INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION AND FILTERING
The air intake system consists of the following
- air cleaner
- air cleaner element
- air cleaner outlet tube
- inlet tube
- resonator
- mass air flow (MAF) sensor
- throttle body
- intake manifolds
The intake air system
- cleans intake air with a replaceable, dry type air cleaner element.
- measures airflow and air temperature with the MAF sensor.
The throttle body
- controls air supply to the upper intake manifold by positioning the throttle plate.
- connects the accelerator cable and, if equipped, cruise control actuator cable to the throttle plate.
- is not adjustable.
- cannot be cleaned.

- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
- Disconnect the battery ground cable. See «BATTERY DISCONNECT»(ref-221834-S42533501902006022600000) .
- Remove the air cleaner outlet pipe. See «AIR CLEANER OUTLET PIPE - 3.0L (4V)»(ref-221824-S25313461482006022600000) .
- Drain the cooling system. See «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING»(ref-221821-S22848327452006022600000) .
- Disconnect the cables. Disconnect the throttle cable. If equipped, disconnect the cruise control cable. Remove the throttle cable bracket bolts.
- Disconnect the throttle position (TP) sensor and idle air control (IAC) electrical connectors.
- Disconnect the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve vacuum hose and EGR tube nut.
- Disconnect the EGR vacuum regulator valve electrical connector and vacuum hose.
- Disconnect the three vacuum hoses on the back of the intake manifold. Disconnect the chassis vacuum hose. Disconnect the engine vacuum hose. Disconnect the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) hose.
- Disconnect the vapor management valve (VMV) vacuum hose.
- Disconnect the two electrical connectors attached to the left side of the upper intake manifold.
- Position the transaxle vent hose aside.
- Remove the nut from the wire harness.
- Remove the eight bolts and the upper intake manifold. Remove and inspect the gaskets. Discard if damaged. Clean all sealing surfaces.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure. Tighten the upper intake manifold in the sequence shown.
