Initiation of the Upper Electronic Module (UEM)

Initiate the central locking system, interior lighting and sunroof by unlocking the car with the remote control, key or VIDA vehicle communication.

Windows

Initiate window positions. See: VIDA Car communication, Initiating the window position.

Calibrating the passenger compartment fan.

1. If the car is equipped with Manual Climate Control (MCC) or Standard climate control system, fan speed must be recalibrated if the battery has been disconnected. Ignition on. Turn the fan control to max. Turn the fan control to min. The calibration is complete.

Calibrating the sunroof

Downloading software and replacing the control module

New software can be downloaded into the central electronic module (CEM). When ordering software, the hardware and the software in the car is compared to the information in the Volvo central database. If the comparison is OK the software is downloaded to the control module. The PINs for the existing remote controls are downloaded at the same time.

If the comparison between the car and Volvo central database is not OK, the database is updated with the car configuration. When this is complete the software is downloaded.

When installing a completely new central electronic module (CEM) in the vehicle, the PIN codes are downloaded into the control module (when downloading software) for the following

1. central electronic module (CEM)
2. immobilizer
3. transponder (key).

The PIN codes are loaded automatically during the ordering process in VIDA. The PIN codes are retrieved from the Volvo Central Database and sent with the software package when software is ordered for the new control module.

The central electronic module (CEM) is to the left of the steering column under the dashboard. The entire control module is removed from the car during replacement.

Because of the unique PIN codes, the central electronic module (CEM) cannot be moved between cars.

Five customer parameters (six for 5 door cars) can be programmed into the central electronic module (CEM). These customer parameters are stored in the control module but not in the Volvo central database. This means that the customer parameters must be reprogrammed when hardware is replaced.

The customer parameters which can be programmed are

1. Approach lights. The approach lights can be programmed to stay on for a longer or shorter time according to the wishes of the customer. The factory setting is 30 seconds. The time can be set to 0, 30, 60 or 90 seconds The tailgate wiper can only be activated manually The tailgate wiper can be activated automatically when back-up (reverse) gear is selected and the front wipers are activated.
2. Security lighting. The security lighting can be programmed to stay on for a longer or shorter time according to the wishes of the customer. The factory setting is 30 seconds. The time can be set to 0, 30, 60 or 90 seconds The tailgate wiper can only be activated manually The tailgate wiper can be activated automatically when back-up (reverse) gear is selected and the front wipers are activated.
3. Automatic locking. If this function is activated, the side doors lock when the speed exceeds 7 km/h (5 mph). Selectable values: On / off The tailgate wiper can only be activated manually The tailgate wiper can be activated automatically when back-up (reverse) gear is selected and the front wipers are activated.
4. Locking acknowledgment via the turn signal lamps. If this function is activated, the turn signal lamps flash when the car is locked and unlocked. Selectable values: On / Off The tailgate wiper can only be activated manually The tailgate wiper can be activated automatically when back-up (reverse) gear is selected and the front wipers are activated.
5. Tailgate wiper (certain models). The tailgate wiper function can be programmed in two ways: The tailgate wiper can only be activated manually The tailgate wiper can be activated automatically when back-up (reverse) gear is selected and the front wipers are activated.

2. the control module by inserting a screwdriver up between the bracket and the control module. Twist the screwdriver so that the bracket opens out. At the same time, pull the control module out of the bracket towards the underside of the dashboard
3. the control module from the bracket and pull downwards under the dashboard.

Remove the fuses from the central electronic module (CEM).

Install

1. the control module on the bracket. Press the control module forward so that the catches enter the bracket
2. the connectors
3. the soundproofing panel on the driver's side
4. the 2 screws on top of the control module
5. the 2 connectors on top of the control module.

Note. Make sure that the rubber seal is correctly positioned in the groove.

Install

1. the cover
2. the wiper arm mechanism. See: «Wiper mechanism and wiper motor, windshield, replacing»(ref-438274-S42497984372011120100000)
3. the battery negative cable. See: «Battery, disconnecting»(ref-438278-S34403393232011120100000) .

Ordering software

Programming data

Program in the data read off from the old control module (customer-programmed data for example). This is performed via VIDA vehicle communication.

Reset the service reminder indicator (SRI). Otherwise the lamp will receive incorrect reference data. (Global time is reset when the central electronic module (CEM) is replaced.) Reset the service reminder indicator (SRI). See: Resetting the service reminder indicator (SRI) .

Check that the CAN-communication is functioning. This is done by reading off the control module ID for the central electronic module (CEM), rear electronic module (REM) and engine control module (ECM) via VIDA vehicle communication.

2. the control module by inserting a screwdriver up between the bracket and the relay box. Turn the screwdriver so that the bracket opens out. At the same time, pull the relay box out of the bracket towards the underside of the dashboard
3. the control module from the bracket and pull downwards under the dashboard.

Remove the fuses from the central electronic module (CEM).
