DTC P0500 (VSP): VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR (LEGACY) (VSS) MALFUNCTION Subaru Forester SF

  1. Raise and support vehicle with wheels clear of ground. Start engine and place vehicle in gear. If speedometer operation is not normal, go to next step. If speedometer operation is normal, check PCM connector and circuit between PCM and vehicle speed sensor 2 (VSS). See appropriate wiring diagram in WIRING DIAGRAMS article in this section.
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect TCM connector. Start engine and place vehicle in gear. Using voltmeter connected to ground, backprobe PCM connector terminal No. 83. See appropriate wiring diagram in WIRING DIAGRAMS article in this section. If voltage reading changes from 0 to 5 volts, check for open in wiring between PCM and instrument cluster connector, poor contact in PCM connector or poor contact in instrument cluster connector. If voltage reading does not change from 0 to 5 volts, go to next step.
  3. Turn engine off. Disconnect PCM and VSS 2 connectors. Check resistance between PCM connector terminal No. 83 and VSS 2 terminal No. 1. If resistance is more than one ohm, repair open in harness between PCM and VSS 2. If resistance is one ohm or less, check resistance between PCM connector terminal No. 83 and ground. If resistance is 10 ohms or less, repair short in wiring between PCM and VSS 2 connector. If resistance is more than 10 ohms, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition on. Check voltage at VSS 2 connector terminal No. 3. If voltage reading is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage reading is 10 volts or less, repair power supply to VSS 2.
  5. Turn ignition off. Check resistance between VSS 2 connector terminal No. 2 and ground. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in wiring. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
  6. Remove VSS 2 from transmission. Reconnect PCM and VSS 2 connectors. Turn ignition on. Check voltage at PCM terminal No. 83 while turning VSS 2. If voltage reading changes from 0 to 5 volts, repair mechanical problem in transmission. If voltage reading does not change from 0 to 5 volts, replace VSS 2.
