  4. Place the steering wheel in the straight-ahead position and the ignition key in the OFF position.

  13. Remove the bolts and the lateral support crossmember.

  15. Remove the catalytic converter inlet pipe-to-catalytic manifold converter nuts and remove the pipe.
  16. Detach the exhaust hanger insulator from the subframe.
  17. Remove the brake hose retainer and the ABS sensor retaining bolt from the LH strut.
  18. Disconnect the LH suspension. Remove the nut and disconnect the stabilizer bar link. Remove and discard the tie-rod end retaining nut. Remove the lower control arm knuckle bolt.
  19. Remove the brake hose retainer and the ABS sensor retaining bolt from the RH strut.
  20. Disconnect the RH suspension. Remove the nut and disconnect the stabilizer bar link. Remove and discard the tie-rod end retaining nut. Remove the lower control arm knuckle bolt.
  21. Using the special tool, disconnect the LH and RH tie-rod end from the steering knuckle. NOTE: LH shown in illustration, RH similar.
  22. Separate the LH and RH lower control arms from the lower ball joints and position the steering knuckles aside.
  23. Drain the transaxle fluid. See «TRANSAXLE FLUID DRAIN AND REFILL - HYBRID»(ref-373075-S17785042202010100600000) .
  24. Using the special tools, separate the LH halfshaft from the transaxle and secure the halfshaft aside.
  25. Using the special tools, remove the RH halfshaft from the intermediate shaft and secure the halfshaft aside.
  26. Remove the intermediate shaft retaining nuts and the intermediate shaft.

  2. Remove the catalytic converter bracket bolts.
  3. Remove the bolts and the power transfer unit (PTU)-to-engine bracket. NOTE: Catalytic converter manifold removed for clarity.
  4. Remove the PTU heat shield bolts and the PTU heat shield.
  5. Disconnect the PTU vent hose and position it aside.
  6. Remove the PTU-to-transaxle bolts and remove the PTU. NOTE: Catalytic converter manifold removed for clarity.

  1. Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core.
  2. Disconnect the upper radiator hose from the radiator.
  3. Disconnect the brake booster vacuum tube from the brake booster.
  4. Disconnect the PCM center electrical connector. Remove the wiring harness retainer nut.
  5. If equipped, disconnect the block heater electrical connector. Detach the harness retainer clips and position harness aside.
  6. Disconnect the engine control harness electrical connector.
  7. Disconnect the upper evaporative emissions (EVAP) tube quick connect coupling from the purge valve. See «EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS CANISTER PURGE VALVE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION - HYBRID»(ref-373104-S20373044292010100600000) .
  8. Remove the selector lever cable fasteners from the stud bolts on the transaxle.
  9. Remove the selector lever cable fastener from the intake manifold.
  10. Remove the stud bolt and disconnect the transaxle harness electrical connector.
  11. Disconnect the low voltage electrical connectors and the engine harness-to-body harness retainer.
  12. Disconnect the coolant vent hose.
  13. Release the locking tab and disconnect the DC-to-DC converter electrical connector and 2 wire harness retainers (1 shown in illustration).
  14. Remove the nuts and position the DC-to-DC converter aside.
  15. Disconnect the transaxle coolant temperature sensor electrical connector and pin-type retainer.
  16. Disconnect the transaxle coolant hoses.
  17. Remove the bolts and the transaxle control snow shield.
  18. Disconnect the selector lever cable. Release the selector lever cable from the manual control lever. Remove the nuts from the selector lever cable bracket.
  19. Remove the harness fasteners, the nut and the ground cable.
  20. Disconnect the motor electronics cooling system (MECS) pump electrical connector and detach the harness retainer.
  21. Remove the bolts and position the MECS pump and ground strap aside.
  22. Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connector and remove the 3 bolts. Position the A/C compressor aside and support the compressor with a length of mechanic's wire.
  23. Remove the bolts and disconnect the auxiliary coolant pump electrical connector. Position the auxiliary coolant pump aside.
  24. Disconnect the lower radiator hose from the radiator.
  25. Remove the lower insulator through bolt.
  26. Remove the rear roll restrictor-to-crossmember through bolt.
  27. Remove the nut, bolts and the engine support crossmember. Discard the nut.
  28. Remove the 2 transaxle-to-engine bolts. NOTE: The transaxle-to-engine bolts differ in length. Mark the bolts for correct installation.
  29. Remove the transaxle-to-engine bolts. NOTE: The transaxle-to-engine bolts differ in length. Mark the bolts for correct installation.

  1. Remove the rear insulator through bolt.
  2. Using a holding device, hold the steering wheel in the straight-ahead position. NOTE: Use a suitable steering wheel holding device.
  3. Remove and discard the steering column coupling pinch bolt and separate the coupling from the steering gear. CAUTION: Do not allow the steering wheel to rotate while the intermediate shaft is disconnected or damage to the clockspring can result. If there is evidence that the shaft has rotated, the clockspring must be removed and recentered. See «CLOCKSPRING REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-373086-S23565638502010100600000) .
  4. Remove the lower support insulator.
  5. Using the special tool, support the subframe.
  6. Loosen the 2 subframe bolts. NOTE: Do not allow the front subframe rear bolts to come out of the lower control arm bushing. NOTE: RH shown in illustration, LH similar.
  7. Remove the 2 subframe nuts and lower the subframe. Remove the subframe from the special tool. NOTE: RH shown in illustration, LH similar.
  8. Using the special tools, secure the engine to the lift. NOTE: Due to the weight of the transaxle, special care should be taken to mount the powertrain securely to the lift.
  9. Remove the engine mount bracket bolt.
  10. Remove the nuts and the engine mount bracket.
  11. Remove the upper insulator bracket bolts and remove the bracket.
  12. Remove the upper insulator through bolt.
  13. Remove the upper insulator nuts.
  14. Remove the upper insulator.
  15. Lower the engine and transaxle from the vehicle.
  16. Using the special tools, remove the engine and transaxle from the lift.
  17. Release the locking tab and disconnect the high voltage wiring harness electrical connector.
  18. Remove the remaining engine-to-transaxle bolts and separate the engine and transaxle. NOTE: The transaxle-to-engine bolts differ in length, mark the bolts for correct installation.
  19. Remove the bolts and the transaxle damper. Tighten bolts to 90 N.m {9.0 kgf.m, 66 ft.lbf}. CAUTION: The damper contains a clutch which is designed to slip briefly during vehicle operation. It is essential that no grease, oil or cleaning solvents be allowed to contaminate the slip clutch. Do not use grease on transmission input shaft. Should the damper become contaminated, it must be replaced. NOTE: If replacing the transaxle, remover the lower insulator bracket for installation on the new transaxle.

Installation

  1. Install the transaxle damper. Tighten to 29 N.m {2.9 kgf.m, 21 ft.lbf}. CAUTION: The damper contains a clutch which is designed to slip briefly during vehicle operation. It is essential that no grease, oil or cleaning solvents be allowed to contaminate the slip clutch. Do not use grease on the transaxle input shaft. Should the damper become contaminated, it must be replaced. NOTE: Due to packaging requirements the correct bolt must be used at the damper locations.
  2. Using the special tools, position the engine and transaxle together. Install the 6 transaxle-to-engine bolts. Tighten to 48 N.m {4.8 kgf.m, 35 ft.lbf}. NOTE: When positioning the engine to the transaxle, care must be taken to maintain alignment of the damper spline with the transaxle input shaft. NOTE: Transaxle removed from view for clarity. NOTE: If installing a new transaxle, install the lower insulator bracket and bolts. Tighten to 90 N.m {9.2 kgf.m, 66 ft.lbf}.
  3. Connect the high voltage wiring harness electrical connector.
  4. Using the special tools, position the engine and transaxle onto the lift table.
  5. Using the special tools, secure the engine to the lift. NOTE: Due to the weight of the transaxle, special care should be taken to mount the powertrain securely to the lift.
  6. Raise the engine and transaxle into the vehicle.
  7. Install the upper insulator. Tighten to 90 N.m {9.0 kgf.m, 66 ft.lbf}. Tighten to 103 N.m {10.3 kgf.m, 76 ft.lbf}.
  8. Install the upper insulator bracket. Tighten to 25 N.m {2.5 kgf.m, 18 ft.lbf}.
  9. Install the 3 engine mount bracket nuts. Tighten to 115 N.m {11.5 kgf.m, 85 ft.lbf}.
  10. Install the engine mount bracket bolt. Tighten to 115 N.m {11.5 kgf.m, 85 ft.lbf}.
  11. Using the lift, raise the subframe into position.
  12. Install the 2 subframe nuts. Tighten to 150 N.m {15.0 kgf.m, 111 ft.lbf}. NOTE: RH shown in illustration, LH similar.
  13. Tighten the 2 subframe bolts. Tighten to 175 N.m {17.8 kgf.m, 129 ft.lbf}. NOTE: When installing the subframe bolts, make sure both of the subframe bolts are fully engaged in their cage nuts before tightening to specification. NOTE: RH shown in illustration, LH similar.
  14. Install the roll restrictor bracket and bolts. Tighten to 55 N.m {5.6 kgf.m, 41 ft.lbf}.
  15. Connect the steering column coupling to the steering gear and install the new steering column coupling pinch bolt. Tighten to 40 N.m {4.0 kgf.m, 30 ft.lbf}.
  16. Install the rear insulator.
  17. Install the 2 support insulator studs. Tighten to 12 N.m {1.2 kgf.m, 106 in.lbf}.
  18. Install the 2 rear insulator nuts and the rear insulator bolt. Tighten to 80 N.m {8.2 kgf.m, 59 ft.lbf}.
  19. Install the rear insulator through bolt. Tighten to 115 N.m {11.5 kgf.m, 85 ft.lbf}.
  20. Install the 2 transaxle-to-engine bolts. Tighten to 48 N.m {4.8 kgf.m, 35 ft.lbf}.
  21. Install the 2 transaxle-to-engine bolts. Tighten to 48 N.m {4.8 kgf.m, 35 ft.lbf}.
  22. Install the engine support crossmember. Tighten the bolts to 90 N.m {9.0 kgf.m, 66 ft.lbf}. Tighten the new nut to 175 N.m {17.5 kgf.m, 129 ft.lbf}.
  23. Install the rear roll restrictor-to-crossmember through bolt. Tighten to 90 N.m {9.0 kgf.m, 66 ft.lbf}.
  24. Install the lower insulator through bolt. Tighten to 115 N.m {11.5 kgf.m, 85 ft.lbf}.
  25. Connect the lower radiator hose to the radiator.
  26. Install the A/C compressor and connect the A/C compressor electrical connector. Tighten to 25 N.m {2.5 kgf.m, 18 ft.lbf}.
  27. Install the auxiliary coolant pump and connect the electrical connector. Tighten to 10 N.m {1.0 kgf.m, 89 in.lbf}.
  28. Position the MECS pump and the ground strap. Install the 2 bolts. Tighten to 20 N.m {2.0 kgf.m, 177 in.lbf}.
  29. Connect the MECS pump electrical connector and attach the harness retainer.
  30. Install the wiring harness fasteners, the transaxle ground cable and nut. Tighten to 20 N.m {2.0 kgf.m, 177 in.lbf}.
  31. Connect the selector lever cable. Install the selector lever cable bracket and the 2 nuts finger tight. Attach the selector lever cable to the manual control lever.
  32. Position the control lever between the 2 casting ribs on the transaxle case.
  33. Place the gear selector lever in the D position.
  34. Tighten the selector lever cable bracket nuts to 22 N.m {2.2 kgf.m, 16 ft.lbf}.
  35. To verify the correct selector lever cable adjustment, observe the selector lever on the transaxle while an assistant moves the selector lever into each range position ending in the D position.
  36. Install the transaxle control snow shield. Tighten to 22 N.m {2.2 kgf.m, 16 ft.lbf}.
  37. Connect the transaxle coolant hoses. NOTE: If installing a new transaxle, tighten transaxle coolant tube fittings to 50 N.m {5.0 kgf.m, 37 ft.lbf}.
  38. Connect the transaxle coolant temperature sensor electrical connector and pin-type retainer.
  39. Position the DC-to-DC converter in place and install the 3 nuts. Tighten to 12 N.m {1.2 kgf.m, 106 in.lbf}.
  40. Connect the DC-to-DC converter electrical connector and 2 wire harness retainers (1 shown in illustration).
  41. Connect the coolant vent hose.
  42. Connect the 2 low voltage electrical connectors and the engine harness-to-body harness retainer.
  43. Connect the transaxle harness electrical connector and install the stud bolt. Tighten to 10 N.m {1.0 kgf.m, 89 in.lbf}.
  44. Connect the selector lever cable fastener to the intake manifold.
  45. Install the selector lever cable fasteners on the transaxle stud bolts.
  46. Connect the upper evaporative emissions (EVAP) tube quick connect coupling to the purge valve. See «EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS CANISTER PURGE VALVE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION - HYBRID»(ref-373104-S20373044292010100600000) .
  47. Connect the engine control harness electrical connector.
  48. If equipped, connect the block heater electrical connector. Attach the harness retainer clips.
  49. Connect the PCM electrical connector. Position the harness and install the nut. Tighten to 6 N.m {0.6 kgf.m, 53 in.lbf}.
  50. Connect the brake booster vacuum hose to the brake booster.
  51. Connect the upper radiator coolant hose.
  52. Connect the heater hoses to the heater core.

All wheel drive (AWD) vehicles

  1. Position the power transfer unit (PTU) in place and install the 4 bolts. Tighten to 45 N.m {4.5 kgf.m, 33 ft.lbf}.
  2. Connect the PTU vent hose.
  3. Position the PTU-to-engine support bracket and install the bolts. Tighten to 40 N.m {4.0 kgf.m, 30 ft.lbf}.
  4. Install the PTU heat shield and the bolts. Tighten to 14 N.m {1.4 kgf.m, 124 in.lbf}.
  5. Position the PTU-to-engine support bracket and install the bolts. Tighten to 40 N.m {4.0 kgf.m, 30 ft.lbf}.
  6. Install the exhaust bracket bolts. Tighten to 25 N.m {2.5 kgf.m, 18 ft.lbf}.
  7. Install the driveshaft. See «DRIVESHAFT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-373099-S12257131422010100600000) .

  1. Install the intermediate shaft.
  2. Install the intermediate shaft retaining nuts. Tighten to 27 N.m {2.7 kgf.m, 20 ft.lbf}.
  3. Install the LH halfshafts in the transaxle and the RH halfshaft in the intermediate shaft and install the ball joints in the knuckles. See «WHEEL KNUCKLE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-373111-S01187926462010100600000) and «FRONT DRIVE HALFSHAFTS REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-373098-S05291000092010100600000) .
  4. Connect the RH suspension. Install the lower ball joint-to-knuckle bolt. Tighten to 63 N.m {6.3 kgf.m, 46 ft.lbf}. Position the tie-rod end and install the new retaining nut. Tighten to 55 N.m {5.5 kgf.m, 41 ft.lbf}. Connect the stabilizer bar link and install the nut. Tighten to 63 N.m {6.3 kgf.m, 46 ft.lbf}.
  5. Install the RH brake hose retainer and the ABS sensor bolt. Tighten to 15 N.m {1.5 kgf.m, 133 in.lbf}.
  6. Connect the LH suspension. Install the lower ball joint-to-knuckle bolt. Tighten to 63 N.m {6.3 kgf.m, 46 ft.lbf}. Position the tie-rod end and install the new retaining nut. Tighten to 55 N.m {5.5 kgf.m, 41 ft.lbf}. Connect the stabilizer bar link and install the nut. Tighten to 63 N.m {6.3 kgf.m, 46 ft.lbf}.
  7. Install the LH brake hose retainer and the ABS sensor bolt. Tighten to 15 N.m {1.5 kgf.m, 133 in.lbf}.
  8. Connect the exhaust hanger insulator to the subframe.
  9. Install the catalytic converter inlet pipe and install the nuts.
  10. Install the catalytic converter inlet pipe-to-converter nuts.
  11. Install the lateral support crossmember and the bolts. Tighten to 115 N.m {11.5 kgf.m, 85 ft.lbf}.
  12. Install the front wheels and tires. See «WHEEL AND TIRE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-373095-S28507114572010100600000) .
  13. Connect the fuel supply tube. See «FUEL CHARGING AND CONTROLS - HYBRID»(ref-373103-S14438613762010100600000) .
