Gear Selector Mechanism (Automatic): Overview Saab 9-3 I

  1. Remove the battery cover and the battery.
  2. Remove the rim. Remove the center and floor consoles .
  3. Detach the air duct to the rear air vent.
  4. Remove the E-circlip and anti-rattle clip.
  5. Drive out the pin while removing the end of the cable from the ball.
  6. Remove the clamp located on the locking catches.
  7. Carefully press the catches securing the cable ferrule towards each other and remove the cable from the bracket.
  8. Remove the bracket for the A/C and servo pipes.
  9. Remove the nut for the lever and lift the lever off the gearbox.
  10. Remove the clamp at the cable bracket.
  11. Remove the cable ferrule from the bracket on the gearbox.
  12. Remove the rubber grommet by first pressing it into the car and then pulling it diagonally through the hole.
  13. Pull out the whole cable through the engine bay.

Scheme 65: To fit
  1. Fit the cable from the engine bay. Make sure it is positioned correctly in the gear-lever housing and press in the rubber grommet.
  2. Connect the cable to the gear-lever housing and fit the clamp.
  3. Tap in the pin at the same time as the ball enters the end of the cable.
  4. Fit the E-circlip and the anti-rattle clip.
  5. Refit the air duct to the rear air vent.
  6. Fit the center and floor consoles. Fit the rim.
  7. Attach the selector cable to its mounting and fit the clamp.
  8. Fit the lever to the gear selector.
  9. Fit the bracket for the A/C and servo pipes.
  10. Adjust the position of the cable, see «CHECKING AND ADJUSTMENT, SELECTOR LEVER CABLE»(ref-206778-S38555997212005112600000) .
  11. Fit the battery and battery cover.

Scheme 66: Checking and adjustment, selector lever cable
  1. Check that the play in the selector lever is the same in position N as in position D. If it is not, adjust the cable as follows.
  2. Move the selector lever to position P (inside the car).
  3. Lift up the cable adjustment clasp.
  4. Move the selector lever to position P.
  5. Roll the car until the P interlock engages.
  6. Press the selector lever (in the car) backwards and press down the adjustment clasp so that it locks the cable ferrule. NOTE: There is play in position P (inside the car). Press the selector lever backwards while pressing down the clasp.
  7. Make sure the play in position N and D is the same.

Scheme 67: To remove
  1. Remove the center and floor consoles.
  2. Detach the air duct to the rear air vent.
  3. Remove the E-circlip and anti-rattle clip.
  4. Drive out the pin while removing the end of the cable from the ball.
  5. Remove the screws securing the gear lever housing.
  6. Unplug the selector lever housing's connector.
  7. Lift up the selector lever housing, undo the cable ties (2 pcs.) securing the wiring harness for the ignition switch and airbag, unplug the connection from the ignition switch.
  8. Remove the clamp located beside the locking catches.
  9. Carefully press the catches securing the cable ferrule towards each other and remove the cable from the bracket.
  10. Lift out the selector lever housing.
