DTC P1101 (N_SW): NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION (M/T) Subaru Forester SF

Testing & Diagnostics ~300 words
  1. Turn ignition on. Place transmission in neutral. Using voltmeter connected to ground, backprobe PCM connector terminal No. 82 (Green/Black wire). If voltage reading is not 4.5-5.5 volts, go to step 3). If voltage reading is 4.5-5.5 volts, leave voltmeter connected and go to next step.
  2. Move transmission shifter to any gear other than Park or Neutral. If voltage reading is more than one volt, go to next step. If voltage reading is one volt or less, check for poor terminal contact at PCM connector.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect neutral position switch connector. Check resistance of neutral position switch between terminals No. 1 and 2 of switch/harness assembly. If resistance is more than one megohm in neutral position and less than one ohm in all other positions, go to next step. If resistance is not within specifications, replace neutral position switch/harness assembly.
  4. Disconnect PCM connector. Check resistance of harness between PCM connector terminal No. 82 and neutral position switch connector terminal No. 1 (Green/Black wire). If resistance is one ohm or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than one ohm, repair open in wiring between PCM and neutral position switch connector.
  5. Check resistance between PCM connector terminal No. 82 (Green/Black wire) and ground. If resistance is 10 ohms or less, check for short to ground in wiring between PCM and neutral position switch connector. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, go to next step.
  6. Check resistance between neutral position switch connector terminal No. 2 (Black/Red wire) and ground. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, check for poor contact in switch connector. If connection is okay, replace PCM. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, check for open in wiring between neutral position switch and engine grounding terminal.
