INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION AND FILTERING

The air intake system consists of the following

  1. air cleaner
  2. air cleaner element
  3. air cleaner outlet tube
  4. inlet tube
  5. resonator
  6. mass air flow (MAF) sensor
  7. throttle body
  8. intake manifolds

The intake air system

  1. cleans intake air with a replaceable, dry type air cleaner element.
  2. measures airflow and air temperature with the MAF sensor.

The throttle body

  1. controls air supply to the upper intake manifold by positioning the throttle plate.
  2. connects the accelerator cable and, if equipped, cruise control actuator cable to the throttle plate.
  3. is not adjustable.
  4. cannot be cleaned.

  5. Disconnect the vacuum tube and position it aside.
  6. Disconnect and remove the vacuum hose.
  7. Disconnect the fuel vapor return hose.
  8. Disconnect the idle air control (IAC) motor electrical connector.
  9. Disconnect the swirl control valve electrical connector.
  10. Disconnect the knock sensor (KS) electrical connector.
  11. Separate the KS wire harness from the intake manifold.
  12. Disconnect the temperature manifold absolute pressure (TMAP) sensor electrical connector.
  13. Disconnect the oil pressure sender electrical connector.
  14. Detach the pin-type wire harness retainers and position the harness aside.
  15. Remove the intake manifold bolts.
  16. Reposition the intake manifold, loosen the lower crankcase ventilation hose clamp and disconnect the crankcase ventilation hose.
  17. Remove the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) tube.
  18. Remove the intake manifold and the intake manifold gaskets.
  19. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
