near the parking heater circuits.
  3. If all circuits test normal and the DTC will not clear, replace the K87 Parking Heater Control Module.

Visual/Physical Inspection

  1. Inspect for aftermarket devices which could affect the operation of the system. Refer to «CHECKING AFTERMARKET ACCESSORIES»(ref-653659-S25218301212014090100000) .
  2. Inspect the easily accessible or visible system components for obvious damage or conditions which could cause the symptom.

Fuel Operated Heater Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Displaying and Clearing

The parking heater is equipped with an on-board diagnostic feature capable of displaying DTCs using the radio remote control display. If an error occurs in the parking heater system during operation, once the remote control has been activated these are shown with Err.

Diagnostic Trouble Code Displaying

  1. Activate the parking heater with the radio remote control, confirm operating time.
  2. Press briefly arrow key right and arrow key left at the radio remote control simultaneously. The display shows: AF:00. With the arrow key right and arrow key left you can switch between the F1-F5 fault memory.

Diagnostic Trouble Code Displaying and Clearing

  1. Activate the parking heater with the radio remote control, confirm operating time.
  2. Press briefly arrow key right and arrow key left at the radio remote control simultaneously. The display shows: AF:00. With the arrow key right and arrow key left you can switch between the F1-F5 fault memory.
  3. Press briefly arrow key right and arrow key left at the radio remote control simultaneously again. The display shows: dEL, confirm with OK.

  6. Connect the harness connector at the K87B Parking Heater Control Module - Auxiliary.
  7. Turn ON the parking heater with the radio remote control, confirm operating time. Check if the blower motor begin to run after about 5 minutes.
  8. If the blower motor did not run, turn OFF the parking heater.
  9. Disconnect the harness connector at the K87B Parking Heater Control Module - Auxiliary.
  10. Test for less than 5 ohms between the K87B Parking Heater Control Module - Auxiliary harness connector terminal 18 and X84 Data Link Connector terminal 1.
  11. If the value is greater than the specified value, test the serial data circuit for an open circuit/high resistance. If the circuit test normal, replace the K87B Parking Heater Control Module - Auxiliary.
  12. Test for more than 11 V at the K87B Parking Heater Control Module - Auxiliary harness connector terminal 4, 8, 26 and ground.
  13. If less than the specified value, test the B+ (battery positive voltage) circuit for an open/high resistance.
  14. Disconnect the harness connector at the K88 Parking Heater Remote Control Receiver and K87 Parking Heater Control Module.
  15. Ignition ON, test for less than 0.3 V between the K87B Parking Heater Control Module - Auxiliary harness connector terminal 3 and ground.
  16. If greater than the specified value, test the control circuit for a short to voltage.
  17. Ignition OFF, test for more than 500 kohms between the K87B Parking Heater Control Module - Auxiliary harness connector terminal 3 and ground.
  18. If greater than the specified value, test the control circuit for a short to ground.
  19. Test for less than 5 ohms between the K87B Parking Heater Control Module - Auxiliary harness connector terminal 3 and K87B Parking Heater Control Module - Auxiliary harness connector terminal 21.
  20. If greater than the specified value, test the control circuit for an open/high resistance.
  21. Test for less than 5 ohms between the K87B Parking Heater Control Module - Auxiliary harness connector terminal 3 and K88 Parking Heater Remote Control Receiver harness connector terminal 10.
  22. If greater than the specified value, test the control circuit for an open/high resistance.
  23. Test for less than 5 ohms between the K87B Parking Heater Control Module - Auxiliary harness connector terminal 3 and K87 Parking Heater Control Module harness connector terminal 5.
  24. If greater than the specified value, test the control circuit for an open/high resistance.
  25. Connect the harness connector at the components listed below: K87B Parking Heater Control Module - Auxiliary K87 Parking Heater Control Module K88 Parking Heater Remote Control Receiver
  26. Remove the KR106 Parking Heater Relay.
  27. Connect a test lamp between the KR106 Parking Heater Relay control circuit terminal 3 and terminal 5.
  28. Turn the parking heater ON/OFF with the radio remote control, confirm operating time. The test lamp should turn ON/OFF when changing between the commanded states.
  29. If the test lamp is always ON, test the control circuit for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K87B Parking Heater Control Module - Auxiliary.
  30. If the test lamp is always OFF, test the control circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K87B Parking Heater Control Module - Auxiliary.
  31. If all circuits test normal, replace the K87B Parking Heater Control Module - Auxiliary or the K87 Parking Heater Control Module.

Refrigerant Leak Testing

Note. General Motors vehicles are now manufactured with fluorescent dye installed directly into the air conditioning (A/C) system.

The fluorescent dye mixes and flows with the polyalkylene glycol (PAG) oil throughout the refrigerant system.

Verifying some passive leaks may require using a halogen leak detector, even though the A/C system contains fluorescent dye.

The only time adding additional fluorescent dye is required is after flushing the A/C system.
