  4. Carefully remove the switch from the instrument panel.
  5. Disconnect the switch. Check whether the ON or OFF status is displayed.

Is the OFF status displayed?

Replacing the component

Try a new DSA switch according to Replacing the DSA switch .

Try a new climate control module according to Comfort module .

Note. A diagnostic trouble code (DTC) may be stored if a DSA control module for model year 2003- is installed in a -2002 model year car. Check that the correct version of the control module is installed.

Checking the signal cable for a short-circuit to supply voltage

  1. Ignition off

  3. Disconnect the combined instrument panel
  4. Control module disconnected
  5. Ignition on. Connect a voltmeter between control module connector terminal #16 and ground.

The voltmeter should read approximately 0 V.

Checking the stop lamp switch

When the brake pedal is unaffected, the value should be OFF. When the brake pedal is depressed the value should be ON.

The connection is via the central electrical module. The input signal is via terminal #B1:3. The output signal is via terminal #B1:4 to the DSA control module.

Information concerning B4184S and B4204S

From and including May 1997 there is only one replacement part engine control module (ECM) for each type of engine. These engine control modules (ECM) applies to both cars without, and for earlier cars, cars with pulsed secondary air injection system (PAIR) pump.

The engine control module (ECM) no longer controls the secondary air injection system (PAIR) pump when it is fitted to cars with manual transmission and pulsed secondary air injection system (PAIR) pump.

These cars however still meet the statutory requirement for emission levels.

  1. Remove the side panels from center console.
  2. Drill out the security screws to the right of the bracket with screwdriver (P/N 998 5477). NOTE: Ensure that no swarf falls onto the carpet.
  3. Pull out the right-hand side of the bracket.
  4. Remove the engine control module (ECM) from its clamp and disconnect the connector.

Before replacing the engine control module with a new one, the Verlog code of the old module has to be erased. The code is erased through VIDA which is used for communication with the immobilizer system through VCT 2000. If the code is not erased, the control module cannot be checked if it is returned due to a warranty claim, or if it is to be moved to another car. This is caused by the module having learnt the Verlog code generated by the immobilizer system of the car in which the module has been placed. When that has been done, the engine control module can only work together with that specific immobilizer system, as long as the Verlog code in the module is not erased.

Note. The Verlog-code can only be erased using the particular immobilizer- control module whose Verlog-code the engine control module (ECM) has learned.

Erase the Verlog code in the engine control module through VIDA vehicle communication (requires Volvo scan tool) . The PIN code is supplied by Volvo's central vehicle register. PIN codes are ordered in the same way as mechanical key codes.

Note. Keep the ignition switched off after erasure until the engine control module (ECM)) has been removed from the car. Otherwise the engine control module (ECM) will relearn the Verlog code.

Reinstall

  1. Reinstall bracket and press together.
  2. Install a new security screw.
  3. Tighten the security screw until the screw head breaks off.

Replacing the engine control module (ECM)

Before replacing the engine control module (ECM)

Before the engine control module is replaced, the VIN code in the old engine control module must be deleted.

The code is deleted using VIDA vehicle communication system Immobilizer Group 3(36) S40/V40. If the code is not deleted, the old engine control module cannot be tested if it has been returned as part of a warranty claim. In addition, it cannot be used in another car.

This is because the engine control module has learned a unique VIN code from the immobilizer system in the car in which it was originally installed.

Once the VIN code from the immobilizer system is programmed, the engine control module can only be used with that specific immobilizer module until the VIN code in the engine control module is deleted.

Note. VIN code deletion is only possible together with the immobilizer module whose VIN code is programmed in the engine control module.

Delete the VIN code in the engine control module . The PIN code required for this measure can only be obtained from the Volvo central vehicle register. Use the same routine as when ordering a mechanical key code.

Note. Always check that deletion was successful. This is done by reading out the parameter VIN PROGRAMMED . If deletion was successful, the parameter indicates NO. Do as follows Engine management system EMS 2000 Turn off the ignition for 30 seconds and then turn it back on (if the electric cooling fan is running, wait until it has stopped and then wait an additional 30 seconds). Then read out the parameter VIN PROGRAMMED. When the parameter indicates NO, turn off the ignition and disconnect the engine control module. Do not start the engine as this will cause the engine control module to relearn the VIN code.

HINT: The spare part control module is unprogrammed (virgin mode). If the right PIN codes are not programmed, the MIL lamp will illuminate.

Removing the control module

As part of the anti-theft protection on cars with electronic immobilizer, the control module box is locked with a lock strap. A shear screw is used to install the lock strap.

  1. Mark the center of the shear screw and drill a hole of a suitable diameter for a screw puller.
  2. Fit the screw puller and remove the screw.

As part of the anti-theft protection on cars with electronic immobilizer, the control module box is locked with a lock strap. A shear screw is used to install the lock strap.
