DTC P0116: ECT Sensor Range/Performance Problem Honda Civic VII рестайлинг

Note. If DTC P0117 and/or P0118 are stored at the same time as DTC P0116, troubleshoot those DTCs first, then recheck for DTC P0116.

  1. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
  2. Check the ECT SENSOR in the DATA LIST with the HDS. Is about 176°F (80°C) or higher indicated? YES - Go to step 3. NO - Go to step 7.
  3. Note the coolant temperature from step 2.
  4. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  5. Cool the engine for 1 hour.
  6. Check the ECT SENSOR in the DATA LIST with the HDS. Did the ECT change 3.6°F (2°C) or more? YES - Intermittent failure, system is OK at this time. Check the thermostat and the cooling system. NO - Replace the ECT sensor (see «ECT Sensor Replacement»(ref-176532-S14817985662005050600000) ).
  7. Note the coolant temperature from step 2.
  8. Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 3,000 rpm with no load (in Park or neutral) until the radiator fan comes on, then let it idle.
  9. Check the ECT SENSOR in the DATA LIST with the HDS. Does the ECT change 3.6°F (2°C) or more? YES - Intermittent failure, system is OK at this time. Check the thermostat and the cooling system. NO - Replace the ECT sensor (see «ECT Sensor Replacement»(ref-176532-S14817985662005050600000) ).

  1. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
  2. Check the ECT SENSOR in the DATA LIST with the HDS. Is 302°F (150°C) or higher, or 0 V indicated? YES - Go to step 3. NO - Intermittent failure, system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the ECT sensor and at the ECM.
  3. Disconnect the ECT sensor 2P connector.
  4. Check the ECT SENSOR in the DATA LIST with the HDS. Is 302°F (150°C) or higher, or 0 V indicated? YES - Go to step 5. NO - Replace the ECT sensor (see «ECT Sensor Replacement»(ref-176532-S14817985662005050600000) ).
  5. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  6. Wait for 1 minute. If the radiator fan is running, wait for 1 minute after the radiator fan stops.
  7. Disconnect ECM connector B (24P).
  8. Check for continuity between ECT sensor 2P connector terminal No. 2 and body ground. Is there continuity? YES - Go to step 9. NO - Update the ECM if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good ECM, then recheck (see «ECM UPDATING AND SUBSTITUTION FOR TESTING»(ref-176531-S13764864602005050600000) ). If the symptom/indication goes away with a known-good ECM, replace the original ECM (see «HOW TO SUBSTITUTE OR REPLACE THE ECM»(ref-176531-S19987328622005050600000) ).
  9. Disconnect the climate control unit 30P connector.
  10. Check for continuity between ECT sensor 2P connector terminal No. 2 and body ground. Is there continuity? YES - Go to step 11 (CVT model). Repair short in the wire between the ECM (B8) and the ECT sensor (M/T model). NO - Substitute a known-good climate control unit (see «CLIMATE CONTROL UNIT REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(ref-176558-S00021899282005050600000) ) and recheck.
  11. Disconnect the TCM connector C (17P).
  12. Check for continuity between ECT sensor 2P connector terminal No. 2 and body ground. Is there continuity? YES - Repair short in the wire between the ECM (B8), TCM (C11), and the ECT sensor. NO - Update the TCM if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good TCM, then recheck (see step 1 on «TCM UPDATING AND SUBSTITUTION FOR TESTING»(ref-176648-S13766391002005050900000) ). If the symptom/indication goes away with a known-good TCM, replace the original TCM (see step 1 on «HOW TO TROUBLESHOOT CIRCUITS AT THE TCM»(ref-176648-S20149924332005050900000) ).

  1. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
  2. Check the MIL and the D indicator. (This step is for CVT models only. If the vehicle you are diagnosing is an M/T model, go to step 3.) Is the D indicator the only one on? YES - Go to step 19 . NO - Go to step 3.
  3. Check the ECT SENSOR in the DATA LIST with the HDS. Is-4°F (-20°C) or less, or 5 V indicated? YES - Go to step 4. NO - Intermittent failure, system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the ECT sensor and at the ECM.
  4. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  5. Disconnect the ECT sensor 2P connector.
  6. Connect the ECT sensor 2P connector terminals No. 1 and No. 2 with a jumper wire.
  7. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
  8. Check the ECT SENSOR in the DATA LIST with the HDS. Is -4°F (-20°C) or less, or 5 V indicated? YES - Go to step 9. NO - Replace the ECT sensor (see «ECT Sensor Replacement»(ref-176532-S14817985662005050600000) ).
  9. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  10. Remove the jumper wire.
  11. Connect ECM connector terminals A10 and B8 with a jumper wire.
  12. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
  13. Check the ECT SENSOR in the DATA LIST with the HDS. Is - 4°F (-20°C) or less, or 5 V indicated? YES - Update the ECM if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good ECM then recheck (see «ECM UPDATING AND SUBSTITUTION FOR TESTING»(ref-176531-S13764864602005050600000) ). If the symptom/indication goes away with a known-good ECM, replace the original ECM (see «HOW TO SUBSTITUTE OR REPLACE THE ECM»(ref-176531-S19987328622005050600000) ). NO - Repair open in the wire between the ECM (A10, B8) and the ECT sensor.
  14. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  15. Wait for 1 minute. If the radiator fan is running, wait for 1 minute after it stops.
  16. Disconnect ECM connector A (31P).
  17. Connect ECT sensor 2P connector terminal No. 1 to body ground with a jumper wire.
  18. Check for continuity between ECM connector terminals A10 and body ground. YES - Repair open in the wire between the ECM (B8) and the IAT sensor. NO - Repair open in the wire between the ECM (A10) and the IAT sensor.
  19. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  20. Disconnect the ECT sensor 2P connector.
  21. Disconnect TCM connector C (17P).
  22. Connect ECT sensor 2P connector terminal No. 2 to body ground with a jumper wire.
  23. Check for continuity between TCM connector terminal C11 and body ground. Is there continuity? YES - Update the TCM if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good TCM, then recheck (see step 1 on «TCM UPDATING AND SUBSTITUTION FOR TESTING»(ref-176648-S13766391002005050900000) ). If the symptom/indication goes away with a known-good TCM, replace the original TCM (see step 1 on «HOW TO TROUBLESHOOT CIRCUITS AT THE TCM»(ref-176648-S20149924332005050900000) ). NO - Repair open in the wire between TCM (C11) and the ECT sensor.

  1. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
  2. Check the TP SENSOR in the DATA LIST with the HDS. Is there about 0.5 V when the throttle is fully closed and about 4.5 V when the throttle is fully opened? YES - Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the TP sensor, the TCM, and the ECM, then recheck. If DTC P0122 is indicated, go to step 18 (CVT model only). If DTC P0122 is not indicated, or the vehicle you are diagnosing is an M/T model, intermittent failure, system is OK at this time. NO - Go to step 3.
  3. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  4. Disconnect the TP sensor 3P connector.
  5. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
  6. Measure voltage between TP sensor 3P connector terminals No. 1 and No. 3. Is there about 5 V? YES - Go to step 7. NO - Go to step 17.
  7. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  8. Wait for 1 minute. If the radiator fan is running, wait for 1 minute after the radiator fan stops.
  9. At the sensor side, measure resistance between TP sensor 3P connector terminals No. 1 and No. 2 with the throttle fully closed. Is there about 0.5-0.9 k ohms? YES - Go to step 10. NO - Replace the throttle body (see «THROTTLE BODY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-176536-S03236314582005050600000) ).
  10. Measure resistance between TP sensor 3P connector terminals No. 2 and No. 3 with the throttle fully closed. Is there about 4.5 k ohms ? YES - Go to step 11. NO - Replace the throttle body (see «THROTTLE BODY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-176536-S03236314582005050600000) ).
  11. Disconnect ECM connector A (31P).
  12. At the wire harness side, check for continuity between TP sensor 3P connector terminal No. 2 and body ground. Is there continuity? YES - Go to step 13 (CVT model). Repair short in the wire between the ECM (A15) and the TP sensor (M/T model). NO - Go to step 15.
  13. Disconnect the TCM connector C (17P).
  14. At the wire harness, check for continuity between TP sensor 3P connector terminal No. 2 and body ground. Is there continuity? YES - Repair short in the wire between the ECM (A15), TCM (C9), and the TP sensor. NO - Update the TCM if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good TCM, then recheck (see step 1 on «TCM UPDATING AND SUBSTITUTION FOR TESTING»(ref-176648-S13766391002005050900000) ). If the symptom/indication goes away with a known-good TCM, replace the original TCM (see step 1 on «HOW TO TROUBLESHOOT CIRCUITS AT THE TCM»(ref-176648-S20149924332005050900000) ).
  15. Connect ECM connector terminal A15 to body ground with a jumper wire.
  16. At the wire harness side, check for continuity between TP sensor 3P connector terminal No. 2 and body ground. Is there continuity? YES - Update the ECM if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good ECM, then recheck (see «ECM UPDATING AND SUBSTITUTION FOR TESTING»(ref-176531-S13764864602005050600000) ). If the symptom/indication goes away with a known-good ECM, replace the original ECM (see «HOW TO SUBSTITUTE OR REPLACE THE ECM»(ref-176531-S19987328622005050600000) ). NO - Repair open in the wire between the ECM (A15) and the TP sensor.
  17. Measure voltage between ECM connector terminals A10 and A20. Is there about 5 V? YES - Repair open in the wire between the ECM (A20) and the TP sensor. NO - Update the ECM if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good ECM, then recheck (see «ECM UPDATING AND SUBSTITUTION FOR TESTING»(ref-176531-S13764864602005050600000) ). If the symptom/indication goes away with a known-good ECM, replace the original ECM (see «HOW TO SUBSTITUTE OR REPLACE THE ECM»(ref-176531-S19987328622005050600000) ).
  18. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  19. Disconnect the TP sensor 3P connector.
  20. Disconnect TCM connector C (17P).
  21. Connect TP sensor 3P connector terminal No. 2 to body ground with a jumper wire.
  22. Check for continuity between TCM connector terminal C9 and body ground. Is there continuity? YES - Update the TCM if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good TCM, then recheck (see step 1 on «TCM UPDATING AND SUBSTITUTION FOR TESTING»(ref-176648-S13766391002005050900000) ). If the symptom/indication goes away with a known-good TCM, replace the original TCM (see step 1 on «HOW TO TROUBLESHOOT CIRCUITS AT THE TCM»(ref-176648-S20149924332005050900000) ). NO - Repair open in the wire between TCM (C9) and the TP sensor.

  1. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
  2. Check the TP SENSOR in the DATA LIST with the HDS. Is there about 0.5 V when the throttle is fully closed and about 4.5 V when the throttle is fully opened?   7. Measure voltage between ECM connector terminals A10 and A20. Is there about 5 V? YES - Repair open in the wire between the ECM (A10) and the TP sensor. NO - Update the ECM if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good ECM, then recheck (see «ECM UPDATING AND SUBSTITUTION FOR TESTING»(ref-176531-S13764864602005050600000) ). If the symptom/indication goes away with a known-good ECM, replace the original ECM (see «HOW TO SUBSTITUTE OR REPLACE THE ECM»(ref-176531-S19987328622005050600000) ).
