Center Differential & Final Drives
Check fluid level at 20,000 mile intervals. Fluid is filled for life. No changing is required.
CHECKING FLUID LEVELS
| CAUTION | Multitronic 01J transmission requires a different ATF from that used in fixed-ratio automatic transmissions. |
| CAUTION | DO NOT start engine when there is very little or no ATF left in transmission following a repair or as a result of massive loss of ATF. Fill transmission first with 4.5-5.0 liters of ATF. |
Note. ATF level will vary according to temperature. If ATF level is checked when ATF temperature is too low, overfilling may result. If ATF level is checked when AFT is too high, under filling may result. Overfilling or under filling will impair function of transmission. ATF temperature appears in display of vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051.
01J Transaxle
- Requirements for checking ATF level are as follows. Transmission not in emergency running mode. Vehicle in horizontal position. Vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051 connected, vehicle self-diagnosis mode activated and vehicle system "02 - transmission electronics" selected. Engine idling. Air conditioner and heating must be switched off. At start of test, ATF temperature must not be higher than 30 C; allow transmission to cool down if necessary.
- Using VAS 5051, select diagnosis function "08-Read data block" from menu (1). (Scheme 96) Enter "010" into key block (2) to select "Display Group number 010" and confirm entry with "Q" key. (Scheme 97) Read ATF temperature in display zone (3). (Scheme 98)
- With brake pedal depressed, shift through all selector lever positions (P, R, N and D) at idling speed, and remain in each position for approximately 2 seconds. Raise and support vehicle.
- Release quick fasteners (2 and 3), and remove sound insulation. (Scheme 99) Place container under transmission. When ATF has reached 95° F (35° C), unscrew ATF inspection plug (B). (Scheme 100)
- Approximately 0.1 pint will always drain initially from internal oil level pipe when plug is unscrewed. If transmission is filled with proper quantity of ATF, a small amount of fluid should drain out of inspection bore once ATF temperature reaches between 100° F (35° C) and 113° F (45° C). For warmer climates, maximum temperature may rise to 122° F (50° C).
- If ATF fluid has not drained out of inspection bore when temperature reaches 104° F (40° C), top off ATF. See «FLUID CAPACITIES»(/audi/a4/b6-2000-2006/remont/automatic-trans/#automatic-transmission-servicing-at-01j-multitronic-cvt__fluid-capacities). Replace ATF inspection plug and tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/audi/a4/b6-2000-2006/remont/automatic-trans/#automatic-transmission-servicing-at-01j-multitronic-cvt__torque-specifications).
- Using VAS 5051, press left arrow button to exit from function "08 - Read data block". Select diagnosis function "06 - End output". Switch off ignition and disconnect DLC. Install sound insulation panel.
Front Final Drive
| CAUTION | The vehicle must be absolutely horizontal when checking transmission oil level. This work is best performed over an inspection pit or using a 4-column lifting platform. |
| CAUTION | The prescribed oil level is to be adhered to exactly; the transmission reacts very sensitively to over-filling. |
Scheme 96
- Drive vehicle a short distance to warm up gear oil to approximately 140°F (60°C). Position vehicle on level surface (4-post hoist or over pit). Turn engine off and let gear oil settle for 5 minutes.
- Release quick-fasteners (2 and 3) and remove rear sound insulation. (Scheme 99) If equipped, loosen bolt on sound insulation cover above left drive shaft. Disengage retainer and remove noise insulation cover. (Scheme 139)
- Place drain pan under final drive. Remove fill plug (arrow) on side of final drive. (Scheme 101) Check oil level with locally manufactured tool (e.g. a piece of angled wire). Gear oil level should be at 0.335" (8.5) mm below lower edge of fill hole. Add appropriate fluid as required. See «RECOMMENDED FLUIDS»(/audi/a4/b6-2000-2006/remont/automatic-trans/#automatic-transmission-servicing-at-01j-multitronic-cvt__recommended-fluids).
- Install NEW fill plug. Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/audi/a4/b6-2000-2006/remont/automatic-trans/#automatic-transmission-servicing-at-01j-multitronic-cvt__torque-specifications). Install noise insulation

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
| WARNING | Vehicle is equipped with Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system. When servicing vehicle, use care to avoid accidental air bag deployment. SIR system-related components are located in various locations throughout interior and exterior of vehicle, depending on application. Do not use electrical test equipment on or near these circuits. If necessary, deactivate SIR system before servicing components. See appropriate AIR BAG DEACTIVATION PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION. |
BATTERY DISCONNECT PRECAUTIONS
Note. When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle.
| CAUTION | Radio/cassette or radio/CD player is equipped with an anti-theft protection circuit. Whenever battery is disconnected, radio will go into anti-theft mode. When battery is reconnected, radio will display CODE, and will be inoperative until proper code number is entered. Obtain security code before disconnecting battery. |
Air Bag
| WARNING | NO ONE must be in vehicle when battery is connected. This is a safety precaution in case an air bag module activates when power is connected. |
ECM
If connector is disconnected from ECM or battery is disconnected, all adaptation values in control module are erased. To achieve optimal anti-theft protection for vehicle, an anti-theft immobilizer was installed. Anti-theft immobilizer is a system for enabling/locking Engine Control Module (ECM) through the W-wire.
This system cannot be circumvented, it is necessary to perform adaptation of anti-theft immobilizer using VAS 5052 in On Board Diagnostic function. The great availability of equipment options makes adaptation of ECM necessary (e.g. cruise control system). This "writing" function is not possible with a generic scan tool, therefore it is necessary to use VAS 5052 in On Board Diagnostic function for this purpose. DTC memory content will remain intact however. If engine is started after this, a rough, uneven idle can result. In this case, ECM readiness code must be regenerated.
ECM Readiness Code
While limited diagnostic information is available, vehicle manufacturer does not support diagnostic information using aftermarket scan tools. To properly diagnose vehicle, it is recommended to use VAS 5051 scan tool with VAS 5051/1 adapter cable or VAG 1551 scan tool with 1551/3A adapter cable and VAG 1598/31 test box.
Readiness code must be generated when Engine Control Module (ECM) memory is cleared, battery voltage is disconnected or ECM is disconnected. To generate readiness code, vehicle must be stationary, transmission in Park or Neutral, all electrical consumers off, A/C switched off and coolant temperature at least 176° F (80° C). If possible, it is best to warm-up vehicle by test driving. Connect scan tool to DLC. DLC is located behind cover under left side of steering column.
Power Windows
After connecting battery, completely open and close all power windows.
Radio & Clock
| CAUTION | Turn ignition to OFF position. BEFORE disconnecting negative battery cable, obtain anti-theft radio security code. Disconnect negative battery cable. After reconnecting battery, re-code and check operation of anti-theft radio. |
Vehicles are equipped with an anti-theft stereo system that requires a code to activate. Record stereo code BEFORE disconnecting negative battery cable. Disconnect negative battery cable. Turn ignition to ON position. Reconnect negative battery cable. Enter code into stereo and reset clock.
Telematics
Note. A4 and A4 Quattro are equipped with Audi Telematics by OnStar(R).
To avoid unnecessary discharge of emergency (back-up) battery, it must always be switched off, prior to disconnecting vehicle battery, and switched back on after vehicle battery is reconnected.
Use VAS 5051 in mode "Guided Fault Finding". Enter appropriate model, equipment and model year. Press ">" to confirm. After control modules have been registered, and DTC memories checked, press "Go To". Use the following prompts to switch off/on emergency (back-up) battery
- Select "Function/Component Selection".

ADDITIONAL ATF FILTER
| CAUTION | Before fitting a replacement transmission, always blow through the ATF cooler and ATF lines with compressed air (not more than 10 bar) and replace the additional ATF filter. If the ATF that comes out is very dirty, the ATF lines and ATF cooler must additionally be flushed out with clean ATF. |
