Belt Tensioner
Automatic tensioners are calibrated to provide the correct amount of tension to the belt for a given accessory drive system. Unless a spring or damping band within the tensioner assembly breaks, or some other mechanical part of the tensioner fails, there is no need to check the tensioner for correct tension.

- 3. Check the belt for cracks. Up to 15 cracks in a rib over a distance of 100 mm (4.0 in) can be considered acceptable. If cracks exceed this standard, install a new belt. V-Ribbed Serpentine Belt With Cracks Across Ribs
- 4. The condition of the V-ribbed belt should be compared against the illustration and appropriate action taken. Small scattered deposits of rubber material. This is not a concern, therefore, installation of a new belt is not required. Longer deposit areas building up to 50% of the rib height. This is not considered a durability concern, but it can result in excessive noise. If noise is apparent, install a new belt. Heavy deposits building up along the grooves resulting in a possible noise and belt stability concern. If heavy deposits are apparent, install a new belt. - 5. There should be no chunks missing from the belt ribs. If the belt shows any evidence of this, install a new accessory drive belt. Belt Tensioner - Mechanical
The only mechanical check that needs to be made is a check for tensioner stick, grab or bind.
- With the engine off, check routing of the accessory drive belt. See «ACCESSORY DRIVE BELT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION - 2.5L»(ref-348658-S27114047842009112700000) or «ACCESSORY DRIVE BELT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION - 3.0L»(ref-348663-S33710953952009112700000) .
- Using a suitable, commercially available serpentine belt tensioner release tool, release the tension on the belt and detach the accessory drive belt in the area of the tensioner. NOTE: The accessory drive belt tensioner spring is very strong and requires substantial force to release.
- Using the release tool, move the tensioner from its relaxed position, through its full stroke and back to the relaxed position to make sure there is no stick, grab or bind, and to make sure that there is tension on the tensioner spring.
- Rotate the tensioner pulley by hand and check for a binding, contaminated or seized condition.
- Inspect the area surrounding the accessory drive belt tensioner for oil leaks or contamination and repair any leaks.
- If the accessory drive belt tensioner does not meet the criteria in the previous step, install a new tensioner. If the accessory drive belt tensioner meets the criteria in the previous step, proceed to test the tensioner dynamically.
Belt Tensioner - Dynamic
The accessory belt tensioner can be checked dynamically as follows
- With the engine running, observe the accessory drive belt tensioner movement. The accessory drive belt tensioner should move (respond) when the air conditioning clutch cycles (if equipped), or when the engine is accelerated rapidly. If the accessory drive tensioner movement is excessive without A/C clutch cycling or engine acceleration, check belt rideout. Excessive belt rideout (uneven depth of grooves in the belt) can cause excessive accessory drive belt tensioner movement. Check rideout condition by installing a new belt. If excessive accessory drive belt tensioner movement still exists, install a new accessory drive belt tensioner.

NOTE: If a component fails to meet the specifications, it is necessary to install a new component or refinish the component. - Use a Valve/Clutch Spring Pressure Gauge to check the valve spring for correct strength at the specified valve spring length. If out of specification, install new components as necessary. - Measure the out-of-square on each valve spring. Turn the valve spring and observe the space between the top of the valve spring and the square. Install a new valve spring if out of square.

- Inspect the following valve areas: the end of the stem for grooves or scoring. the valve face and the edge for pits, grooves or scores. the valve head for signs of burning, erosion, warpage and cracking. the valve margin for wear.

- Use a ball gauge to determine the inner diameter of the valve guides in 2 directions at the top, middle and bottom of the valve guide. NOTE: Valve guides tend to wear in an hourglass pattern The ball guide can be inserted into the combustion chamber side of the valve guide, if necessary.
- Measure the ball gauge with a micrometer.
- If the valve guide is not within specifications, install a new cylinder head assembly. NOTE: See «SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-348670-S01265508462009112700000) for the specification.
Valve And Seat Refacing Measurements
Note. After grinding valves or valve seats, check valve clearance.

- Check the valve head and seat. Check valve angles. Check margin width. Make sure margin width is within specification.

- Measure the valve seat width. If necessary, grind the valve seat to specification. Measure the intake valve seat width. Measure the exhaust valve seat width. Recheck the valve spring installed length after the seats have been ground, and shim the valve springs as necessary to achieve the correct spring length. - Remove the 5 bolts, the pin-type retainer (not shown in figure) and the RH splash shield. To install, tighten to 9 N.m {0.9 kgf.m, 80 in.lbf}.
- Use a feeler gauge to measure the clearance of each valve and record its location. NOTE: Turn the engine clockwise only, and only use the crankshaft bolt. NOTE: Before removing the camshafts, measure the clearance of each valve at base circle, with the lobe pointed away from the tappet. Failure to measure all clearances prior to removing the camshafts will necessitate repeated removal and installation and wasted labor time.
- Select tappets using this formula: tappet thickness = measured clearance + the base tappet thickness - most desirable thickness. Select the tappets and mark the installation location. NOTE: The number on the valve tappet only reflects the digits that follow the decimal. For example, a tappet with the number 0.650 has the thickness of 3.650 mm. The nominal desired mid range clearance is: intake: 0.25 mm (0.0095 in). exhaust: 0.30 mm (0.0115 in). The acceptable clearances after being fully installed are: intake: 0.22-0.28 mm (0.008-0.011 in). exhaust: 0.27-0.33 mm (0.010-0.013 in). Select tappets using this formula: tappet thickness = measured clearance + the existing tappet thickness - nominal clearance. Select the closest tappet size to the ideal tappet thickness available and mark the installation location.
- If any tappets do not measure within specifications, install new tappets in these locations. See «VALVE TAPPETS REMOVAL/INSTALLATION - 2.5L»(ref-348658-S04185467092009112700000) .
VALVE STEM TO VALVE GUIDE CLEARANCE
Note. Valve stem diameter must be within specifications before checking valve stem to valve guide clearance.

- Install a Valve Guide Clearance Gauge 303-004 on the valve stem and install a Dial Indicator Gauge with Holding Fixture 100-002. Lower the valve until the clearance gauge contacts the upper surface of the valve guide. NOTE: If necessary, use a magnetic base.
- Move the Valve Guide Clearance Gauge toward the indicator and zero the indicator. Move the Valve Guide Clearance Gauge away from the indicator and note the reading. The reading will be DOUBLE the valve stem-to-valve guide clearance. NOTE: See «SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-348670-S01265508462009112700000) for the specification.

- Inspect camshaft lobes for pitting or damage in the contact area. Minor pitting is acceptable outside the contact area. If excessive pitting or damage is present, install new components as necessary. - Use a Dial Indicator Gauge with Holding Fixture to measure camshaft intake/exhaust lobe lift. Rotate the camshaft and subtract the lowest indicator reading from the highest indicator reading to figure the camshaft lobe lift. NOTE: See «SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-348670-S01265508462009112700000) .

- Measure each camshaft bearing in 2 directions. Subtract the camshaft journal diameter from the camshaft bearing diameter. - Using a special tool, measure camshaft end play.
- Position the camshaft to the rear of the cylinder head.
- Zero the indicator.
- Move the camshaft to the front of the cylinder head. Note and record the camshaft end play. If camshaft end play exceeds specifications, install a new camshaft and recheck end play. If camshaft end play exceeds specification after camshaft installation, install a new cylinder head. NOTE: See «SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-348670-S01265508462009112700000) for the specification.

- Inspect the roller for flat spots or scoring. If any damage is found, inspect the camshaft lobes and hydraulic lash adjuster for damage.

- Inspect the valve tappet for damage, especially in the indicated areas. If any damage is evident, inspect the camshaft lobes and valves for damage. Install new components as necessary.

- Using a straightedge and a feeler gauge, inspect the cylinder head for flatness in the sequence shown. If the cylinder head is distorted, install a new cylinder head. NOTE: Make sure all cylinder head surfaces are clear of any gasket material, RTV, oil and coolant. The cylinder head surface must be clean and dry before running a flatness check. Use a straightedge that is calibrated by the manufacturer to be flat within 0.005 mm (0.0002 inch) per running foot of length, such as Snap-On® GA438A or equivalent. For example, if the straightedge is 61 cm (24 in) long, the machined edge must be flat within 0.010 mm (0.0004 in) from end to end. - Position the crankshaft to the rear of the cylinder block.
- Zero the indicator.

If crankshaft end play exceeds specifications, install a new crankshaft thrust washer or crankshaft thrust main bearing. - Clean the exhaust manifold using a suitable solvent. Use a plastic scraping tool to clean the gasket sealing surfaces.
- Using the precision straight edge and a feeler gauge, check the exhaust manifold sealing surface for warpage. If the warpage is greater than 0.76 mm (0.0299 in), install a new exhaust manifold. NOTE: New exhaust manifold gaskets studs, nuts and/or bolts must be installed when an exhaust manifold is serviced. NOTE: Use a straightedge that is calibrated by the manufacturer to be flat within 0.005 mm (0.0002 in) per running foot of length, such as Snap-On® GA-438A or equivalent. For example, if the straightedge is 61 cm (24 in) long, the machined edge must be flat within 0.0010 mm (0.0004 in) from end to end.
