CHECKING FLUID LEVELS

CAUTIONMultitronic 01J transmission requires a different ATF from that used in fixed-ratio automatic transmissions.
CAUTIONDO NOT start engine when there is very little or no ATF left in transmission following a repair or as a result of massive loss of ATF. Fill transmission first with 4.5-5.0 liters of ATF.

Note. ATF level will vary according to temperature. If ATF level is checked when ATF temperature is too low, overfilling may result. If ATF level is checked when AFT is too high, under filling may result. Overfilling or under filling will impair function of transmission. ATF temperature appears in display of vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051.

  1. Requirements for checking ATF level are as follows: Transmission not in emergency running mode. Vehicle in horizontal position. Vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051 connected, vehicle self-diagnosis mode activated and vehicle system "02 - transmission electronics" selected. Engine idling. Air conditioner and heating must be switched off. At start of test, ATF temperature must not be higher than 30° C; allow transmission to cool down if necessary.
  2. Using VAS 5051, select diagnosis function "08-Read data block" from menu (1). (Scheme 148) Enter "010" into key block (2) to select "Display Group number 010" and confirm entry with "Q" key. (Scheme 149) Read ATF temperature in display zone (3). see scheme 4 Check ATF level once ATF temperature is 86° F (30° C).
  3. With brake pedal depressed, shift through all selector lever positions (P, R, N and D) at idling speed, and remain in each position for approximately 2 seconds. Raise and support vehicle.
  4. Release mounting parts (3 and 4), and remove rear portion of sound insulation. (Scheme 150) Place container under transmission. When ATF has reached 95° F (35° C), unscrew ATF inspection plug (B). (Scheme 151)
  5. Approximately 0.1 pint will always drain initially from internal oil level pipe when plug is unscrewed. Screw fitting on tap of filling device (VAS 5162) into opening of ATF inspection plug (B). (Scheme 151)
  6. Turn tap toward filling hose (bottom arrow). (Scheme 152) ATF runs into transmission. Hold suitable container under outlet of filling device. Check ATF level by turning tap toward outlet (bottom arrow). see scheme 8
  7. If transmission is filled with proper quantity of ATF, a small amount of fluid should drain out of inspection bore once ATF temperature reaches between 100° F (35° C) and 113° F (45° C). For warmer climates, maximum temperature may rise to 122° F (50° C). If no further ATF is discharged, turn tap back toward filling hose, and pour in more ATF. Check ATF level after filling again.
  8. Replace ATF inspection plug and tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-169513-S17642381772004121000000).
  9. Using VAS 5051, press left arrow button to exit from function "08 - Read data block". Select diagnosis function "06 - End output". Switch off ignition and disconnect DLC. Install sound insulation panel.

RECOMMENDED FLUIDS

DRAINING & REFILLING

CAUTIONDO NOT run engine or tow vehicle when there is no ATF in transmission.
CAUTIONBefore installing a replacement transmission, always blow through ATF cooler and ATF lines with compressed air (not more than 10 bar) and replace additional ATF filter.

  1. Connect ATF reservoir from VAS 5162 filling system at highest possible point on vehicle. see scheme 10 Raise and support vehicle. Loosen mounting parts (1-5), and remove noise insulation tray. (Scheme 150) Place drain pan under transaxle.
  2. Using multi-point bit 3357, remove drain plug (A). (Scheme 151) Drain ATF. Install drain plug and tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-169513-S17642381772004121000000).
  3. Flush ATF lines and ATF cooler. See «ATF LINES & ATF COOLER FLUSHING»(ref-169513-S12028164082004121000000). Unscrew ATF inspection plug (B). Screw fitting on tap of filling devise (VAS 5162) into opening of ATF inspection plug.
  4. Turn flow valve in direction of filling hose (lower curved arrow) to allow ATF to flow into transmission. (Scheme 152) Fill transmission with at least 4.8-5.3 Qts. (4.5-5.0 L) of ATF. Move selector lever to position "P", start engine and idle. Check ATF level and top off as necessary. See «CHECKING FLUID LEVELS»(ref-169513-S17509756822004121000000).

  1. Loosen mounting parts (1-5), and remove noise insulation front and rear portions. (Scheme 150)
  2. Place drip tray beneath transmission. Remove Union nuts (3), and disconnect ATF lines. see scheme 11
  3. Remove ATF lines mounting bracket nut (2). Remove bolt (2). see scheme 12 Disconnect ATF lines from transmission and remove "O" rings (1) from connection (A and B). Slide hose approximately 18 mm diameter onto ATF line (A), and secure with hose clamp. Place other end of hose in drip tray.
  4. Using compressed air gun, blow through ATF line (A). Move hose on ATF line (B) and repeat procedure. Remove and dispose auxiliary ATF filter. See «ADDITIONAL ATF FILTER»(ref-169513-S22737546142004121000000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Place hose below on ATF cooler into drip tray. Install compressed air gun on ATF cooler and blow through cooler.
  5. Install NEW auxiliary ATF filter. See «ADDITIONAL ATF FILTER»(ref-169513-S22737546142004121000000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Re-secure ATF lines using NEW "O" rings on transmission and on ATF cooler. Tighten all nuts and bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-169513-S17642381772004121000000).
  6. Check ATF level, and top off as necessary. See «CHECKING FLUID LEVELS»(ref-169513-S17509756822004121000000).
