Starter, Check (Installed)

Battery - charged and connected.

Battery terminals - tight, unbroken, not oxidized.

Ground connections for alternator, engine, body, battery - satisfactory.

Positive cable battery/starter/alternator - tight, unbroken.

Voltage drop in leads during starting should be less than 0.5 V.

If voltage drop is greater than 0.5 V, determine cause and rectify.

Tester for voltage and current measurement according to operating instructions.

Red connector to battery positive terminal.

Black connector to battery negative terminal.

Clamp-on probe to cable between battery and starter - arrow on probe positions away from battery.

Starter function - engage top gear, apply foot and parking brakes, and engage starter using starter key switch.

Note voltage and current.

If current consumption is too high or too low, rectify cause or replace starter.

Maximum duration of test 5 seconds to prevent overheating.
