VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT
| CAUTION | Rotate engine clockwise to position camshaft lobe 180 degrees away from shim surface. Rotating crankshaft counterclockwise may cause engine damage. Crankshaft journals are directionally machined. Rotating crankshaft counterclockwise can raise burrs on bearing surfaces, reducing engine life. |
Note. Valve clearance adjustment requires removal and replacement of adjustment shims. Only one shim can be installed for each valve. DO NOT stack shims to attain adjustment.
- Ensure engine is cold. Remove valve covers. See «VALVE COVER»(ref-8293-S33565934782000082200000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Rotate engine clockwise to position camshaft lobe 180 degrees away from shim surface of valve clearance to be measured.
- Using a feeler gauge, measure clearance between camshaft and shim surface. Record clearance for each valve. See «VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATION»(ref-8293-S17384698122004050300000) table. If any valves need to be adjusted, go to next step.
- Using lint-free cloths, remove residual oil surrounding lifter buckets. Rotate engine clockwise until pair of camshaft lobes are 180 degrees away from desired lifter pair. Remove adjacent camshaft bearing cap. Unscrew thumbwheel on Valve Adjusting Tool (303-693) until tool projecting fingers are at their highest position. (Scheme 1)
- Position valve adjusting tool on cylinder head in place of camshaft cap. Ensure cam lobe does not interfere with recess in side plate of tool. Start retaining bolts supplied using a 5-mm hexagon drive key, but DO NOT tighten. Rotate thumbwheel as necessary to access upper retaining bolt.
- Align projecting fingers with buckets of lifter pair (2 per lifter bucket). Ensure cutouts on each finger fit over edge of lifter bucket. If necessary, use a mirror to assist viewing. Using 5-mm hexagon drive key, tighten retaining bolts until adjusting tool is in light contact with cylinder head. DO NOT overtighten.
- Rotate thumbwheel to depress projecting fingers against edges of lifter buckets. Recheck alignment of projecting fingers and fully tighten thumbwheel. Using lint-free cloths, surround shim area.
- Using an air gun with a flat nozzle, blow compressed air at edge of shim to remove shim from lifter buckets. Collect removed shims, ensuring each shim can be matched up with original lifter. Clean shims and measure thickness.
- Calculate thickness of replacement shim by adding original shim thickness to measured shim clearance. Subtract desired clearance to obtain correct shim thickness for correct valve clearance adjustment. See «VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATION»(ref-8293-S17384698122004050300000) table.
- Coat replacement shim with clean engine oil and install with size marking facing lifter. Ensure replacement shim is fully seated in lifter bucket. Unscrew thumbwheel to release lifter buckets. Remove valve adjusting tool.
- Install camshaft cap and tighten bolts to 89 INCH lbs. (10 N.m). Coat cam lobes with clean engine oil where adjustment shims have been replaced before rotating crankshaft. Rotate crankshaft to position for next adjustment, and transfer valve adjusting tool.
