Draining
| WARNING | Always allow the engine to cool before opening the cooling system. Do not unscrew the coolant pressure relief cap when the engine is operating or the cooling system is hot. The cooling system is under pressure; steam and hot liquid can come out forcefully when the cap is loosened slightly. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury. |
| CAUTION | The coolant must be recovered in a suitable, clean container for reuse. If the coolant is contaminated, it must be recycled or disposed of correctly. Using contaminated coolant may result in damage to the engine or cooling system components. |
| CAUTION | The engine cooling system is filled with Mazda Premium Gold Engine Coolant. |
Note. The addition of Cooling System Stop Leak Pellets or equivalent meeting Mazda specification darkens Mazda Premium Gold Engine Coolant from yellow to golden tan.
Note. Less than 80% of coolant capacity can be recovered with the engine in the vehicle. Dirty, rusty or contaminated coolant requires replacement.

- Release the pressure in the cooling system by slowly turning the pressure relief cap one half turn counterclockwise. When the pressure is released, remove the pressure relief cap.
- Remove the 7 retainers and the LH splash shields.
- Place a suitable container below the radiator draincock. Open the draincock and allow to drain. Close the draincock after draining.
- Install the LH splash shield and the 7 retainers.
COOLING SYSTEM FLUSHING - HYBRID
- Remove the radiator. See «RADIATOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION - HYBRID»(ref-373089-S15033411462010100600000) .
- Backflush the radiator with the radiator in an upside-down position and a high-pressure hose in the lower hose location. CAUTION: Radiator internal pressure must not exceed 138 kPa (20 psi). Damage to the radiator can result.
- Remove the thermostat housing. See «THERMOSTAT HOUSING REMOVAL/INSTALLATION - HYBRID»(ref-373089-S17469598612010100600000) . NOTE: The thermostat and housing are serviced as an assembly.
- Position a high-pressure water hose into the engine through the engine return and backflush the engine.

Scheme 994: DEGAS BOTTLE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION - HYBRID
- Release the pressure in the cooling system by slowly turning the pressure relief cap one half turn counterclockwise. When the pressure is released, remove the pressure relief cap. WARNING: Always allow the engine to cool before opening the cooling system. Do not unscrew the coolant pressure relief cap when the engine is operating or the cooling system is hot. The cooling system is under pressure; steam and hot liquid can come out forcefully when the cap is loosened slightly. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury. NOTE: The degas bottle has 2 separate reservoirs. The front (larger) reservoir is part of the engine cooling system. The rear (smaller) reservoir is part of the Motor Electronics Cooling System (MECS).
- Using the hose clamp pliers, clamp the engine coolant return hose and the motor electronics coolant return hose.
- Using a suitable suction device, siphon the coolant from the degas bottle.
- Disconnect the MECS coolant vent hose.
- Disconnect the 2 engine coolant vent hoses.
- Detach the pin-type retainer from the degas bottle.
- Remove the degas bottle bolt and nut. To install, tighten the nut to 6 N.m {0.6 kgf.m, 53 in.lbf}.
- Lift the degas bottle up and disconnect the engine coolant and MECS coolant return hoses. Remove the degas bottle.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.
- Fill the degas bottle. See «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING - HYBRID»(ref-373089-S41502309662010100600000) .

- Disconnect the upper radiator hose from the MECS radiator.
- Remove the 2 MECS radiator-to-engine radiator bolts and position the MECS radiator aside. To install, tighten to 6 N.m {0.6 kgf.m, 53 in.lbf}.
- Remove the 2 A/C condenser-to-radiator bolts and position aside the A/C condenser from the radiator. To install, tighten to 10 N.m {1.0 kgf.m, 89 in.lbf}.
- Disconnect the lower radiator hose from the radiator.
- Disconnect the degas bottle return hose from the radiator.
- Disconnect the engine coolant vent hose from the radiator.
- Disconnect the upper radiator hose from the radiator.
- Remove the radiator.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.
- Fill and bleed the cooling system. See «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING - HYBRID»(ref-373089-S41502309662010100600000) .
