Belt Tensioner - Mechanical
The only mechanical check that needs to be made is a check for tensioner stick, grab or bind.
- With the engine not running, check routing of the belt.
- Detach the belt in the area of the tensioner.
- Using the correct tool, move the tensioner from its relaxed position, through its full stroke and back to the relaxed position to make sure there is no stick, grab or bind, and to make sure that there is tension on the tensioner spring.
- Rotate the tensioner pulley and check for a binding, contaminated or seized condition. Install a new tensioner if necessary. See «ACCESSORY DRIVE BELT TENSIONER -- 2.3L»(ref-221816-S11035451662006022600000) or «ACCESSORY DRIVE BELT TENSIONER -- 3.0L (4V)»(ref-221817-S11352490302006022600000) .
- Inspect the area surrounding the tensioner for oil leaks or contamination. Repair any leaks before installing a new tensioner. If the tensioner is contaminated, do not attempt to clean it as the damping mechanism inside may be damaged. Install a new tensioner if necessary. See «ACCESSORY DRIVE BELT TENSIONER -- 2.3L»(ref-221816-S11035451662006022600000) or «ACCESSORY DRIVE BELT TENSIONER -- 3.0L (4V)»(ref-221817-S11352490302006022600000) .
- If the tensioner meets the above criteria, proceed to test the tensioner dynamically. If the tensioner does not meet the above criteria, install a new tensioner. See «ACCESSORY DRIVE BELT TENSIONER -- 2.3L»(ref-221816-S11035451662006022600000) or «ACCESSORY DRIVE BELT TENSIONER -- 3.0L (4V)»(ref-221817-S11352490302006022600000) ..
Belt Tensioner - Dynamic
The automatic belt tensioner can be checked dynamically as follows
- With the engine running, observe the belt tensioner movement. The tensioner should move (respond) when the air conditioning clutch cycles (if equipped), or when the engine is accelerated rapidly. If the tensioner movement is excessive without air conditioning clutch cycling or engine acceleration, a pulley or shaft is possibly bent, or out of round or the damper mechanism inside the tensioner may be damaged. Excessive belt rideout (uneven depth of grooves in the belt) can cause excessive tensioner movement. Check condition by installing a new belt. See «ACCESSORY DRIVE BELT -- 2.3L»(ref-221816-S41124517472006022600000) or «ACCESSORY DRIVE BELT -- 3.0L (4V)»(ref-221817-S07836805682006022600000) .

Scheme 147
- Remove the valve cover. See «VALVE COVER»(ref-221816-S30441511922006022600000) for the 2.3L engine, or «VALVE COVER -- RH»(ref-221817-S20945219832006022600000) for the 3.0L (4V) engine. CAUTION: Turn the engine clockwise only, and only use the crankshaft bolt. NOTE: Before removing the camshafts, measure the clearance of each valve at base circle, with the lobe pointed away from the tappet. Failure to measure all clearances prior to removing the camshafts will necessitate repeated removal and installation and wasted labor time.
- Use a feeler gauge to measure the clearance of each valve and record its location. NOTE: The number on the valve tappet only reflects the digits that follow the decimal. For example, a tappet with the number 0.650 has the thickness of 3.650 mm. NOTE: A midrange clearance is the most desirable: Intake: 0.22-0.28 mm (0.008-0.011 inch) Exhaust: 0.27-0.33 mm (0.010-0.013 inch)
- Select tappets using this formula: tappet thickness = measured clearance + the base tappet thickness - most desirable thickness. Select the tappets and mark the installation location.
- If any tappets do not measure within specifications, install new tappets in these locations. See «VALVE SEALS AND VALVE TAPPETS»(ref-221816-S05684361632006022600000) for the 2.3L engine.
Scheme 148
- Inspect camshaft lobes for pitting or damage in the contact area. Minor pitting is acceptable outside the contact area. If excessive pitting or damage is present, install new components as necessary.
