TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS

The electronic ignition (El) system for the 3.0L 2V engine consists of the following components

  1. Crankshaft position (CKP) sensor
  2. Ignition coil
  3. Spark plugs
  4. Spark plug wires

The crankshaft position (CKP) sensor

  1. is a variable reluctance sensor.
  2. is mounted on the engine front cover.
  3. is triggered by a 36-minus-l tooth trigger wheel located on the crankshaft pulley and damper.
  4. provides base timing and crankshaft speed (RPM) to the powertrain control module (PCM).

Refer to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS for removal and installation of the CKP sensor.

The ignition coil

  1. is controlled by the PCM.
  2. fires 2 spark plugs simultaneously.

The spark plugs

  1. ignite the fuel and air mixture.

The spark plug wires

  1. carry high voltage pulses from the ignition coil to the spark plugs.

See INTRODUCTION - GASOLINE article for diagnosis and testing of the electronic ignition (El) system.

  1. Disconnect the spark plug wires by twisting while pulling upward.
  2. Disconnect the electrical connector from the ignition coil.
  3. Remove the ignition coil. Remove the bolts. Wipe the ignition coil towers with a clean cloth dampened with soap and water.
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
