BATTERY DISCONNECT PROCEDURES

CAUTIONRadio/cassette or radio/CD player is equipped with an anti-theft protection circuit. Whenever battery is disconnected, radio will go into anti-theft mode. When battery is reconnected, radio will display CODE, and will be inoperative until proper code number is entered. Obtain security code before disconnecting battery.

Note. When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle.

Before beginning repairs on the electrical system

  1. Obtain the anti-theft radio security code.
  2. Switch off all electrical consumers.
  3. Switch ignition off and remove ignition key.
  4. On vehicles equipped with Audi Telematics by OnStar, switch-off the emergency (back-up) battery for the Telematic/Telephone Control Module prior to disconnecting vehicle battery. See «Back-Up Battery For Telematic/Telephone Control Module»(/audi/a4/b6-2000-2006/remont/automatic-trans/#continuously-variable-transmission-cvt-01j-removal-installation__back-up-battery-for-telematictelephone-control-module) .
  5. Disconnect negative ( - ) battery terminal.

After reconnecting vehicle battery

  1. Re-code and check operation of anti-theft radio
  2. Check operation of clock and power windows. See «Power Window Control Module»(/audi/a4/b6-2000-2006/remont/automatic-trans/#continuously-variable-transmission-cvt-01j-removal-installation__power-window-control-module) .
  3. On vehicles equipped with Audi Telematics by OnStar, switch-on the emergency (back-up) battery for the Telematic/Telephone Control Module. See «Back-Up Battery For Telematic/Telephone Control Module»(/audi/a4/b6-2000-2006/remont/automatic-trans/#continuously-variable-transmission-cvt-01j-removal-installation__back-up-battery-for-telematictelephone-control-module) .

Power Window Control Module

If the battery is disconnected, the window control module loses its memory of current position and the automatic up/down function. To reset

  1. Switch ignition on.
  2. Lift window switch up to run power windows up to stop.
  3. Operate all window lifters again for at least 1 second in "close" position to activate automatic up/down function.
  4. Press window switch briefly.
  5. The selected side window must automatically run to the bottom stop.

Back-Up Battery For Telematic/Telephone Control Module

Switching back-up battery on or off requires using factor scan tool VAG 1551 or VAS 5051 Scan Tool (ST), or equivalent aftermarket scan tool.

Under "Rapid data transfer" operating mode 1, select "Telematics" address word 75. Then select function "10 - Adaptation".

Emergency (back-up) battery, switch on/off, reset time register can be selected from this mode. Consult scan tool operator's manual for instructions.

Removal (1.8L)

Secure counterhold VW 558 to driver plate using hex bolt M8 x 45. Place two M10 hex nuts between counterhold and drive plate.

Mark position of drive plate relative to engine. Unbolt drive plate.

  1. Locate drive plate with shim -2- and packing plate -1-. (Scheme 163) Lug -arrow- must face toward torque converter.
  2. Insert at least 3 old securing bolts and tighten to 30 Nm.
  3. Perform measurement by passing sliding calliper with depth gauge through hole used for securing converter. (Scheme 164) Specification: 18.9-20.5 mm.
  4. If measured value exceeds specification, remove drive plate again and correct value by installing with/without shim -2-. Tighten bolts to 30 Nm again.
  5. Measure distance again.
  6. If measured value matches specification, install new bolts and tighten. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/audi/a4/b6-2000-2006/remont/automatic-trans/#continuously-variable-transmission-cvt-01j-removal-installation__torque-specifications).

Removal (3.0L)

Note. Transmission is removed.

WARNINGTurning of the engine must only occur in direction of engine rotation (clockwise) at the crankshaft.
  1. Turn crankshaft via center bolt of toothed belt gear in direction of engine rotation to TDC Cyl. 3 marking.
  2. If installed, disconnect electrical harness connector at after-run coolant pump.
  3. Unscrew sealing plug of TDC mark at cylinder block.
  4. Thread T40026 locking pin into the hole of the removed sealing plug and tighten.
  5. Mark drive plate to engine. Remove drive plate.
  1. Installation is reverse of removal, noting the following: Drive plate is bolted to the crankshaft with a centering bushing (arrow). (Scheme 165)
  2. Replace bolts and tighten. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/audi/a4/b6-2000-2006/remont/automatic-trans/#continuously-variable-transmission-cvt-01j-removal-installation__torque-specifications). Remove T10026 alignment bolt and thread sealing plug of TDC marking with new O-ring into cylinder block.

  1. Installation is reverse of removal procedure. Note the following: Secure all hose connection with correct hose clips (same as original equipment). Prior to installing replacement transmission, always blow through ATF cooler and ATF lines with compressed air (no more than 10 bar), and replace additional ATF filter. See «SERVICING - A/T (01J)»(/audi/a4/b6-2000-2006/remont/automatic-trans/#automatic-transmission-servicing-at-01j-multitronic-cvt) article. When performing repairs, replace self-locking nuts and bolts. Replace bolts which have specified tightening angle as well as seals and gaskets. All cable ties which are opened or cut open on removal must be replaced in same position when installing.
  2. Before installing transmission, tie electrical wiring to one side so that it cannot be trapped between engine and transmission. Ensure dowel sleeves for centralizing engine/transmission are in cylinder block. Install, if necessary.
  3. Install intermediate plate or spacer plate on dowel sleeves. Press selector shaft lever (A) at transmission to rear as far as possible, until parking lock engages. see scheme 52
  4. Lift transmission carefully, and move into installation position with transmission support (3282). (Scheme 189) Secure transmission to engine.
  5. On Cabriolet models, when installing bottom engine-to-transmission bolts, use support bar (10-222 A) to lift engine until two nuts (3), on left and right sides, contact bottom mount. (Scheme 191)
  6. On all models, prior to inserting lower set of bolts connecting transmission-to-engine, lift transmission up slightly at rear. Tighten four bottom engine-to-transmission bolts to specification. See «TRANSMISSION MOUNTING BOLTS»(/audi/a4/b6-2000-2006/remont/automatic-trans/#continuously-variable-transmission-cvt-01j-removal-installation__transmission-mounting-bolts) under TORQUE SPECIFICATION.

  11. Bolt transmission support to transmission (arrows). (Scheme 186) Install ATF lines with new seals into transmission by hand, as far as possible. Bolt ATF lines on. Install exhaust system free of stress.
  12. Install axle shafts to transmission flanges. Install axle shaft guards on left and right sides. see scheme 46
  13. Install tunnel crossmember. see scheme 53
  14. Check selector lever cable setting, ATF level and oil level in front final drive. See «SERVICING - A/T (01J)»(/audi/a4/b6-2000-2006/remont/automatic-trans/#automatic-transmission-servicing-at-01j-multitronic-cvt) article. Align exhaust system free of stress.
  15. Check all electrical connections and routing.
  16. After connecting battery, enter anti-theft code for radio. Fully close power windows to stop. Activate all power window switches for at least one second to activate automatic window raising/lowering. Set clock to correct time. See «BATTERY DISCONNECT PROCEDURES»(/audi/a4/b6-2000-2006/remont/automatic-trans/#continuously-variable-transmission-cvt-01j-removal-installation__battery-disconnect-procedures).

Note. Lower vehicle and final tighten bolts/nuts on suspension components with bonded rubber bushings.
