Removal
- Park the car on a level surface. Do not apply the parking brake. Remove the air cleaner housing. Remove the battery and the battery shelf.
- Remove the gearshift cable from the bracket and from the lever at the transaxle. Disconnect the catch at the lever. Remove the cable from the bracket. (Scheme 2)
- Remove the center console. Switch off ignition. Disconnect the battery negative lead. Remove covers and panels. (Scheme 3) Grasp both the boot and the panel. Pull it straight out to the left so that the catches release. Remover the cover in the center console locker.
- Remove screws and switches. Remove the screws. Separate the two connectors on the bracket. (Scheme 4)
- Remove the center console. Shift the gear selector to "D" position. Apply the parking brake. Pull up the rear edge of the center console. Pull it backward out of the dashboard. Lift out the center console.
- Remove the cable from the gear selector assembly. Remove the shaft from the cable and the lever using round nose pliers. (Scheme 1) Pull the shaft straight out. Remove the cable from the gear selector assembly.
- Remove the transaxle cable. Fold the carpet down. Remove the side panel. Remove the screws for the cable grommet in the cowl-panel. Remove the ignition switch interlock cable from the transaxle cable. (Scheme 5)

Installation
Note. Take care not to damage the cable or sleeve by bending it excessively. Take care not to damage the cable boot.
- Install the gearshift cable. Route the cable correctly in the engine compartment with someone to assist you. Align the cable in the gear selector assembly. Install the cable grommet in the cowl panel. Install the ignition switch interlock cable on the transaxle cable. (Scheme 5) Install the side panel. Fold the carpet back.
- Install the cable on the gear selector assembly. Install the cable sleeve in the gear selector assembly. Install the cable on gear lever arm with the shaft. (Scheme 1)
- Install the center console. Shift the gear selector to "D" position. Ensure that the parking brake is applied. Install the center console. Ensure that both the holders on the inside of the center console engage in the side panels on the dashboard. (Scheme 6) Install and tighten the screws. Connect the connectors. (Scheme 4)
- Install the panel (the boot for the parking brake lever). Press the panel into the center console. Install the cover. (Scheme 3)
- Install the transaxle cable on the transaxle. Move the gear selector to "P" position. see scheme 2 Turn the lever on the transaxle to "P" position (the foremost position). Check that Park is engaged. Attempt to roll the car. Detach the lock tab on the cable. Pull it straight up slightly. see scheme 3 Use flat nosed pliers. Install the cable in the bracket and on the lever on the transaxle. Fold the lock down. Press the locking tab into place on the cable. Check the gear positions.
- Install the air cleaner housing. Install the battery shelf and the battery. Connect the wiring.

Replacement
- Removing engine compartment components. Ensure ignition is off. Remove the air cleaner housing assembly with the intake pipe. (Scheme 7) Pull the air cleaner housing out of its mountings.
- Removing the gear selector cable. Remove the screws from the bracket for the gear selector cable. see scheme 4 Remove the cable from the lever. Move the cable to one side.
- Remove the PNP sensor from the gearshift shaft. Remove the lever. see scheme 6 Remove the nut, lock washer and rubber seal from the PNP sensor. Remove the nut for the cable duct. Lift the cable duct to one side. Remove the two screws for the PNP sensor. Carefully lift the sensor off the gearshift shaft.
- Replace the sealing ring for the gear shift linkage rod. Remove the old sealing ring using a small rounded off screwdriver. (Scheme 8) Take care not to damage the rod. Apply A/T fluid on the new sealing ring. Install the ring using appropriate seal installer.
- Install the PNP sensor. Tighten the sensor screws lightly. Install the rubber washer, lock washer and the nut on the gear shift linkage rod connection. Tighten the nut. Lock the nut with the lock washer.
- Adjust the PNP sensor. See «PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SENSOR»(ref-155772-S42744447612003051200000) under ADJUSTMENTS.
- Install the cable duct on the stud on the PNP sensor. Tighten the nut to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-155772-S26450979342003062700000). Install the lever on the gearshift shaft. Install the transaxle cable on the lever on the bracket for the cable on the transaxle.
- Install the air cleaner housing, including all hoses and electrical terminals.
- Checking diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) Check and erase any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). (Scheme 7)
