Cold Transaxle
Transaxle fluid temperature should be approximately 105°F (40°C). This is the normal temperature for a transaxle that has been idling for about 10 minutes. Check fluid level on COLD side of the dipstick. Fluid level should be MINIMUM and MAXIMUM ridges. If fluid temperature is colder than specification, fluid level may be lower on the dipstick.
Warm Transaxle
Transaxle fluid temperature should be approximately 169°F (80°C). This is the normal temperature for a transaxle that has been driven for about 30 minutes. Check fluid level on HOT side of the dipstick. Fluid level should be MINIMUM and MAXIMUM ridges. If fluid temperature is above approximately 190°F (90°C), fluid level may be above the MAXIMUM ridge on the dipstick.
Checking Procedure
Park vehicle on level surface with engine at idle. Move gear selector through all gear positions. End in "P" position. Allow engine to idle in Park for 3 minutes. Check fluid level on dipstick. (Scheme 9) Ensure fluid level is correct for transaxle temperature. If needed, add additional fluid through dipstick tube. The space the MINIMUM and MAXIMUM ridges corresponds to about.5 qt. (.5L). DO NOT overfill transaxle.

ON-VEHICLE REPAIRS
Note. Various components may be serviced without transaxle/transmission removal. For servicing of these components, see appropriate component under ADJUSTMENTS and/or REMOVAL & INSTALLATION . For additional information on testing electrical components, see appropriate DIAGNOSIS article.
GEARSHIFT CABLE
- Park the car on a level surface. Do not apply the parking brake. Remove the inlet pipe for the air cleaner. Move the gear selector to "D" position. Pull up the locking tab at the cable adjuster slightly using flat nosed pliers.
- Move the gear selector to "P" position. (Scheme 10) Turn the lever on the transaxle to "P" position (most forward position). Check that "P" position is engaged. Attempt to roll the car.
- Press the locking tab into place on the cable adjuster. (Scheme 11) Check the gear positions. Install the air intake pipe on the air cleaner.

- Ensure ignition is off. Remove the following engine compartment components: Air cleaner housing and the intake pipe. Battery. Battery shelf.
- Remove the transaxle cable. Remove the screws from the bracket for the gearshift cable. (Scheme 12) Remove the cable from the lever. Move the cable to one side. NOTE: The tool must be positioned down to the "Z" edge, below the threads. Press the tool down towards the flat surfaces below the thread on the shaft.
- Check the setting. Remove the lever. Install adjustment tool (999 5475) on the gearshift linkage rod. (Scheme 13) Check that the shaft is in the "N" position. The groove on the tool must align with the marking on the Park/Neutral Position (PNP) sensor. If adjustment is required, go to next step.
- Remove the nut for the cable duct. Lift the cable duct away from the screw. Slacken off the screws for the PNP sensor. Rotate the PNP sensor so that the mark on the switch aligns with the groove on the tool. Tighten the screws for the sensor. Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-155772-S26450979342003062700000). Remove the adjustment tool.
- Install the cable duct. Install the cable duct on the screw. Install the lever on the control shaft. (Scheme 14)
- Install the gear selector cable. Install the cable on the lever. Install the screws for the bracket.
- Install the battery shelf. Install the air cleaner housing and the intake manifold. Install the battery.
- Check for and erase any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC). See appropriate DIAGNOSIS article.
