  1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
  2. Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream on.
  3. Clear the DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC procedure). Refer to «DTC CHECK / CLEAR»(ref-396630-S12048003312011050900000) .
  4. Turn the engine switch off and wait for 30 seconds.
  5. Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream on.
  6. Wait 5 seconds [A].
  7. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes.
  8. Read the DTC [B].
  9. If a DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning. HINT: If a DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.
  10. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Utility / All Readiness.
  11. Input the DTC: P0010 or P0020.
  12. Check the DTC judgment result.   1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
  2. Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream on.
  3. Clear the DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC procedure). Refer to «DTC CHECK / CLEAR»(ref-396630-S12048003312011050900000) .
  4. Turn the engine switch off and wait for 30 seconds.
  5. Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream on [A].
  6. Start the engine and warm it up until the engine coolant temperature reaches 75°C (167°F) or more [B].
  7. Drive the vehicle for 5 minutes or more [C].
  8. Idle the engine for 30 seconds or more [D].
  9. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes / Pending.
  10. Read the pending DTC [E].
  11. If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning. HINT: If a pending DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.
  12. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Utility / All Readiness.
  13. Input the DTC: P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022.
  14. Check the DTC judgment result.   1. If the difference between the target and actual camshaft timings is greater than the specified value, the ECM operates the VVT actuator.

PROCEDURE

  1. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (OPERATE OCV) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Start the engine and turn the Techstream on. Warm up the engine. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Active Test / Control the Exhaust Linear (Bank 1) or Control the Exhaust Linear (Bank 2). Check the engine speed while operating the Oil Control Valve (OCV) using the Techstream. OK Techstream Operation Specified Condition 0% (OFF) Normal engine speed 127% (ON) Engine idles roughly or stalls (soon after OCV switched from OFF to ON) OK --> CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS NG: Go to next step
  2. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (FOR EXHAUST CAMSHAFT) Disconnect the B7 or B5 OCV connector. Measure the resistance between the terminals of the OCV. Standard resistance Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition 1 - 2 20°C (68°F) 6.9 to 7.9 ohms Reconnect the OCV connector. OK --> See step 4 NG: Go to next step
  3. REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY. Refer to «COMPONENTS»(ref-396635-S15366317692011050900000)
  4. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (OCV - ECM) Disconnect the B7 or B5 OCV connector. Disconnect the B12 ECM connector. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.   1. CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P0014, P0015, P0024 OR P0025) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Code. Read the DTCs. Drive the vehicle in accordance with the driving pattern described in the Confirmation Driving Pattern. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes / Pending. Read the pending DTCs using the Techstream. OK No pending DTC output. NG --> See step 5 OK: CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS
  4. GO TO DTC CHART. Refer to «DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART»(ref-396630-S19862863392011050900000)
  5. CHECK VALVE TIMING (CHECK FOR LOOSE AND JUMPED TEETH ON TIMING CHAIN) Remove the cylinder head covers RH and LH. Turn the crankshaft pulley, and align its groove with the timing mark "0" of the timing chain cover. Check that the timing marks of the camshaft timing gears are aligned with the timing marks of the bearing cap as shown in the illustration. If not, turn the crankshaft 1 revolution (360°), then align the marks as above. OK The timing marks on the crankshaft timing gears are aligned as shown in the illustration. Reinstall the cylinder head covers. NG --> ADJUST VALVE TIMING OK: Go to next step
  6. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (OCV FOR EXHAUST CAMSHAFT) Remove the OCV. Measure the resistance between the terminals of the OCV. Standard resistance Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition 1 - 2 20°C (68°F) 6.9 to 7.9 ohms Connect the positive battery terminal to terminal 1 and connect the negative battery terminal to terminal 2. Check the valve operation. OK Valve moves quickly. Reinstall the OCV. NG --> See step 10 OK: Go to next step
  7. INSPECT OIL CONTROL VALVE FILTER AND PIPE Remove the oil pipe No. 1 or No. 2. Remove the oil control valve filter. Check that the filter and pipe are not clogged. OK Filter is not clogged. NG --> REPLACE OIL CONTROL VALVE FILTER OR PIPE OK: Go to next step
  8. REPLACE EXHAUST CAMSHAFT TIMING GEAR ASSEMBLY NEXT: Go to next step
  9. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream on. Clear the DTCs. Start the engine and warm up the engine. Drive the vehicle in accordance with the driving pattern described in the Confirmation Driving Pattern. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes / Pending. Read the pending DTCs using the Techstream. OK No pending DTC output. HINT: DTC P0014, P0015, P0024 or P0025 may be stored when foreign objects in the engine oil are caught in some parts of the system. The DTC will remain stored even system returns to normal after a short time. Foreign objects are filtered out by the oil filter. NG --> See step 11 OK: END
  10. REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (FOR EXHAUST CAMSHAFT). Refer to «COMPONENTS»(ref-396635-S15366317692011050900000)

FAIL-SAFE

When any of these DTCs, as well as other DTCs relating to electronic throttle control system malfunctions are set, the ECM enters fail-safe mode. During fail-safe mode, the ECM cuts the current to the throttle actuator, and the throttle valve is returned to a 6° throttle angle by the return spring. The ECM then adjusts the engine output by controlling the fuel injection (intermittent fuel-cut) and ignition timing, in accordance with the accelerator pedal opening angle, to allow the vehicle to continue at a minimal speed. If the accelerator pedal is depressed firmly and gently, the vehicle can be driven slowly.

Fail-safe mode continues until a pass condition is detected, and the engine switch is then turned off.

  6. Check if "Coolant Temp" is 56°C (133°F) or less and "Intake Air" is between 0 and 35°C (32 and 95°F).
  7. Set the heater to MAX HOT with fresh air mode selected and turn the A/C off.
  8. Start the engine and drive the vehicle at 50 mph (80 km/h) for 15 minutes [B]. HINT: Data can be captured relatively easily by using the snapshot function in the Data List. Enter the following menus: Data List / Function / Snap-shot configuration / Record time / 5 min. Data capture can be started by using the target point. HINT: In order to store misfire DTCs, it is necessary to operate the vehicle for the period of time shown in the table below, using the Misfire RPM and Misfire Load in the Data List.
