On Board Diagnostic (OBD) system, operation

The automatic transmission controls are electronic/hydraulic.

The Transmission Control Module (TCM) -J217- receives information from components which influence the shifts. Based on this information, the control module activates the applicable solenoid valves in the valve body. The solenoids route the fluid pressure generated by the ATF pump to the clutches or brakes to be closed.

Transmission Control Module (TCM) DTC recognition

The term "On Board Diagnostic system" refers to the electrical/electronic part of the controls.

The control module is equipped with a DTC memory so that in the event of the failure of an electrical/electronic component, or in the event of an open circuit, the cause of the fault can be determined quickly.

DTCs are recognized by means of electrical signals. If malfunctions occur in the sensors or components being monitored, they are stored in the DTC memory indicating the type and location of the DTC.

If a DTC is present, it is initially saved as a statistical DTC. If the DTC is no longer present, it first of all becomes a sporadic DTC (SP).

DTCs that are saved in the DTC memory as sporadically present are displayed as "sporadically occurring DTCs" during a DTC scan. "SP" appears on the right side of the display. With the printer switched on, "sporadically occurring DTCs" are printed out following the DTC scan.

DTCs that are saved in the DTC memory as sporadically occurring DTCs are automatically deleted after 40 engine cold starts (and subsequent transmission warm up).

The potential of the On Board Diagnostic system can only be fully realized by using the Vehicle Diagnosis, Measurement and Information System VAS 5051.

Functions which the VAS 5051 Vehicle Diagnosis, Measurement and Information system can detect. Refer to List of Selectable Functions , Table of Selectable Functions.

Safety functions of the Transmission Control Module (TCM)

In the event of a failure of individual or multiple components or sensors, the Transmission Control Module -J217- activates replacement functions or limp-home programs. This ensures non-destructive operation of the automatic transmission with the concomitant effect on the function and quality of the shifts.

If critical DTCs occur and with the Transmission Control Module (TCM) J217 activated, the gear currently engaged is initially held. As soon as the situation with respect to the transmission and vehicle safety permits, the Transmission Control Module -J217- activates "Mechanical Limp Home with Active Control Module".

Mechanical Limp Home with Active Control Module

  1. Transmission shifts out of all forward gears into the hydraulic 4th gear. Converter clutch is open. All solenoids have no power.
  2. Maximum shift pressure on the powertrain elements.
  3. Reverse gear can be engaged. Shift lock (in "P" and "N") is active.

Scheme 522

Scheme 522
  1. All segments of the gear selector display are fully illuminated.

In the event of a Transmission Control Module (TCM) -J217- failure (e.g power supply failure or harness connector disconnected) the transmission immediately continues to operate in "Mechanical Limp Home with Non-Active Control Module".

Mechanical Limp Home with Non-Active Control Module

Scheme 523
  1. All segments of the gear selector display are dark.
  2. The Transmission Control Module (TCM) -J217- is completely inoperative, which means that On Board Diagnostic (OBD) is not possible.

Safety Precautions

If the use of test and measuring equipment is required during test drives, the following precautions must be observed

WARNINGThe test and measurement equipment must always be secured on the rear seat and operated from there by a second person. If the test and measurement equipment is operated from the passenger seat, the person sitting there could be injured in an accident as the result of deployment of the passenger side airbag.

In order to prevent injuries to persons and/or destruction of electrical and electronic components, the following precautions must be observed

  1. Attach measurement and test equipment terminals only with the ignition switched OFF.
  2. With some tests it may happen that the control module detects and saves a trouble code. For this reason, the DTC memory must be scanned and if necessary deleted after completing all tests and repairs.
  3. Disconnecting and attaching battery terminals must only be carried out with the ignition switched OFF, otherwise the Transmission Control Module (TCM) can be damaged.
CAUTIONObserve precautions when disconnecting battery terminals. Refer to 27 BATTERY, STARTER, GENERATOR, CRUISE CONTROL 27 BATTERY, STARTER, GENERATOR, CRUISE CONTROL for ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT, CABRIOLET

Notes on towing

CAUTIONWhen the vehicle is towed, the transmission selector lever must be in position N, and it must not be towed more than 50 km and not above 50 km/h, otherwise the transmission will be destroyed.

Note. It is not possible to tow the vehicle in order to start the engine, for example when the battery is too weak or the starter is not working.

Control element diagnosis/Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM)

Note. Control element diagnosis can only be performed if the ignition is ON, the selector lever is in position "P", the engine is not running and the vehicle is stationary. Control element diagnosis is terminated if the engine is started. Solenoid Valve 1 -N88-, Solenoid Valve 2 -N89-, Solenoid Valve 3 -N90-, Pressure Control Valve 1 -N215- and Shift Lock Solenoid -N110- are tested acoustically during control element diagnosis. Ambient noises must be avoided during the acoustical test. Pressure Control Valve 2 -N216-, Pressure Control Valve 3 -N217- and Pressure Control Valve 4 -N218- are energized through control element diagnosis. Acoustical testing is made more difficult by the fact that these valves click very quietly, which can be heard only in the area of the ATF oil pan. However, any electrical faults that occur when the valves are energized are saved in the DTC memory by the On Board Diagnostic (OBD) system. During control element diagnosis the individual actuators are energized for approximately 45 seconds, unless the test is automatically advanced to the next actuator by pressing the delta button. To repeat control element diagnosis, switch the ignition OFF and ON again.

If a control module responds and identifies itself, the number of stored trouble codes or "No trouble code" is displayed.

Any stored DTCs in a system are shown in sequence. Then the VAS 5051 sends the next address word.

If a DTC referring to "Data bus drive..." Or "...CAN-bus" is displayed

  1. Check whether correct Engine Control Module (ECM) and other CAN-capable control modules have been installed (Part No. and Code).

If the correct control modules have been installed

  1. Check whether multiple connectors for control modules are fully seated.

If the multiple connectors are fully seated.

  1. Check CAN-bus system.

Checking a "Dual-Wire-Bus System"

Communication takes place between two or more control modules over a "Dual-Wire-Bus System".

  1. Analyze DTCs stored in control modules.

Note. The analysis helps you to pinpoint the wiring fault.

Example 1

Based on the DTCs entered in the DTC memories, you can see that control module 1 is not connected to control modules 2 and 3.

Control moduleDTCs entered in the DTC memory
1Message missing from control module 2 Message missing from control module 3
2Message missing from control module 1
3Message missing from control module 1
  1. Switch ignition OFF.
  2. Disconnect control modules connected by bus wiring and check whether one bus wiring connection has an open circuit.

Refer to Wiring Diagrams, Electrical Troubleshooting and Component Locations binder

  1. If no malfunction is found in bus wiring, replace control module 1.

Example 2

Based on the DTCs entered in the DTC memories, you can see that control module 2 is not connected to control modules 1 and 3.

Control moduleDTCs entered in the DTC memory
1Message missing from control module 2
2Message missing from control module 1 Message missing from control module 3
3Message missing from control module 2
  1. Switch ignition OFF.
  2. Disconnect control modules connected by bus wiring and check whether one of bus wiring connections has an open circuit.

Refer to Wiring Diagrams, Electrical Troubleshooting and Component Locations binder

  1. If no malfunction is found in bus wiring, replace control module 2.

Example 3

Based on the DTCs entered in the DTC memory, you see that no transmission or reception activity is possible in any of the control modules.

Control moduleDTCs entered in the DTC memory
1Data bus drive faulty
2Data bus drive faulty
3Data bus drive faulty
  1. Switch ignition OFF.

Scheme 572

Scheme 572
  1. Disconnect control modules connected by bus wiring and inspect bus wiring for a short circuit to B+ and to ground.

Refer to Wiring Diagrams, Electrical Troubleshooting and Component Locations binder

If you are unable to determine any cause in the bus wiring for the DTC "Data bus drive faulty", check to see whether one of the control modules is responsible for this DTC.

Test requirement

  1. VAS 5051 Vehicle Diagnosis, Measurement and Information System connected and Vehicle Self Diagnosis selected. Refer to «VAS 5051 Vehicle Diagnosis, Measurement and Information System, connecting and selecting functions»(/audi/a4/b6-2000-2006/remont/automatic-trans/#5-speed-automatic-transmission-01v-on-board-diagnostic-obd-2__vas-5051-vehicle-diagnosis-measurement-and) .

All the control modules which use the CAN-bus for communication are disconnected. The ignition is switched OFF.

  1. Connect one control module.

Display on VAS 5051

  1. Switch ignition ON.
  2. Touch appropriate vehicle system in Display -1-.
  3. Read DTC memory of control module just connected and delete it.
  4. Touch delta button.
  1. In display touch -1- diagnostic function "06 - End output".
  2. Switch ignition OFF and ON again.
  3. Leave ignition switched ON for 10 seconds. Then, using scan tool, read DTC memory of control module just connected.
  4. If DTC "Data bus drive faulty" is read, control module just connected must be replaced.
