ON-VEHICLE REPAIRS

Note. Various components may be serviced without transaxle removal. For servicing of these components, see appropriate component under ADJUSTMENTS and/or REMOVAL & INSTALLATION . For additional information on testing electrical components, see appropriate DIAGNOSIS article.

PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH

Note. For park/neutral position switch continuity test, see appropriate DIAGNOSIS article.

  1. Inspect park/neutral position switch assembly: Apply parking brake and turn ignition switch to "ON". Depress brake pedal and check that engine starts only when shift lever is set in "N" or "P" position. Check that back-up light is lit and reverse warning buzzer sounds only when shift lever is set in "R" position. If operation is not as specified, check continuity of park/neutral position switch.
  2. Adjust park/neutral position switch: Loosen park/neutral position switch retaining bolts. (Scheme 20) Set transaxle control shift lever to "N" position. Align groove and neutral line. (Scheme 21) Hold park/neutral position switch in position and tighten retaining bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-168021-S37518742892004102800000). Inspect park/neutral position switch operation.

SHIFT LEVER POSITION

Note. Inspect and adjust shift lever position. When shifting shift lever from "N" position to other positions, check that lever can be shifted smoothly and accurately to each position and that position indicator is aligned with correct position. If indicator is not aligned with correct position, carry out following procedures.

  1. Inspect shift lever position: Ensure shifting lever moves smoothly and can be operated moderately from "P" to "R" with ignition switch ON and brake pedal depressed. (Scheme 22) Start engine and ensure that vehicle moves forward when shifting lever from "N" to "D" position and reverses when shifting it to "R" position.
  2. Adjusting shift lever position: Loosen nut on shaft lever. (Scheme 23) Push control shaft fully rearward. (Scheme 24) Return control shaft lever 2 notches to "N" position. Set shift lever to "N" position. NOTE: When tightening the nut, confirm that the control cable is properly stretched. If the control cable end is pushed up excessively, shift lever can not be properly adjusted. While pushing control cable end up with shift lever in "N" position, install it to the control shaft lever with nut. (Scheme 25) Tighten shaft lever nut to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-168021-S37518742892004102800000). Start engine and ensure that vehicle moves forward when shifting lever from "N" to "D" position and reverses when shifting it to "R" position.

AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE PARK MECHANISM

Check lock release button of shift lever for proper and smooth operation. On a safe incline, check that vehicle is held securely with shift lever in "P" position with all brakes released.

Install

  1. Install oil cooler: Install the oil cooler, bolt "A" and nut "B". Hand tighten at first and then tighten nut and bolt to specificaiton. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-168021-S02799003042004102800000). Connect oil cooler hoses.
  2. Install front bumper cover. (Scheme 27)
  3. Fill ATF. See «DRAINING & REFILLING»(ref-168021-S40944435512004102800000) in LUBRICATION.
