Required Test Equipment

Honda Electrical System Analyzer (ED-18 Battery tester) T/N INBED18LLH

Software Version

Make sure you have the latest software in the ED-18 To check the version on the do this

1. Press the POWER button
2. Select Reports, then press ENTER
3. Select Version, then press ENTER

If you do not have the correct version, call the Tools Hotline at 800-346-6327

Using the ED-18 Battery Tester

Note. For set up, customization, and other available features, refer to the ED-18 user's manual.

1. Remove the bulkhead cover (see «ENGINE COMPARTMENT REPLACEMENT»(/acura/tl/iv-2008-2011/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#exterior-trim__engine-compartment-cover-replacement) )
2. Connect the leads to the positive and negative terminal of the battery
3. Use the arrow keys to select the battery test, then press enter, then follow the prompts NOTE: Make sure to enter the correct cold cranking ampere rating of the battery If the number is not entered correctly, the result will not be accurate
4. Here are the five possible battery conditions

1. Good Battery The battery has at least 60 percent of its charge and requires no action
2. Good-Recharge The battery condition appears to be good, but charging is recommended and then retest See your battery charger's instructions to fully charge the battery, then recheck Do not charge the battery using the vehicle's alternator
3. Charge and Retest The battery condition is not known because its charge is too low Recharge the battery, then retest See your battery's instructions to fully charge the battery, then recheck Do not charge the battery using the vehicle's alternator
4. Replace Battery The battery condition is poor Replace it
5. Bad Cell There is a problem with the battery Replace it

Disconnection

Note. Some systems store data in memory (including seat position, mirror position, etc) that is lost when the battery is disconnected Do the following procedures before disconnecting the battery

1. Make sure you have the anti-theft code(s) for the audio system and/or the audio-navigation system (if equipped)
2. If you are replacing the audio unit and/or the audio-navigation unit, write down the audio presets (AM and FM), and the XM audio presets (if equipped)
3. Make sure the ignition switch is in LOCK (0), or the vehicle ignition in the OFF mode
4. Remove the bulkhead cover (see «ENGINE COMPARTMENT COVER REPLACEMENT»(/acura/tl/iv-2008-2011/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#exterior-trim__engine-compartment-cover-replacement) )
5. Disconnect and isolate the negative cable from the battery NOTE: Always disconnect the negative cable from the battery first
6. Disconnect the positive cable from the battery

Reconnection

Note. Some systems store data in memory (including seat position, mirror position, etc) that is lost when the battery is disconnected Do the following procedures to restore the systems back to normal operation

Scheme 9

1. Clean the battery terminals
2. Test the battery (see «BATTERY TEST»(/acura/tl/iv-2008-2011/remont/body-electrical/#battery) )
3. Reconnect the positive cable (A) to the battery (B) first, then reconnect the negative cable (C) to the battery NOTE: Always connect the positive cable to the battery first
4. Apply multipurpose grease to the terminals to prevent corrosion
5. Install the bulkhead cover (see «ENGINE COMPARTMENT COVER REPLACEMENT»(/acura/tl/iv-2008-2011/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#exterior-trim__engine-compartment-cover-replacement) )
6. Enter the anti-theft code(s) for the audio system and/or the audio-navigation system (if equipped)
7. Enter the audio presets (if applicable), and enter the XM audio presets (if equipped)
8. Set the clock (for vehicles without navigation)

Note. The battery terminal disconnection/reconnection procedure (see BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION AND RECONNECTION ) must be done before and after doing this procedure Some systems store data in memory that is lost when the battery is disconnected

Scheme 10

1. Do the battery terminal disconnection procedure (see «BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION AND RECONNECTION»(/acura/tl/iv-2008-2011/remont/body-electrical/#battery) )
2. Remove the three clips and air intake duct splash separator (A)
3. Remove the two nuts (B) securing the battery setting plate (C), then remove the battery setting plate and the battery (D)

Scheme 11

1. Install the battery (A), then install the battery setting plate (B)
2. Tighten the two nuts (C) equally until the battery is stable NOTE: Do not deform the battery setting plate by over-tightening the nuts
3. Install the intake air duct (D) and three clips
4. Do the battery terminal reconnection procedure (see «BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION AND RECONNECTION»(/acura/tl/iv-2008-2011/remont/body-electrical/#battery) )

Note. Make sure the battery is installed correctly, and the positive terminal and the negative terminal are not reversed-connected
