Note. DTC P1294: TARGET IDLE NOT REACHED is monitored with engine idling, transmission in Drive (A/T), and no Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) or Throttle Position (TP) sensor DTCs present. DTC may be stored in Powertrain Control Module (PCM) if PCM senses engine speed more than 200 RPM above or 100 RPM below target idle speed for 14 seconds. Three separate failures are required to set a bad trip. Two bad trips are required to set DTC. Possible causes are: vacuum leak, defective throttle body, throttle plate or linkage improperly positioned, defective connectors or defective wiring.
- Start engine and allow it to idle for 60 seconds. If vehicle is equipped with A/T, apply brakes and shift gear selector to Drive. Using scan tool, read TARGET IDLE and ENGINE RPM. If engine RPM is within 200 RPM of target idle, go to next step. If engine RPM is not within 200 RPM of target idle, go to step 6).
- Turn ignition off. Using scan tool, go to SYSTEM TESTS and select IAC WIGGLE TEST. If idle speed raises and lowers during wiggle test, go to next step. If idle speed does not raise and lower during wiggle test, perform DTC P0505: IAC MOTOR CIRCUIT test.
- Turn ignition off. Visually inspect related connectors and wiring harness. Repair connectors and wiring harness as necessary. Perform TEST VER-5A. If connectors and wiring harness are okay, go to next step.
- Start engine and allow it to idle. Using scan tool, go to SYSTEM TESTS and select IAC WIGGLE TEST. While wiggling wiring harness between IAC motor and PCM, monitor engine RPM. IAC motor is located on throttle body. PCM is located in engine compartment. See PCM LOCATION table under SYSTEM DIAGNOSTICS. If IAC motor stops operating at any time while wiggling wiring harness, repair wiring harness where wiggling caused IAC motor to stop operating. Perform TEST VER-5A. If IAC motor does not stop operating, go to next step.
- Turn ignition on, with engine off. Ensure throttle plate is fully closed against stop. Check throttle plate and linkage for binding. Repair throttle plate and linkage as necessary. Perform TEST VER-5A. If throttle plate and linkage are okay, test is complete.
- Start engine and allow it to idle for 60 seconds. NOTE: The following step is invalid if engine has any vacuum leaks.
- Start engine and allow it to idle. Check engine, brake booster and vacuum hoses for leaks. Ensure PCV valve is operating properly. Repair vacuum leaks or replace PCV valve as necessary. Perform TEST VER-5A. If PCV valve is okay and no vacuum leaks exist, go to next step.
- Turn ignition on, with engine off. Ensure throttle plate is fully closed against stop. Check throttle plate and linkage for binding. Repair throttle plate and linkage as necessary. Perform TEST VER-5A. If throttle plate and linkage are okay, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCV valve from intake manifold. Cap vacuum port at intake manifold. Disconnect idle purge hose from throttle body. Install Orifice Tool (6714) on idle purge hose from throttle body. Start engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature. Using scan tool, actuate MIN AIRFLOW. If engine speed is less than 550 RPM, go to next step. If engine speed is 550 RPM or more, replace throttle body. Perform TEST VER-5A. WARNING: Clean throttle body in well ventilated area and wear rubber gloves.
- Turn ignition off. Remove throttle body. While holding throttle open, spray entire throttle body bore with carburetor/throttle body cleaner. Using soft scuff pad, clean throttle body bore and throttle plate. Using compressed air, dry throttle body. Install throttle body. Start engine and allow it to idle. Using scan tool, actuate MIN AIRFLOW. If engine speed is less than 550 RPM, replace throttle body. Perform TEST VER-5A. If engine speed is 550 RPM or more, test is complete.
