SHIFT-LOCK INSPECTION

  1. Turn the ignition switch to ON position.
  2. Verify that the selector lever is in P position.
  3. Without the brake pedal depressed, verify that the selector lever cannot be shifted from P position.
  4. Depress the brake pedal and verify that the selector lever can be shifted from P position. If not as specified, inspect the P position switch continuity and/or shift-lock relay, shift-lock solenoid continuity.

Scheme 259: SHIFT-LOCK RELEASE LEVER INSPECTION
  1. Turn the ignition switch to OFF position.
  2. Verify that the selector lever is in P position.
  3. Without the brake pedal depressed, verify that the selector lever cannot be shifted from P position.
  4. Remove the cover.
  5. Push down the shift-lock release lever using fingers.
  6. Verify that the selector lever can be shifted from P position. If not as specified, inspect and repair as necessary.

KEY INTERLOCK INSPECTION

  1. Turn the ignition switch to ON position.
  2. Shift the selector lever to R position.
  3. Verify that the key cannot be turned to LOCK position.
  4. Shift the selector lever to P position.
  5. Verify that the key can be turned to LOCK position. If a malfunction is found, perform the instrument cluster input/output check mode. (See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER INPUT/OUTPUT CHECK MODE .)

Scheme 260: CONTINUITY INSPECTION
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the column cover.
  3. Disconnect the key interlock solenoid connector.
  4. Inspect for continuity between terminals A and B. If there is no continuity, replace the key cylinder.
  5. Connect the key interlock solenoid connector.
  6. Install the column cover.
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.

Scheme 261: RESISTANCE INSPECTION
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Disconnect the key interlock resistor connector.
  3. Inspect for resistance between terminals A and B. If not correct, replace the key interlock resistor. (See «KEY INTERLOCK RESISTOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-178053-S38319651232005061000000) .) Resistance 6.65-7.35 ohms
  4. Connect the key interlock resistor connector.
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Disconnect the key interlock resistor connector.
  3. Remove the key interlock resistor.
  4. Install the key interlock resistor.
  5. Connect the key interlock resistor connector.
  6. Connect the negative battery cable.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the column cover.
  3. Disconnect the connector.
  4. Inspect the continuity. If not as specified, replace selector lever. (See «SELECTOR LEVER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-178053-S41924315632005061000000) .)
  5. Connect the connector.
  6. Install the column cover.
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the column cover.
  3. Disconnect the connector.
  4. Inspect the continuity. If there is no continuity, replace selector lever. (See «SELECTOR LEVER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-178053-S41924315632005061000000) .)
  5. Connect the connector.
  6. Install the column cover.
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Disconnect the shift-lock relay connector.
  3. Inspect the voltage and continuity between the shift-lock relay terminals. If not as specified, replace the shift-lock relay. (See «SHIFT-LOCK RELAY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-178053-S37068110012005061000000) .)
  4. Connect the shift-lock relay connector.
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Disconnect the shift-lock relay connector.
  3. Remove the shift-lock relay.
  4. Install the shift-lock relay.
  5. Connect the shift-lock relay connector.
  6. Connect the negative battery cable.

Scheme 269: SELECTOR LEVER INSPECTION
  1. Turn the ignition switch to ON position.
  2. With the brake pedal depressed, verify that there is a "click" at each range when shifted in the pattern shown.
  3. Verify that the selector lever can only be shifted as shown.
  4. Verify that the positions of the selector lever and the selector indicator light are aligned. If not as specified, adjust the TR switch and/or selector cable. (See TRANSAXLE RANGE (TR) SWITCH ADJUSTMENT .) (See «SELECTOR CABLE ADJUSTMENT»(ref-178053-S08803865542005061000000) .)
  5. Verify that the vehicle operates in each selected range.

  1. Remove the column cover.
  2. Shift the selector lever to P position.
  3. Loosen nut A shown in the figure.
  4. Pull the selector lever to the R position side gate of P position, and tighten nut A. Tightening Torque 16-22 N.m {1.6-2.3 kgf.m, 12-16 ft.lbf}
  5. Verify that the selector lever bolt end is exposed from the nut.
  6. Install the column cover.
