Note. For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . For circuit identification and wiring diagram, see CHEROKEE wiring diagram in WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
Note. DTC P1698: NO CCD MESSAGES FROM TCM is monitored with engine running. DTC may be stored in Powertrain Control Module (PCM) when no messages are received from Transmission Control Module (TCM) for 10 seconds. Possible causes are: defective PCM, defective TCM, defective connector or defective wiring.
Note. CCD Bus test will automatically run in this step.
- Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, select TRANSMISSION. If scan tool displays BUS OPERATIONAL, go to next step. If scan tool does not display BUS OPERATIONAL, see IDENTIFYING VEHICLE COMMUNICATION PROBLEMS in appropriate VEHICLE COMMUNICATIONS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT section.
- Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, select ENGINE MODULE. Raise and support vehicle. Start engine and allow it idle. Place gear shift lever in Drive position and allow wheels to rotate for one minute. Apply brakes and place gear shift lever in Park position. Using scan tool, read DTCs. If DTC P1698: NO CCD MESSAGE FROM TCM is present, with a START/RUN count of zero, go to next step. If scan tool does not display DTC P1698: NO CCD MESSAGE FROM TCM with a START/RUN count of zero, go to step 7).
- Turn engine off. Disconnect PCM connectors. PCM is located in engine compartment. See PCM LOCATION table under SYSTEM DIAGNOSTICS. Disconnect Transmission Control Module (TCM) connector. TCM is located above accelerator pedal. Clean and/or repair connectors as necessary. Using an ohmmeter, check resistance of CCD Bus positive circuit (Violet/Brown wire) between PCM and TCM connectors. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open CCD Bus positive circuit between PCM and TCM. Perform TEST VER-2A.
- Ensure ignition is off. Ensure PCM and TCM connectors are still disconnected. Using ohmmeter, check resistance of CCD Bus negative circuit (White/Black wire) between PCM and TCM connectors. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open CCD Bus negative circuit between PCM and TCM. Perform TEST VER-2A.
- Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, select TRANSMISSION. If scan tool displays NO RESPONSE, replace TCM. Perform TEST VER-2A. If scan tool does not display NO RESPONSE, go to next step.
- At this time, PCM is assumed to be defective. Replace PCM. Perform TEST VER-2A.
- Turn ignition off. Visually inspect related connectors and wiring harness. Repair connectors and wiring harness as necessary. Perform TEST VER-2A. If connectors and wiring harness are okay, go to next step.
- At this time, DTC P1698: NO CCD MESSAGES FROM TCM does not exist or is an intermittent problem. Visually inspect related connectors and wiring harness for damage. Look for broken, bent, pushed out or corroded terminals. Repair connectors and wiring harness as necessary. Using scan tool, read and record FREEZE FRAME data. Road test vehicle under conditions in FREEZE FRAME data, paying particular attention to fault setting conditions such as speed, temperature, load and MAP vacuum. Using scan tool, read DTCs. If DTC P1698: NO CCD MESSAGES FROM TCM returns, repeat test. If DTC P1698: NO CCD MESSAGES FROM TCM does not return, see INACTIVE DTC CONDITION. Test is complete.
