  1. CHECK SHIFT LOCK OPERATION Adjust the shift lever to the P position. Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position. Check that the shift lever cannot be adjusted to any other position other than P. Turn the ignition switch to the on position, depress the brake pedal and check that the shift lever can be adjusted to other position.
  2. CHECK SHIFT LOCK RELEASE BUTTON OPERATION Using a small screwdriver, remove the shift lock release cover. When operating the shift lever with the shift lock release button pressed, check that the lever can be adjusted to any position other than P.
  3. CHECK KEY INTERLOCK OPERATION Turn the ignition switch to the on position. Depress the brake pedal and adjust the shift lever to any position other than P. Check that the ignition key cannot be turned to the LOCK position. Adjust the shift lever to the P position, turn the ignition key to the LOCK position and check that the ignition key can be removed.
  4. INSPECT SHIFT LOCK CONTROL UNIT ASSEMBLY Measure the voltage according to the values in the table below. HINT: Do not disconnect the shift lock control unit assembly connector. 1. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER ASSY
  2. REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL SAFETY PAD SUB-ASSY W/PASSENGER AIR BAG ASSY (See «REPLACEMENT» )
  3. REMOVE AIR CONDITIONER UNIT ASSY (See step 30 under «OVERHAUL» ).
  4. REMOVE AIR BAG SENSOR ASSY CENTER (See «AIR BAG CENTER SENSOR» )
  5. REMOVE TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE ASSY Remove the nut from the control shaft lever. Disconnect the transmission control cable assy from the control shaft lever. Remove the clip and disconnect the transmission control cable assy from the control cable bracket. Remove the bolt and transmission control cable bracket No. 2. Remove the 3 bolts and disconnect the transmission control cable assy from the vehicle. Using a screwdriver, disconnect the cable end from the shift lever assy. Turn the socket of the transmission control cable assembly counterclockwise and remove the stopper cap. Disconnect the transmission control cable assembly from the shift lever assy.
  6. INSTALL TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE ASSY Connect the socket of the transmission control cable assembly to the shift lever assy. Connect the control cable end to the shift lever assy. Push the stopper cap to the socket as shown in the illustration. Turn the socket of the transmission control cable assy clockwise and install the stopper cap. NOTE: To prevent torsion of the inner cable, the end with the eye should face up. Push the cable end to the bottom of the pin. Confirm that the connection between the socket and the shift lock control unit is fixed. Install the transmission control cable assy with the 3 bolts. Torque: 4.9 N.m (50 kgf.cm, 43 in.lbf) Install the transmission control cable bracket No. 2 with the bolt. Torque: 12 N.m (122 kgf.cm, 9 ft.lbf) Temporarily install the transmission control cable assy to the control shaft lever with the nut. Install the transmission control cable assy and clip to the bracket.
  7. INSTALL AIR BAG SENSOR ASSY CENTER (See «AIR BAG CENTER SENSOR» )
  8. INSTALL AIR CONDITIONER UNIT ASSY (See step 30 under «OVERHAUL» ).
  9. INSTALL INSTRUMENT PANEL SAFETY PAD SUB-ASSY W/PASSENGER AIR BAG ASSY (See «REPLACEMENT» )
  10. INSPECT SHIFT LEVER POSITION (See «ADJUSTMENT» )
  11. ADJUST SHIFT LEVER POSITION Loosen the nut on the control shaft lever. Push the control shaft fully downward. Return the control shaft lever 2 notches to the N position. While pushing the control cable end up with the shift lever in the N position, install it to the control shaft lever with the nut. Torque: 15 N.m (150 kgf.cm, 10 ft.lbf) NOTE: If the control cable end is excessively pushed up, the shift lever can not be adjusted. When tightening the nut, confirm that the control cable is properly stretched. Start the engine and make sure that the vehicle moves forward when shifting the lever from the N to D position and moves rearward when shifting it to the R position.
  12. INSTALL ENGINE UNDER COVER ASSY
  13. OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION ECU INITIALIZATION (See «OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT (ECU) INITIALIZATION PROCEDURE» )
  14. INSPECT SRS WARNING LIGHT (See «AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS» )
