If the battery is disconnected, the power source mode that was present before disconnection will be restored after the battery is reconnected. Be sure to turn the engine switch off (change the power source mode to off) before disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal. Be careful if the power source mode of a vehicle with a discharged battery is not known. After the cable is reconnected to the negative (-) battery terminal, the engine may not start on the first attempt. This is not a malfunction. The engine will start normally for subsequent attempts. HINT: In this chapter, the expression "power source" has been used in some locations to allow precise explanations. The power source mode is also expressed using conventional expressions such as "engine switch off", "engine switch on (ACC)" and "engine switch on (IG)".
- PRECAUTIONS FOR PUSH-BUTTON START FUNCTION Before starting the engine, firmly depress the brake pedal until the indicator in the engine switch turns green. When a door is opened or closed after the engine switch is turned off, the steering wheel is locked by the steering lock function. NOTE: Do not turn off the engine switch during towing. Doing so will cause the steering wheel to be locked. If the engine is started and stopped repeatedly in a short amount of time, the steering lock motor operation may be limited to prevent overheating. In this case, do not start or stop the engine. HINT: Operation will be re-enabled after approximately 10 seconds. When the steering lock has not released, the engine switch indicator light flashes green. HINT: Operate the engine switch while turning the steering wheel to the left and right. The smart access system with push-button start, wireless door lock control system and engine immobiliser system may not operate normally, or the size of the operation area may decrease in the following situations: When the smart key battery is depleted. When any facility that generates strong radio waves or electrical noise such as a TV tower, power plant, gas station, broadcast station, large video-billboard or airport are located near the inspection site. When the key is located near a wireless device such as a radio, cellular phone or cordless telephone. When the smart key is in contact with or covered with a metal object similar to the following: Metal or aluminum plated card Aluminum film from a cigarette box Metallic wallet or bag Coins Heating pad Media such as CDs or DVDs When a wireless remote is operated near the vehicle. When the key is carried with following items: Electronic key or wireless remote from another vehicle PC or similar handheld device Digital audio player Portable game device When a metallic film is applied to the rear glass.
- WHEN KEY BATTERY IS LOW When the key battery is depleted, the engine cannot be started using the smart function. For how to start the engine when the key battery is depleted, see Description. Refer to «SYSTEM DESCRIPTION [03/2012 - ]»(ref-602704-S30593050402014030500000) . If the electrical key is held near the engine switch to start the engine when the electrical key battery is depleted, the following warnings will sound: Driver door open --> closed An exit warning will sound if the shift lever is in a position other than P and the power source (engine switch) is in a mode other than off. An exit warning will sound if the shift lever is in P and the power source is in a mode other than off. Doors other than the driver door open --> closed A warning will sound to indicate that the electrical key has been taken out of the vehicle. These warnings will sound because it is not possible for the vehicle to determine if the key is present in the vehicle (due to the depleted key battery). These warnings do not indicate system malfunctions.
- EMERGENCY ENGINE STOP CONTROL If it is necessary to stop the engine in an emergency while driving the vehicle, push and hold the engine switch for more than 3 seconds or more or pushing engine switch 3 times or more in a row. While driving, the engine switch should only be operated in the event of on emergency. NOTE: If the engine stops while the vehicle is being driven, this could lead to an accident.
- EMERGENCY ENGINE START CONTROL If there is a malfunction in the stop light switch or STOP fuse, their signals may not be correctly transmitted to the power management control ECU. This may result in the engine not starting even if the engine switch is pressed while the brake pedal is depressed and the shift lever is in P or N. To activate the starter: Turn the engine switch from off to on (ACC). Press and hold the engine switch for 15 seconds.

- PUSH-BUTTON START DESCRIPTION The push-button start uses a push-type engine switch, which the driver can operate by merely carrying the electrical key. This system consists primarily of the power management control ECU, engine switch, steering lock actuator assembly (steering lock ECU), electrical key, ACC1 relay, ACC2 relay, IG1 relay, IG1 NO. 1 relay, IG1 NO. 2 relay, IG1 NO. 3 relay, IG2 relay, ID code box (immobiliser code ECU) and certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly). The power management control ECU controls the system. This function operates in cooperation with the smart access system with push-button start. HINT: In this chapter, the expression "power source" has been used in some locations to allow precise explanations. The power source mode is also expressed using conventional expressions such as "engine switch off", "engine switch on (ACC)" and "engine switch on (IG)".
- FUNCTION OF MAIN COMPONENTS Component Function Engine Switch Transponder Key Amplifier Transmits engine switch signal to power management control ECU. Informs driver of power source mode or system abnormality with illumination stage of indicator light. Receives ID code and transmits it to certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) when key battery is low. Electrical Key Receives signals from oscillators and returns ID code to entry door control receiver. Electrical Key Oscillator Console and Rear Seat Receives request signals from certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) and forms detection area in vehicle. Power Management Control ECU Changes power source mode in 4 stages (off, on (ACC), on (IG), start) in accordance with shift position and state of stop light switch. Controls push-button start function in accordance with signals received from switches and each ECU. Permits steering lock actuator assembly (steering lock ECU) to supply power to activate the motor. Power management control ECU and certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) permit starting of engine after receiving unlock signal from steering lock actuator assembly (steering lock ECU). Certification ECU (Smart Key ECU Assembly) Certifies ID code received from entry door control receiver and transmits certification results to the ID code box (immobiliser code ECU) and steering lock actuator assembly (steering lock ECU). Stop Light Switch Outputs state of brake pedal to power management control ECU. ID Code Box (Immobiliser Code ECU) Receives steering unlock or engine immobiliser unset signals from certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly), certifies them, and transmits each unset signal to steering lock actuator assembly (steering lock ECU) or ECM Steering Lock ECU Included in steering lock actuator assembly activates steering lock motor based on permission signals from power management control ECU and ID code box (immobiliser code ECU). Receives lock/unlock request signals from certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) and power management control ECU. Detects steering lock/unlock positions and transmits status to other ECUs.
- SYSTEM FUNCTION The electric controls of the push-button start function are described below: Control Outline Engine switch control When the person carrying the key enters the vehicle and the brake pedal is depressed, the power management control ECU sends the key certification request signal to the certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly). On receiving the key certification request signal, the certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) generates a request signal and sends it to the indoor electrical key oscillator. The indoor electrical key oscillator transmits the request signal in order to detect that the key is in the cabin. When the key receives the request signal, it sends back the response code and ID code. When the door control receiver assembly receives the signal from the key, it sends the ID code to the certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly). The ID code box verifies check results received from the certification ECU via LIN and sends them to the power management control ECU. Based on these results, the power management control ECU authorizes the operation of the engine switch. If the ID codes match, the certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) sends the certification OK signal to the power management control ECU. Upon receiving the certification OK signal, the power management control ECU illuminates the engine switch indicator light, changes the power source mode and starts the engine depending on how the engine switch is operated. Diagnosis When the power management control ECU detects a malfunction, the power management control ECU diagnoses and memorizes information related to the fault.
- CONSTRUCTION AND OPERATION Engine Switch The engine switch consists of a momentary type switch, 3 color (amber, green, greenish white) LEDs, and a transponder key amplifier. The greenish white LED is for illumination. The amber and green LEDs are for the indicator lights. The driver can check the present power source mode and whether the engine can start in accordance with the illumination state of the indicator light. When the power management control ECU detects an abnormality in the push-button start system, it makes the amber indicator light flash. If the engine stopped in this state, it may not be possible to restart it. Power Management Control ECU The power management control ECU consists of the IG, IG1 NO. 1, IG1 NO. 2, IG1 NO. 3, IG2, ACC relay actuation circuits and CPU. HINT: Before removing the battery, make sure to turn the engine switch off. The power management control ECU constantly stores the present power source mode in its memory. Therefore, if the power supply for the power management control ECU is interrupted by disconnecting the battery, the power management control ECU restores the power source mode after the battery is reconnected. For this reason, if the battery is disconnected when the engine switch is other than off, the power will be restored to the vehicle at the same time the power is restored to the power management control ECU (by reconnecting the battery).
- PUSH-BUTTON START FUNCTION OPERATION This system has different power source mode patterns depending on the brake pedal condition and shift lever position. After either 20 minutes or 60 minutes has passed with the engine switch on (ACC) and the shift position in P, the power management control ECU will automatically cut the power supply (the power source mode changes to off). The illustration below shows the transition of power source modes. Transition of power source modes: HINT: While the vehicle is being driven normally, operation of the engine switch is disabled. However, if the engine must be stopped in an emergency while the vehicle is being driven, pressing the engine switch for 3 seconds or more or pushing engine switch 3 times or more in a row stops the engine. The power source mode will change from start to on (ACC).
- WHEN KEY BATTERY IS LOW To operate the push-button start function when the key battery is low, hold the key close to the engine switch with the brake pedal depressed. The power management control ECU transmits a key verification request signal to the certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) when it receives the stop light switch signal. The certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) does not receive an ID code response from the entry door control receiver, so it actuates the transponder key amplifier built into the engine switch. The transponder key amplifier outputs an engine immobiliser radio wave to the key. The key receives the radio wave, and returns a radio wave response to the transponder key amplifier. The transponder key amplifier combines the key ID codes with the radio wave response, and transmits it to the certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly). The certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) judges and verifies the ID code, and transmits a key verification OK signal to the power management control ECU. The buzzer in the combination meter sounds at the same time. After the buzzer sounds, if the engine switch is pressed within 5 seconds with the brake pedal not depressed, the power source mode changes to on (ACC) or on (IG), the same as in the normal condition. HINT: The key (for card type) operation inspection can performed using the same procedure as for the key (for standard type).
- DIAGNOSIS The power management control ECU can detect malfunctions in the push-button start function when the power source mode is on (IG). When the ECU detects a malfunction, the amber indicator light of the engine switch flashes to warn the driver. At the same time, the ECU stores a 5-digit Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) in its memory. The indicator light warning continues for 15 seconds even after the power source mode is changed to off. The DTC can be read by connecting the Techstream to the DLC3. The push-button start function cannot be operated if a malfunction occurs.

NOTE: When the customer requests a change in a function, first make sure that the function can be customized. Be sure to make a note of the current setting before customizing. When troubleshooting a function, first make sure that the function is set to the default setting. Customizing with the Techstream. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the engine switch on (IG). Turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Customize Setting / Smart key/Access or Warning. Select the setting by referring to the table below. - CUSTOMIZING FUNCTION WITH COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY HINT: Press the UP/DOWN switch on the steering pad switch assembly when changing an item selection. Press the ENTER switch on the steering pad switch assembly when selecting an item. Turn the engine switch on (IG). Press and hold the MENU switch on the steering pad switch assembly. Select the setting by referring to the table below Display Default Content Setting Relevant ECU ACCESS SYSTEM WITH ELEC. KEY ON Function that enables or disables the smart access system with push-button start. ON or OFF Certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) Press the ENTER switch on the steering pad switch assembly. The setting completion screen will be displayed. Return to the item selection screen.
- ELECTRICAL KEY CANCEL NOTE: Because the key (for card type) does not have a wireless transmitter function, it cannot be used to perform the key cancel operation. The electrical key cancel operation disables the following functions: Entry Unlock/Lock Entry Ignition Entry Back Door Open Electrical Key Lock-in Prevention Warning Memory Call The operation procedures are as follows: Precondition: Engine switch off, driver side door closed and unlocked. Push the unlock switch of the key once. Open the driver door within 5 seconds. Push the unlock switch of the key twice within 5 seconds. Close and open the driver door twice within 30 seconds. (Driver door: Close --> Open --> Close --> Open) Push the unlock switch of the key twice within 5 seconds. Close and open the driver door within 30 seconds. (Driver door: Close --> Open) Close the driver door within 5 seconds. When electrical key cancel is activated, the wireless door lock buzzer sounds twice. To return to the original condition, perform the procedures again. When the original condition is returned, the wireless door lock buzzer sounds once.
