DRAINING & REFILLING COOLING SYSTEM

WARNINGNever remove coolant expansion tank cap under any circumstances while engine is operating unless instructed to. Failure to follow instructions may result in damage to cooling system, engine and/or personal injury. To avoid having scalding hot water or steam blow out of cooling system, use extreme care when removing coolant expansion tank cap from a hot cooling system. Wait until engine has cooled. Wrap a thick cloth around coolant expansion tank cap and turn it slowly until pressure begins to release. Step back while pressure is released from system. When certain all system pressure has been released (still using a cloth), continue removing coolant expansion tank cap.
WARNINGTo avoid personal injury or damage to vehicle, DO NOT operate engine with hood open until fan blade has been examined for possible cracks and separation. Disconnect fan control harness connector prior to performing any underhood service. Cooling fan motor could cycle on even if engine has been turned off. Failure to follow this instruction could result in personal injury.

Note. Refill cooling system with Orange Jaguar Extended Life Coolant (XLC), specification WSS M97B44-D. Because other coolants are not compatible with new XLC, DO NOT use any other types of coolant to top off or refill cooling system.

  1. Allow vehicle engine coolant to cool. Remove expansion tank cap slowly to relieve cooling system pressure. Raise and support vehicle. Remove coolant drain plug and drain coolant into a suitable container. Install drain plug after coolant has drained and carefully tighten to 9.0 INCH lbs. (1.0 N.m). DO NOT overtighten drain plug or damage may result.
  2. Lower vehicle. Open engine air bleed screw located on engine crossover pipe. Open heater air bleed screw located on expansion tank. Fill expansion tank until coolant flows from engine air bleed screw and expansion tank is full.
  3. Close engine air bleed screw. Install expansion tank cap. Leave heater air bleed screw open. Start engine and allow to idle. Set heater controls to 90°F (32°C).
  4. Close heater air bleed screw when a steady stream of coolant flows during engine idle. Allow engine to idle for 5 minutes. Carefully add proper coolant to expansion tank to maintain COLD FILL MAX level.
  5. Open heater air bleed screw to release any trapped air and then close heater air bleed screw. Increase engine speed to 1500 RPM for 3-5 minutes or until heater is blowing hot air. Return engine to idle and verify heater is blowing hot air. Turn engine off and allow vehicle to cool. Correct coolant level as necessary to COLD FILL MAX level.

ENGINE LUBRICATION SYSTEM

Oil distribution within block and cylinder heads is similar to V8 engine. The main differences are the positioning of oil filter and oil cooler and Variable Valve Timing (VVT) system oil supply. Oil is drawn from sump through strainer by oil pump. It then passes through oil filter and oil cooler and back into block. Distribution is via the main gallery and crankshaft oilways to lower crankcase components. Another branch feeds chain tensioners and cylinder head components. An extra oilway in heads provides distribution to VVT system. For oil circuit identification, refer to illustration. (Scheme 12)
