INSPECTION PROCEDURE

HINT

  1. Read freeze frame data using the Techstream. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can be helpful in determining whether the vehicle was moving or stationary, whether the engine was warmed up or not, whether the air-fuel ratio was lean or rich, as well as other data recorded at the time of a malfunction.
  2. If no problem is found through this diagnostic troubleshooting procedure, there may be a mechanical problem with the engine.

CONDITIONING FOR SENSOR TESTING

HINT

Perform the operation with the engine speeds and time durations described below prior to checking the waveforms of the Air Fuel Ratio (A/F) sensor and Heated Oxygen (HO2) sensor. This is to activate the sensors sufficiently to obtain the appropriate inspection results.

Scheme 347

Scheme 347: CONDITIONING FOR SENSOR TESTING
  1. (a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
  2. (b) Start the engine and warm it up with all the accessories switched OFF until the engine coolant temperature stabilizes.
  3. (c) Run the engine at an engine speed of between 2500 rpm and 3000 rpm for at least 3 minutes.
  4. (d) While running the engine at 3000 rpm for 2 seconds and 2000 rpm for 2 seconds, check the waveforms of the A/F and HO2 sensors using the Techstream.

HINT

  1. If either voltage output of the Air Fuel Ratio (A/F) or Heated Oxygen (HO2) sensor does not fluctuate, or there is noise in the waveform of either sensor, the sensor may be malfunctioning.
  2. If the voltage outputs of both the sensors remain lean or rich, the air-fuel ratio may be extremely lean or rich. In such cases, enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the Injection Volume for A/F sensor.
  3. If the Three-Way Catalytic Converter (TWC) has deteriorated, the HO2 sensor (located behind the TWC) voltage output fluctuates up and down frequently, even under normal driving conditions (active air-fuel ratio control is not performed).

Scheme 348

Scheme 348

HINT

Malfunctioning areas can be identified by performing the Control the Injection Volume for A/F sensor function provided in the Active Test. The Control the Injection Volume for A/F sensor function can help to determine whether the Air Fuel Ratio (A/F) sensor, Heated Oxygen (HO2) sensor and other potential trouble areas are malfunctioning.

The following instructions describe how to conduct the Control the Injection Volume for A/F sensor operation using the Techstream.

  1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
  2. Start the engine.
  3. Turn the Techstream on.
  4. Warm up the engine at an engine speed of 2500 rpm for approximately 90 seconds.
  5. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the Injection Volume for A/F sensor.
  6. Perform the Active Test operation with the engine idling (press the RIGHT or LEFT button to change the fuel injection volume.)
  7. Monitor the output voltages of the A/F and HO2 sensors (AFS Voltage B1S1 and O2S B1S2) displayed on the Techstream.

HINT

  1. The Control the Injection Volume for A/F sensor operation lowers the fuel injection volume by 12.5% or increases the injection volume by 25%.
  2. Each sensor reacts in accordance with increases and decreases in the fuel injection volume.

O2S B1S2 (HO2)+25%RichHigher than 0.55 V

Note. The Air Fuel Ratio (A/F) sensor has an output delay of a few seconds and the Heated Oxygen (HO2) sensor has a maximum output delay of approximately 20 seconds.

HINT

  1. If a malfunction cannot be found when troubleshooting DTC P0420, a lean or rich abnormality may be the cause. Perform troubleshooting by following the inspection procedure for P0171 (System Too Lean) and P0172 (System Too Rich).
  2. Read freeze frame data using the Techstream. Freeze frame data records the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air-fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.
  3. Sensor 1 refers to the sensor closest to the engine assembly.
  4. Sensor 2 refers to the sensor farthest away from the engine assembly.

Note. Inspect the fuses for circuits related to this system before performing the following inspection procedure.

HINT

  1. In contrast to normal malfunction diagnosis for components, circuits and systems, DTCs P1603 and P1605 are used to determine the malfunctioning area from the problem symptoms and freeze frame data when the user mentions problems such as engine stall. As these DTCs can be stored as a result of certain user actions, even if these DTCs are output, if the customer makes no mention of problems, clear these DTCs without performing any troubleshooting and return the vehicle to the customer.
  2. If any other DTCs are output, perform troubleshooting for those DTCs first.
  3. Use any information from the customer problem analysis about the condition of the vehicle at the time when the problem occurred (how the engine stopped, conditions when the engine was restarted, etc.) as a reference. Symptom Suspected Area Engine vibration occurs and engine stops Air fuel ratio abnormal Engine stops with no engine vibration Ignition system, injection stoppage, high load from external parts Engine can be started with accelerator pedal depressed Insufficient air volume Rough idling after engine started Air fuel ratio abnormal, abnormal combustion
  4. Read freeze frame data using the Techstream. Freeze frame data records engine conditions when a malfunction occurs. This information can be useful when troubleshooting.
  5. When confirming the freeze frame data, be sure to check all 5 sets of freeze frame data.Refer to «FREEZE FRAME DATA»(ref-493432-S08719650372012081000000) .
  6. When DTC P1603 (Engine Stall History) is stored, DTC P1605 (Rough Idling) is also stored. When confirming freeze frame data, check DTC P1605. (The ECM stores DTC P1605 first. Therefore, the 5 sets of freeze frame data can be confirmed through DTC P1605, enabling the technician to obtain more information.)
  7. When confirming freeze frame data, if there are multiple items related to the cause of the malfunction, perform troubleshooting for all related items.
  8. Try to operate the vehicle under the conditions recorded in the freeze frame data which were present when the malfunction occurred. Confirm the data at this time and the data when the engine is idling (engine warmed up, no load, and shift lever in D or N) and compare these data with the freeze frame data.
  9. Inspections take into account the fact that the malfunction may not have reoccurred and place emphasis on checking the vehicle conditions present at the time when the malfunction occurred.
  10. When performing inspections, jiggle the relevant wire harnesses and connectors in an attempt to reproduce malfunctions that do not always occur.

Inspection flow

Using freeze frame data, narrow down the parts to be inspected according to the vehicle conditions at the time when the malfunction occurred.

  1. If the engine stalled when the intake air volume was low (during idling or deceleration), there may be a decrease in torque due to an incorrect air fuel ratio, etc.
  2. If the engine stalled when the intake air volume was high (during driving or acceleration), there may be a major malfunction such as continuous misfire due to ignition stoppage, fuel injection stoppage, etc. and the torque drops to zero.

2

  1. If the engine speed decreased slowly, there may have been a decrease in torque due to an air fuel ratio that was incorrect (by approximately 20 to 30%), etc.
  2. If the engine speed decreased rapidly, there may have been a malfunction such as when the engine misfires almost continuously due to ignition stoppage, fuel injection stoppage, etc., or when the external load increases due to an external part malfunctioning.

3

  1. If the air fuel ratio was abnormal, there may have been an intake air leak, sensor malfunction, or fuel supply problem.
