VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT
Note. Special tools required: Tappet Adjustment Tool (303-540) and Fan Nozzle Air Gun (303-590). see scheme 203and see scheme 204.
- Rotate engine 3 revolutions in direction of normal operation. Remove valve covers. See «VALVE COVERS»(ref-161157-S36057441092004032200000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Check all valve clearances with camshaft lobe for valve to be checked pointing up (maximum clearance) and engine cold. Check all valve clearances and record all valves. See «VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATION»(ref-161157-S21315438392004032200000) table. If any valves need to be adjusted, go to next step.
- Using a rag, wipe up as much oil as possible from the tappet wells.
- Install the base plate of the Tappet Adjustment Tool (303-540) to one of the heads, using the bolts supplied with the tool. It should be installed along the head, between the 2 camshafts, and bolted to the tapped holes which normally secure the cam cover. (Scheme 34)
- Rotate the crankshaft so that there are 4 tappets which are off the lobes of the camshaft, so that their clearance may be measured.
- Unscrew the knurled knobs of the tappet adjusting tool attachment to the highest position. Install the attachment to the base plate adjacent to the first 2 valves to be adjusted. Tighten the screws to secure the attachment (Scheme 34)
- Position the fingers of tappet adjusting tool attachment on to the outer edges of the tappet. It is essential that the recessed step on each finger locates on the edge of the tappet. The use of a mirror will help as viewing access is restricted. (Scheme 35)
- Tighten the knurled knobs of tappet adjusting tool attachment to compress the valve springs until a firm resistance is felt.
- Surround the immediate working area with clean rag to contain any loose objects and shims displaced by the compressed air. Using the Fan Nozzle Air Gun (303-590), aim compressed air at the edge of the shim to lift it from the tappet. (Scheme 35) Remove the shim from each tappet noting the shims position. Clean and measure each shim.
- Increase or decrease the shim thickness as required to produce the correct valve clearance. See «VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATION»(ref-161157-S21315438392004032200000) table.
- Select the shims of the correct size, lubricate each shim and install each shim to the respective tappet. Shims must be installed with the size marking facing the tappet NOT the cam.
- Loosen the knurled knobs of tappet adjusting tool attachment to allow the valve springs to return to their normal position.
- Check the valve clearance of the 2 valves. If the clearance is correct, remove the tappet adjusting tool attachment from the base plate. Transfer the tappet adjusting tool attachment to the other 2 valves which are in position to be adjusted.
- Repeat the adjustment procedure for the remaining valves to be adjusted.
- Install valve covers. See «VALVE COVERS»(ref-161157-S36057441092004032200000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
