Gear Selector Mechanism (Automatic): Other Saab 9-3 I

To fit

  1. Fit the selector lever housing in place.
  2. Connect the cable to the selector lever housing and fit the clamp.
  3. Plug in the electric connection to the gear lever housing and ignition switch while putting the gear lever housing in place. Refit the 2 wiring harness cable ties and the cover securing the wiring harness to the lever housing.
  4. Tighten the lever housing and connect the air duct.
  5. Press in the pin at the same time as the ball engages in the end of the wire. Support the end of the wire.
  6. Fit the E-circlip and anti-rattle clip.
  7. Fit the air duct to the rear air vent and tape the electric lead to the remote control receiver.
  8. Fit the center and floor consoles.
  9. Adjust the position of the cable.

Scheme 79: To remove
  1. Remove Selector lever housing. IMPORTANT: When working on a dismantled selector lever housing, the selector lever should be protected with foam rubber or the like.
  2. Remove Selector lever casing.
  3. Cut the cable tie holding the lead for the lighting button in place.
  4. Cut the cable tie securing the lead to the electromagnet (cars with shift-lock).
  5. Tap out the cable of the electromagnet from the connector, pins 5 and 6 (cars with Shift-lock). Use 85 80 151 Kit, removing tool, connector pins. Remove the gear position indicator display. Remove the screws securing the ignition switch.
  6. Drill out the rivets.
  7. Dismantle the selector lever housing.
  8. Remove the selector lever retaining bolt.
  9. Remove the selector lever with holder from the base plate.
  10. Remove the lock washer and tap out the spacer sleeve.
  11. Detach the selector lever from the holder.

Scheme 80: To fit
  1. Fit the selector lever in the holder.
  2. Insert the spacer sleeve through the selector lever, ignition switch retaining catch, gear position detent retaining catch and holder.
  3. Fit the selector lever with holder into the groove at the front of the base plate.
  4. Fit the bolt and tighten it.
  5. Fit the selector lever and ignition switch in the selector lever housing. Place the sport button's lead in the clip. NOTE: The selector lever housing does not need to be riveted together.
  6. Screw the ignition switch in place.
  7. Fit a cable tie to hold the lead for the lighting in place.
  8. Connect the electromagnet (cars with shift-lock).
  9. Insert a cable tie through the hole in the selector lever and round the electromagnet's and WINTER button's leads.
  10. Fit the selector lever casing, see «FITTING»(ref-206778-S28040784472005112600000) .
  11. Fit the selector lever housing, see «FITTING»(ref-206778-S27645353962005112600000) .

  1. Move the selector lever to position N or D.
  2. Remove the screw securing the front part of the selector lever casing.
  3. Remove the front part.
  4. Press up the SPORT button from below.
  5. Unsolder the SPORT button. Place some form of protection under it so that drops of solder do not fall onto the center console.
  6. Remove the clip and pull up the release button together with the rear part of the selector lever casing. The electric leads remain in the lever casing.

  1. Position the electrical cables in the lower part of the lever casing and fit them to the lever. Grease the entire U-profile in which the catch runs with part no. 82 93 243. Distribute the grease evenly on the three inner surfaces so that the catch runs freely. IMPORTANT: Only grease with the stated part no. may be used owing to the temperature tolerance.
  2. Fit the release button and press it down together with the lever casing until the screw hole is opposite the hole in the selector lever.
  3. Insert the leads through the hole and solder them to the SPORT button. Place some form of protection under it so that drops of solder do not fall onto the center console.
  4. Press the SPORT button into place.
  5. Run the leads in a loop so that they will not be nipped and press them into the groove behind the release button.
  6. Fit the release button's clip.
  7. Fit the front part of the selector lever casing.
  8. Screw the selector lever together.
  1. Solder on the wiring and thread the protective tubing over the soldered joint.
  2. Press the WINTER button into the indicator display.
  3. Fit the indicator display and the rim.

  1. Remove the selector lever housing, see «SELECTOR LEVER HOUSING»(ref-206778-S23801711042005112600000) . IMPORTANT: When working on a dismantled selector lever housing, the selector lever should be protected with foam rubber or the like.
  2. Cut the cable ties.
  3. Remove the pins for the electromagnet from the connector, pins 5 and 6 in the 6- pin connector and pin 2 in the 2-pin connector. NOTE: Note the location of the 3 pins in the connector.
  4. Drill out the rivets, using a three-millimeter bit.
  5. Separate the upper and lower parts of the selector lever housing slightly at the front and undo the screws on the electromagnet.
  6. Undo the lever on top of the electromagnet and remove the electromagnet.

  1. Fit the electromagnet to the lever.
  2. Fit the electromagnet's two screws.
  3. Fit the two parts of the selector lever housing together.
  4. Rivet the parts of the selector lever housing together.
  5. Connect the leads on the electromagnet.
  6. Secure the leads with a cable tie.
  7. Fit the selector lever housing, see «SELECTOR LEVER HOUSING»(ref-206778-S23801711042005112600000) .
  1. Screw the ignition switch connector in place. Use Loctite 242 thread-locking adhesive, part number 74 96 268, on the screws.
  2. Fit the selector lever housing, see «SELECTOR LEVER HOUSING»(ref-206778-S23801711042005112600000) .

  2. Dismantle the selector lever casing, see «SELECTOR LEVER CASING»(ref-206778-S24690409032005112600000) .
  3. Cut the cable tie holding the lead for the lighting button in place.
  4. Cut the cable tie securing the lead to the electromagnet (cars with ignition lock).
  5. Remove pins 5 and 6 to the electromagnet lead from the connector (cars with ignition lock).
  6. Remove the shift indicator display. Remove the screws securing the ignition switch.
  7. Drill out the rivets.
  8. Dismantle the selector lever housing.
  9. Remove the selector lever retaining bolt.
  10. Remove the selector lever with holder from the base plate.
  11. Tap out the spacer sleeve.
  12. Detach the selector lever from the holder.
  13. Remove the expanding pin securing the cable ferrule.
  14. Remove the clip from the locking pin.
  15. Withdraw the cable from the holder.

  1. Connect the cable to the holder and locking pin.
  2. Fit the expanding pin securing the cable ferrule.
  3. Fit the clip in the locking pin.
  4. Fit the selector lever in the holder.
  5. Fit the spacer sleeve through the selector lever, ignition switch lock catch, shift-lock catch and the holder.
  6. Fit the selector lever with holder into the groove at the front of the base plate.
  7. Fit the bolt and tighten it.
  8. Fit the selector lever and ignition switch in the selector lever housing. Place the sport button's lead in the clip.
  9. Rivet the parts of the selector lever housing together.
  10. Screw the ignition switch in place. Fit the shift indicator display.
  11. Fit a cable tie to hold the lead for the lighting in place.
  12. Connect the wires to the electromagnet (cars with ignition lock).
  13. Fit a cable tie through the hole in the selector lever and around the electromagnet cables.
  14. Fit the ignition switch lock cylinder, see «IGNITION SWITCH CYLINDER»(ref-206778-S04483154822005112600000) .
  15. Assemble the selector lever casing, see «SELECTOR LEVER CASING»(ref-206778-S24690409032005112600000) .
  16. Fit the selector lever housing, see «SELECTOR LEVER HOUSING»(ref-206778-S23801711042005112600000) .

Scheme 88: To remove
  1. Remove the transponder.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
  3. Bend a welding rod.
  4. Remove the lock cylinder by pressing in the catch with the welding rod and withdrawing the cylinder straight up.
  1. Fit the lock cylinder in place and press it well home. Make sure it is firmly located.
  2. Fit the transponder.
  1. Fit the jalousie with indicator display. The mat side of the indicator strip must be facing upwards.
  2. Press on the indicator display.
  3. Assemble the selector lever casing, see «SELECTOR LEVER CASING»(ref-206778-S24690409032005112600000) .
  4. Fit the rim around the indicator display.

  1. Unplug the transmission control module connector.
  2. Check to make sure that the car does not move when the selector lever is in position N.
  3. Check to make sure that the car does not move when the selector lever is in position N.
  4. Check to make sure that the P-interlock engages properly in position P.

Scheme 96: Shift-lock function

Shift-lock

Shift-lock means that the brake pedal must be depressed and the ignition key turned to position ON before the selector lever can be moved from the P position.

Anti-theft/Starter motor interlock function

The ignition key must be inserted in the ignition and turned to position OFF before the selector lever can be moved from the P position.

Gear position detent function

The release button on the selector lever must be kept depressed to be able to move the lever between the various positions (PRND321).

Shift-lock function

When the shift-lock function is operative, the brake pedal must be depressed and the ignition switch turned to the ON position before the selector lever can be moved out of position P. This function is accomplished by means of a microswitch and a solenoid.

The microswitch is actuated by a cam on the selector lever and is closed only when the selector lever is in position P.

The solenoid blocks the selector lever's segment mechanically if it is not activated.

With the ignition switch in position ON and the brake pedal depressed (brake light switch closed), the solenoid is supplied with power via the microswitch (selector lever in position P). The solenoid is activated and the detent for the selector lever segment is released. The solenoid is grounded to grounding point G42, whereby the selector lever can be moved from the P position.

Scheme 97: Shift-lock function

To disable the SHIFT-LOCK function in the event of power loss, proceed as follows

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
  2. Depress the oblong button at the side of the selector lever to release the SHIFT-LOCK function.

When this function is operative, the ignition key must be inserted in the ignition switch and turned at least to the OFF position before it will be possible to move the selector lever out of position P.

The interlock function consists of the ignition switch, a locking pin and a mechanical cable connecting these components.

When the selector lever is in position P and the ignition switch is in the OFF position, the cable pulls the locking pin into a tooth space to lock the selector lever in position P.

Gear position detent

A catch on the selector lever must be activated before it will be possible to move the lever between the different positions (PRND321).

This function consists of a catch, a locking pin and a rod which connects these components. The locking pin blocks the lever in the different positions and when the catch is activated the selector lever is released from the locking segment and can then be moved to the desired position.

Selector lever position sensor - gear engaged

The selector lever position sensor is mounted in the transmission casing. It contains the reversing light switch, starting interlock switch and switches which tell the control module which gear is engaged.

The selector lever position sensor is a position switch that is supplied with current via the +15 circuit. A number of slip contacts supply the sensor's outputs with current. Combinations of the A, B, C and PA terminals correspond to the current selector lever position (see SELECTOR LEVER POSITIONS ). The slip contacts may be either closed (=ON) or open (=OFF).

SELECTOR LEVER POSITIONS

The following table describes the relationship between the selector lever position sensor's internal terminals A, B, C and PA, the pins in connector H10-1 and the control module.

SELECTOR LEVER POSITION SENSOR'S INTERNAL TERMINALS PINS AND CONTROL MODULE RELATIONSHIP

To ensure that the control module receives accurate information, it is important for the sensor to be correctly adjusted. Special tool 87 92 467 should be used for adjusting the sensor.

Selector Lever position sensor - starting interlock switch

On cars with automatic transmission, the starting interlock switch (77) is integrated with the selector lever position sensor.

The switch (77) pins 1 and 5 are used to control stater relay.

Switch Pin 1 in supplied with B+ is fed Via the starter relay to TWICE, which grounds the input if the criteria have been fulfilled (correct key).

In all other gear position the switch is open, i.e. the starter relay is not supplied with current.
