Information concerning B4184S and B4204S

From and including May 1997 there is only one replacement part engine control module (ECM) for each type of engine. These engine control modules (ECM) applies to both cars without, and for earlier cars, cars with pulsed secondary air injection system (PAIR) pump.

The engine control module (ECM) no longer controls the secondary air injection system (PAIR) pump when it is fitted to cars with manual transmission and pulsed secondary air injection system (PAIR) pump.

These cars however still meet the statutory requirement for emission levels.

Scheme 181

1. Remove the side panels from center console.
2. Drill out the security screws to the right of the bracket with screwdriver (P/N 998 5477). NOTE: Ensure that no filings fall onto the carpet.
3. Pull out the right-hand side of the bracket.
4. Remove the engine control module (ECM) from its clamp and disconnect the connector.

Before replacing with a new engine control module (ECM), the Verlog- code in the old control module must be blanked. The code is erased using the Scan Tool (ST), which communicates with the immobilizer system. If the code is not erased, the control module cannot be tested if it is returned under warranty, or if it is to be installed in another car. The reason for this is that the module has learned the Verlog code generated by the immobilizer control module in the car in which the module has been installed. After this, the module only works with that particular immobilizer if the Verlog code is not erased.

Note. The Verlog-code can only be erased using the particular immobilizer- control module whose Verlog-code the engine control module (ECM) has learned.

Erase the Verlog code in the engine control module (ECM)) according to the service information for the Volvo Scan Tool (ST). PIN is obtained from the Volvo central car register. Use the same procedure as for ordering a mechanical key.

Note. Keep the ignition switched off after erasure until the engine control module (ECM)) has been removed from the car. Otherwise the engine control module (ECM) will relearn the Verlog code.

Reinstallation

1. Reinstall bracket and press together.
2. Install a new security screw.
3. Tighten the security screw until the screw head breaks off.

Preparatory work

Remove the transmission according to Gearbox, removing .

Removing carrier plate

Remove the engine speed (RPM) sensor with the bracket. Place it to one side.

Block the carrier plate using gear sector 9995112 .

Remove

1. all screws
2. the carrier plate
3. gear sector «9995112»(ref-403953-S01318438012011061000000) .

Check the crankshaft seal for leakage.

Note. Ensure that the mating surfaces on the crankshaft and carrier plate are completely clean.

Use tool 9995678 , which consists of 3 studs with nuts.

Install

1. The 3 studs belonging to tool «9995678»(ref-403953-S14391401472011061000000) , distributed as illustrated
2. the carrier plate.

Note. Check that the locating pin on the crankshaft is positioned opposite the hole in the carrier plate.

Locate gear sector 9995112 against the carrier plate.

Pull the flywheel towards the crankshaft using the three nuts on special tool 9995678 .

Install 7 new screws. Tighten crosswise. Tighten to 45 Nm .

Remove the 3 nuts and studs.

Install the remaining 3 new screws. Tighten the screws. Tighten to 45 Nm . Then angle-tighten all 10 screws crosswise to 50°.

Install the engine speed (RPM) sensor with the bracket. Tighten to 10 Nm .

Finishing

Install the transmission according to Transmission, installing .
