ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION
- INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Start the engine and turn the Techstream on. Warm up the engine. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the VVT System (Bank 1). Check the engine speed while operating the Oil Control Valve (OCV) using the Techstream. Standard Condition Tester Operation Specified Condition OCV is OFF Normal engine speed OCV is ON Soon after OCV switched from OFF to ON, engine idles roughly or stalls If the operation is not as specified, check the oil control valve, wire harness and ECM.

- REMOVE NO. 1 ENGINE COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY See step 2
- REMOVE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (for Exhaust Side) Disconnect the oil control valve connector. Remove the bolt and oil control valve. Remove the O-ring from the oil control valve.
- REMOVE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (for Intake Side) Disconnect the oil control valve connector. Remove the bolt and oil control valve. Remove the O-ring from the oil control valve.

- INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below. Standard Resistance Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition 1 - 2 20°C (68°F) 6.9 to 7.9 ohms If the result is not as specified, replace the oil control valve assembly. Connect the battery positive (+) lead to terminal 1 and negative (-) lead to terminal 2, and check the movement of the valve. OK Condition Specified Condition Battery positive (+) voltage is applied Valve moves in left arrow direction shown in illustration Battery positive (+) voltage is cut off Valve moves in right arrow direction shown in illustration If the result is not as specified, replace the oil control valve assembly. If the valve cannot return properly because of foreign matter, a small pressure leak in the advanced direction may occur and a DTC may be stored.

- INSTALL CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (for Exhaust Side) Apply a light coat of engine oil to a new O-ring, and install it to the oil control valve. Install the oil control valve with the bolt. Torque: 10 N*m (102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf) NOTE: Do not allow foreign matter to contact the oil seal face of the oil control valve (connecting surface with cylinder head cover). Be careful that the O-ring is not cracked or moved out of place when installing the oil control valve. Connect the oil control valve connector.
- INSTALL CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (for Intake Side) Apply a light coat of engine oil to a new O-ring, and install it to the oil control valve. Install the oil control valve with the bolt. Torque: 10 N*m (102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf) NOTE: Do not allow foreign matter to contact the oil seal face of the oil control valve (connecting surface with cylinder head cover). Be careful that the O-ring is not cracked or moved out of place when installing the oil control valve. Connect the oil control valve connector.
- INSPECT FOR OIL LEAK .Refer to «REPLACEMENT - Step 5»(ref-493458-S08097122522012081000000)

- CHECK THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY Check the throttle control motor operating sounds. Turn the ignition switch to ON. When pressing the accelerator pedal, check the operating sound of the running motor. Make sure that no friction noises are emitted from the motor. If friction noise exists, replace the throttle body. Check the throttle position sensor. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to ON. Turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / All Data / Throttle Sensor Position. Depress the accelerator pedal. When the throttle valve is fully opened, check that the value of "Throttle Sensor Position" is within the specification. Standard throttle valve opening percentage 60% or more NOTE: When checking the standard throttle valve opening percentage, make sure the shift lever is in N. If the percentage is less than 60%, replace the throttle body assembly.

- DRAIN ENGINE COOLANT .Refer to «REPLACEMENT - Step 2»(ref-493447-S27817726442012081000000)
- REMOVE NO. 1 ENGINE COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY Lift the rear of the engine cover to detach the cover from the 2 pins, and then lift the front of the engine cover to detach the cover from the pin and remove the engine cover.
- REMOVE AIR CLEANER CAP SUB-ASSEMBLY See step 3
- REMOVE THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY Disconnect the water by-pass hose from the throttle body. Disconnect the No. 2 water by-pass hose from the throttle body. Disconnect the fuel tube from the clamp. Disconnect the throttle position sensor and control motor connector. Remove the 4 bolts and the throttle body with fuel tube bracket. Remove the bolt and fuel tube bracket. Remove the gasket from the intake manifold.

- INSPECT THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY Check that the throttle valve opens and closes smoothly. Check that the there is no sludge accumulating around the throttle body. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below. Standard Resistance Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition 1 (M-) - 2 (M+) 20°C (68°F) 0.3 to 100 ohms If the result is not as specified, replace the throttle body assembly.
- INSPECT ACCELERATOR PEDAL SENSOR ASSEMBLY Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to ON. Turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / ETCS / Accel Sensor Out No. 1 and Accel Sensor Out No. 2. Read the value displayed on the Techstream. Standard Voltage Accel Sensor Out No. 1 Condition Specified Condition Accelerator pedal is released 0.5 to 1.1 V Accelerator pedal is depressed 2.6 to 4.5 V Standard Voltage Accel Sensor Out No. 2 Condition Specified Condition Accelerator pedal is released 1.2 to 2.0 V Accelerator pedal is depressed 3.4 to 5.0 V If the result is not as specified, check the accelerator pedal sensor assembly, wire harness and ECM.

- REMOVE ACCELERATOR PEDAL SENSOR ASSEMBLY Disconnect the accelerator pedal sensor connector. Remove the 2 bolts and accelerator pedal sensor.
Note. Perform the MAF meter inspection according to the procedures below. Only replace the MAF meter when the MAF value in the Data List (with the engine stopped) is not within the normal operating range or there is foreign matter on the MAF meter platinum hot wire (heater).
- INSPECT MASS AIR FLOW METER SUB-ASSEMBLY Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to ON (do not run the engine). Turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / All Data / MAF. Wait 30 seconds, and read the values on the Techstream. Standard Item Condition Specified Condition MAF Engine not running 30 seconds after turning ignition switch to ON Less than 0.45 g/sec. If the result is not as specified, replace the mass air flow meter sub-assembly. If the result is as specified, inspect the mass air flow meter sub-assembly.Refer to «INSPECTION»(ref-493433-S08396882632012081000000) .

- REMOVE MASS AIR FLOW METER SUB-ASSEMBLY Disconnect the mass air flow meter connector. Remove the 2 screws and mass air flow meter.

- INSPECT MASS AIR FLOW METER SUB-ASSEMBLY Perform a visual check for any foreign matter on the platinum hot wire (heater) of the mass air flow meter shown in the illustration. OK There is no foreign material. Check the intake air temperature sensor (built into the mass air flow meter). Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below. Standard Resistance Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition 1 (THA) - 2 (E2) -20°C (-4°F) 13.6 to 18.4 kohms 1 (THA) - 2 (E2) 20°C (68°F) 2.21 to 2.69 kohms 1 (THA) - 2 (E2) 60°C (140°F) 0.49 to 0.67 kohms If the result is not as specified, replace the mass air flow meter sub-assembly.
Note. The EFI MAIN and A/F relays are built into the integration relay. Some relays are built into the integration relay. The integration relay cannot be disassembled. If there is a malfunction in the circuit of the integration relay, replace the integration relay.

- REMOVE INTEGRATION NO. 1 RELAY Remove the engine room No. 1 relay block cover. Using a screwdriver, detach the 2 claws and disconnect the integration relay from the engine room No. 1 relay block. HINT: Tape the screwdriver tip before use. Disconnect the 3 connectors from the integration relay.
- INSPECT INTEGRATION NO. 1 RELAY (EFI MAIN RELAY) Measure the resistance of the EFI MAIN fuse. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below. Standard Resistance Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition EFI MAIN fuse Always Below 1 ohms If the result is not as specified, replace the EFI MAIN fuse. Measure the resistance of the EFI MAIN relay circuit. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below. Standard Resistance Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition 1C-1 - 1A-4 Battery voltage is not applied to terminals 1A-3 and 1A-2 10 kohms or higher 1C-1 - 1A-4 Battery voltage is applied to terminals 1A-3 and 1A-2 Below 1 ohms If the result is not as specified, replace the integration relay.
- INSPECT INTEGRATION NO. 1 RELAY (A/F RELAY) Measure the resistance of the A/F fuse. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below. Standard Resistance Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition A/F fuse Always Below 1 ohms If the result is not as specified, replace the A/F fuse. Measure the resistance of the A/F relay circuit. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below. Standard Resistance Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition 1C-1 - 1B-8 Battery voltage is not applied to terminals 1B-7 and 1B-6 10 kohms or higher 1C-1 - 1B-8 Battery voltage is applied to terminals 1B-7 and 1B-6 Below 1 ohms If the result is not as specified, replace the integration relay.

- INSPECT IG1 RELAY Remove the IG1 relay from the instrument panel junction block. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below. Standard Resistance Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition 3 - 5 Battery voltage is not applied to terminals 1 and 2 10 kohms or higher 3 - 5 Battery voltage is applied to terminals 1 and 2 Below 1 ohms If the result is not as specified, replace the IG1 relay. Install the IG1 relay to the instrument panel junction block.

- INSPECT IG2 RELAY Remove the IG2 relay from the engine room No. 1 relay block. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below. Standard Resistance Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition 3 - 5 Battery voltage is not applied to terminals 1 and 2 10 kohms or higher 3 - 5 Battery voltage is applied to terminals 1 and 2 Below 1 ohms If the result is not as specified, replace the IG2 relay. Install the IG2 relay to the engine room No. 1 relay block.

- INSPECT INSTRUMENT PANEL JUNCTION BLOCK (C/OPN RELAY) NOTE: The circuit opening relay is built into the instrument panel junction block. Measure the resistance of the circuit opening relay circuit. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
