INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION AND FILTERING

The air intake system consists of the following

  1. air cleaner
  2. air cleaner element
  3. air cleaner outlet tube
  4. inlet tube
  5. resonator
  6. mass air flow (MAF) sensor
  7. throttle body
  8. intake manifolds

The intake air system

  1. cleans intake air with a replaceable, dry type air cleaner element.
  2. measures airflow and air temperature with the MAF sensor.

The throttle body

  1. controls air supply to the upper intake manifold by positioning the throttle plate.
  2. connects the accelerator cable and, if equipped, cruise control actuator cable to the throttle plate.
  3. is not adjustable.
  4. cannot be cleaned.

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. See «BATTERY DISCONNECT»(ref-221834-S42533501902006022600000) .
  3. Remove the air cleaner outlet pipe. See «AIR CLEANER OUTLET PIPE - 3.0L (4V)»(ref-221824-S25313461482006022600000) .
  4. Drain the cooling system. See «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING»(ref-221821-S22848327452006022600000) .
  5. Disconnect the cables. Disconnect the throttle cable. If equipped, disconnect the cruise control cable. Remove the throttle cable bracket bolts.
  6. Disconnect the throttle position (TP) sensor and idle air control (IAC) electrical connectors.
  7. Disconnect the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve vacuum hose and EGR tube nut.
  8. Disconnect the EGR vacuum regulator valve electrical connector and vacuum hose.
  9. Disconnect the three vacuum hoses on the back of the intake manifold. Disconnect the chassis vacuum hose. Disconnect the engine vacuum hose. Disconnect the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) hose.
  10. Disconnect the vapor management valve (VMV) vacuum hose.
  11. Disconnect the two electrical connectors attached to the left side of the upper intake manifold.
  12. Position the transaxle vent hose aside.
  13. Remove the nut from the wire harness.
  14. Remove the eight bolts and the upper intake manifold. Remove and inspect the gaskets. Discard if damaged. Clean all sealing surfaces.
  15. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Tighten the upper intake manifold in the sequence shown.
