Turn ignition on. Ensure wipers are off and movement has stopped. Turn ignition off. Adjust wiper arm during installation to set blade in correct position. (Scheme 13)

On Forester, wiper parks to the right. On Impreza, wiper parks to the left.

Turn ignition on. Ensure wipers are off and movement has stopped. Turn ignition off. Adjust wiper arm during installation so blade is even with bottom edge of rear window defogger grid.

COMPONENT TESTS

WARNINGDeactivate air bag system before performing any service operation. See AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article. DO NOT apply electrical power to any component on steering column without first deactivating air bag system. Air bag may deploy.

FRONT & REAR WASHER MOTOR

Disconnect washer motor harness connector. Apply positive battery voltage to terminal No. 2 and ground terminal No. 1 of washer motor connector. (Scheme 14) If motor does not operate, replace washer motor.

Forester

  1. Disconnect wiper motor connector. Connect positive battery voltage to terminal No. 2 and ground terminal No. 6 of wiper motor connector. (Scheme 15) If wiper operates at low speed, go to next step. If wiper does not operate or operates at a high speed, replace wiper motor.
  2. Connect positive battery voltage to terminal No. 3 and ground terminal No. 6 of wiper motor connector. (Scheme 15) If wiper operates at a faster speed than in previous step, go to next step. If wiper motor does not operate or operates at same speed as in previous step, replace wiper motor.
  3. Connect positive battery voltage to terminal No. 2 and ground terminal No. 6. After operating motor at low speed, disconnect positive battery voltage from terminal No. 2 to stop motor. Reconnect positive battery to terminal No. 4 and ground terminal No. 6. Connect a jumper wire between terminals No. 2 and 5. Motor should operate, then automatically stop. Replace motor as necessary.

Impreza

  1. Disconnect wiper motor connector. Connect positive battery voltage to terminal No. 2 and ground terminal No. 4 of wiper motor connector. (Scheme 16) If wiper operates at low speed, go to next step. If wiper does not operate or operates at a high speed, replace wiper motor.
  2. Connect positive battery voltage to terminal No. 3 and ground terminal No. 4 of wiper motor connector. (Scheme 16) If wiper operates at a faster speed than in previous step, go to next step. If wiper motor does not operate or operates at same speed as in previous step, replace wiper motor.
  3. Connect positive battery voltage to terminal No. 2 and ground terminal No. 4. After operating motor at low speed, disconnect positive battery voltage from terminal No. 2 to stop motor. Reconnect positive battery voltage to terminal No. 5 and ensure terminal No. 4 is connected to ground. Connect a jumper wire between terminals No. 1 and 2. Motor should operate, then automatically stop. Replace motor if operation is not as specified.
  1. Disconnect wiper motor connector. Connect positive battery voltage to terminal No. 2 and ground terminal No. 5 of wiper motor connector. (Scheme 16) If wiper operates at low speed, go to next step. If wiper does not operate or operates at a high speed, replace wiper motor.
  2. Connect positive battery voltage to terminal No. 3 and ground terminal No. 5 of wiper motor connector. (Scheme 16) If wiper operates at a faster speed than in previous step, go to next step. If wiper motor does not operate or operates at same speed as in previous step, replace wiper motor.
  3. Connect positive battery voltage to terminal No. 2 and ground terminal No. 5. After operating motor at low speed, disconnect positive battery voltage from terminal No. 2 to stop motor. Reconnect positive battery voltage to terminal No. 1 and ensure terminal No. 5 is connected to ground. Connect a jumper wire between terminals No. 2 and 4. Motor should operate, then automatically stop. Replace motor if operation is not as specified.

FRONT WIPER/WASHER SWITCH

  1. Remove instrument panel lower cover. Remove lower column cover. Unfasten hold-down clip securing harness.
  2. Disconnect combination switch harness connectors from body harness. Ensure continuity is present between terminals as indicated. (Scheme 17) Repair or replace as necessary.

REAR WIPER MOTOR

  1. Disconnect wiper motor connector. Connect positive battery voltage to terminal No. 2 and ground terminal No. 3 of wiper motor connector. (Scheme 18) If wiper motor operates, go to next step. If wiper motor does not operate, replace wiper motor.
  2. Connect positive battery voltage to terminal No. 2 and ground terminal No. 3 of wiper motor connector. Remove positive battery voltage and ground from motor. Ensure motor stops in middle of stroke. Go to next step.
  3. Connect positive battery voltage to terminal No. 1 and ground terminal No. 3 of wiper motor connector. Using a jumper wire, connect terminals No. 2 and 4. Motor should operate, then automatically stop. Replace motor if operation is not as specified.

  1. Remove rear wiper relay from behind right rear wheelwell. Check continuity between relay terminals No. 1 and 2. Also check continuity between terminals No. 3 and 4. Continuity should exist. Check continuity between relay terminals No. 3 and 5. Continuity should not exist. (Scheme 19) If continuity is as specified, go to next step. If continuity is not as specified, replace relay.
  2. Apply battery voltage to relay terminal No. 1 and ground terminal No. 2. Check continuity between terminals No. 3 and 5. If continuity exists, relay is okay. If continuity does not exist, replace relay.

Remove rear wiper relay from behind right rear wheelwell. Apply battery voltage to relay terminals No. 2 and 8. (Scheme 20) Wait until wiper arm stops after the second time. Measure voltage at terminals No. 2 and 6. If voltage is 12 volts when energized and zero volts for 7-11 seconds then returns to 12 volts, relay is okay. If voltage is not as specified, replace relay.

REAR WIPER/WASHER SWITCH

  1. Remove instrument panel lower cover. Remove lower column cover. Unfasten hold-down clip securing harness. Disconnect combination switch harness connectors from body harness.
  2. Check continuity between specified terminals. (Scheme 21) If continuity is not as specified, replace combination switch.
