  1. Reconnect the connectors, reinstall components etc.
  2. Connect VCT2000
  3. Ignition on. Activate the air conditioning (A/C) condenser fan using VCT2000 according to «Activating components/functions»(ref-461610-S42689319562012040200000) .

Does the air conditioning (A/C) condenser fan relay click when it is activated?

  1. YES OKAY: Troubleshooting has been completed.
  2. NO Refer to «Information»(ref-441352-S07065886492011121500000)

The fault should have been detected and remedied. As this is not the case fault-tracing has failed.

Checking the power supply

  1. Ignition off
  2. Disconnect air conditioning (A/C) condenser fan relay 2/13
  3. Ignition on. Connect a voltmeter between air conditioning (A/C) condenser fan relay base terminal #1 and ground.

The voltmeter should read battery voltage.

Checking the signal cable

  1. Ignition off. Connect an ohmmeter between air conditioning (A/C) condenser fan relay base terminal #2 and ground.

The ohmmeter should read infinite resistance.

  1. OK Refer to «Checking the air conditioning (A/C) condenser fan relay»(ref-441352-S12296135542011121500000)
  2. NOT OK Refer to «Checking the signal cable»(ref-441352-S02725020582011121500000)

Checking the air conditioning (A/C) condenser fan relay

Connect an ohmmeter between the air conditioning (A/C) condenser fan relay terminals #1 and #2 (relay side).

The ohmmeter should read approximately 105 ohms at +20 °C.

  2. NOT OK Refer to «Defective air conditioning (A/C) condenser fan relay»(ref-441352-S09772770522011121500000)
  1. Ignition off. Check the cable between air conditioning (A/C) condenser fan relay base terminal #2 and engine control module (ECM) connector terminal #69 for an open-circuit according to «Open-circuit, permanent faults»(ref-441291-S38831997352011121500000) . Remedy as necessary.

Try a new air conditioning (A/C) condenser fan relay.

Check the cable between air conditioning (A/C) condenser fan relay base terminal #2 and the engine control module (ECM) connector terminal #69 for a short-circuit to ground according to Short-circuit to ground, permanent faults .

  1. Reconnect the connectors, reinstall components etc.

Does the air conditioning (A/C) condenser fan start?

  1. YES OKAY: Troubleshooting has been completed.

Checking the fuse

Checking cables

Check that the resistance between relay terminals 1 and 2 is approximately 75 ohms at +20 °C.

Check the signal cable between engine control module (ECM) #38 (half speed), #8 (full speed), #69 (air conditioning (A/C) cooling fan) and relay terminal 2 for an intermittent short-circuit to ground and remedy according to Short-circuit to ground, intermittent faults and for an intermittent open-circuit according to Open-circuit, intermittent faults .

  1. Idle air control (IAC) valve connector disconnected. Connect an ohmmeter between idle air control (IAC) valve connector terminals #1 and #2.

The ohmmeter should read 9-11 ohms.

  1. Ignition on. Connect a voltmeter between the idle air control (IAC) valve connector terminal #1 (engine control module (ECM) side) and ground.

The voltmeter should read battery voltage for 2 seconds immediately after the ignition is switched on.

Check the cable between idle air control (IAC) valve connector terminal #2 and engine control module (ECM) connector terminal #64 for an open-circuit according to Open-circuit, permanent faults .

Remedy as necessary.

Defective idle air control (IAC) valve

Try a new idle air control (IAC) valve according to Replacing the idle air control (IAC) valve .

Check the cable between idle air control (IAC) valve connector terminal #1 and system relay 2/14 terminal #3 for an open-circuit according to Open-circuit, permanent faults .

Remedy as necessary.

Before replacing engine control module (ECM)

Before the engine control module is replaced, the VIN code in the old engine control module must be deleted.

The code is deleted using VIDA vehicle communication system Immobilizer Group 3(36) S40/V40. If the code is not deleted, the old engine control module cannot be tested if it has been returned as part of a warranty claim. In addition, it cannot be used in another car.

This is because the engine control module has learned a unique VIN code from the immobilizer system in the car in which it was originally installed.

Once the VIN code from the immobilizer system is programmed, the engine control module can only be used with that specific immobilizer module until the VIN code in the engine control module is deleted.

Note. VIN code deletion is only possible together with the immobilizer module whose VIN code is programmed in the engine control module.

Delete the VIN code in the engine control module as per the system Immobilizer Group 3(36) S40/V40. The PIN code required for this measure can only be obtained from the Volvo central vehicle register. Use the same routine as when ordering a mechanical key code.

Note. Always check that deletion was successful. This is done by reading out the parameter VIN PROGRAMMED in VIDA vehicle communication EMS 2000 Group 2(23,28) S40/V40. If deletion was successful, the parameter indicates NO. Do as follows Engine management system EMS 2000 Turn off the ignition for 30 seconds and then turn it back on (if the electric cooling fan is running, wait until it has stopped and then wait an additional 30 seconds). Then read out the parameter VIN PROGRAMMED. When the parameter indicates NO, turn off the ignition and disconnect the engine control module. Do not start the engine as this will cause the engine control module to relearn the VIN code.

HINT: The spare part control module is unprogrammed (virgin mode). If the right PIN codes are not programmed, the MIL lamp will illuminate.

As part of the anti-theft protection on cars with electronic immobilizer, the control module box is locked with a lock strap. A shear screw is used to install the lock strap.

  1. Mark the center of the shear screw and drill a hole of a suitable diameter for a screw puller.
  2. Fit the screw puller and remove the screw.
