ROAD TEST
- PROBLEM SYMPTOM CONFIRMATION Based on the result of the customer problem analysis, try to reproduce the symptoms. If the problem is that the transaxle does not shift up or down or the shift point is too high or too low, conduct the following road test referring to the automatic shift schedule and simulate the problem symptoms.
- ROAD TEST Perform a road test. WARNING: Check for safety before performing any tests. NOTE: Be sure to inspect and adjust the engine before performing these tests. Perform the road test with the engine coolant temperature between 60 to 100°C (140 and 212°F) and the ATF temperature is between 50 to 80°C (122 to 176°F). Perform these tests with the air conditioning off. Inspection Procedure Transmission Control Switch Test With the vehicle stationary and the shift lever in D, move the shift lever to S and return it to D. Check that the meter display changes from D to the appropriate S range and then back again. S Position Test With the vehicle stationary and the shift lever in S, move the shift lever to "+" and "-". Check that the meter display changes between S ranges properly. D Position Shift Test While driving the vehicle normally, check that the transaxle shifts up and down through each gear properly. Lock-up Function While driving on a level surface at a constant speed in the lock-up range (70 km/h (43 mph) or more) with the shift lever in D, lightly depress the accelerator pedal and check that the engine speed does not change abruptly. P Position Test Stop the vehicle on an incline (approximately 5° or more). Then move the shift lever to P and release the parking brake. Check that the parking lock pawl holds the vehicle in place. Abnormal Noise and Vibration Check for abnormal noise and vibration while driving the vehicle forward and backward, and during shift operations. Fluid Leakage After performing all other road test inspections, check for fluid leakage.

- DESCRIPTION When troubleshooting On-Board Diagnostic (OBD II) vehicles, the vehicle must be connected to the OBD II scan tool (complying with SAE J1987). Various data output from the vehicle's ECM can then be read. OBD II regulations require that the vehicle's on-board computer illuminates the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) on the instrument panel when the computer detects a malfunction in: The emission control system/components The powertrain control components (which affect vehicle emissions) The computer In addition, the applicable Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) prescribed by SAE J2012 are recorded in the ECM memory. When the malfunction does not reoccur, the MIL stays illuminated until the ignition switch is turned off, and the MIL turns OFF when the engine is started. However, the DTCs remain recorded in the ECM memory. To check DTCs, connect the Techstream to the Data Link Connector 3 (DLC3) of the vehicle. The Techstream displays DTCs, the freeze frame data and a variety of the engine data. The DTCs and freeze frame data can be cleared with the Techstream. Refer to «DTC CHECK / CLEAR»(ref-511386-S20833347322012102600000) .
- NORMAL MODE AND CHECK MODE The diagnosis system operates in "normal mode" during normal vehicle use. In normal mode, "2-trip detection logic" is used to ensure accurate detection of malfunctions. "Check mode" is also available to technicians as an option. In check mode, "1-trip detection logic" is used for simulating malfunction symptoms and increasing the system's ability to detect malfunctions, including intermittent malfunctions.
- 2-TRIP DETECTION LOGIC When a malfunction is first detected, the malfunction is temporarily stored in the ECM memory (1st trip). If the same malfunction is detected during the next drive cycle, the MIL is illuminated (2nd trip).
- FREEZE FRAME DATA Freeze frame data records the engine conditions (fuel system, calculated load, engine coolant temperature, fuel trim, engine speed, vehicle speed, etc.) when a malfunction is detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was running or stopped, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air-fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred. The Techstream records freeze frame data in 5 different instances: 1) 3 times before the DTC is set, 2) once when the DTC is set, and 3) once after the DTC is set. These data can be used to simulate the vehicle's condition around the time when the malfunction occurred. The data may help find the cause of the malfunction, or judge if the DTC is being caused by a temporary malfunction or not.
- DATA LINK CONNECTOR 3 (DLC3)
- CHECK MIL Check that the MIL illuminates when turning the ignition switch to ON. If the MIL does not illuminate, there is a problem in the MIL circuit. Refer to «MIL Circuit»(ref-511387-S21014897772012102600000) . When the engine is started, the MIL should turn off.
DTC CHECK / CLEAR
Note. When the diagnosis system is changed from normal mode to check mode or vice versa, all DTCs and freeze frame data recorded in normal mode are cleared. Before changing modes, always check and make a note of DTCs and freeze frame data.
HINT
- DTCs which are stored in the ECM can be displayed on the Techstream. The Techstream can display the current, pending and permanent DTCs.
- If a malfunction is detected during the current driving cycle, current and permanent DTCs are stored.
- Some DTCs are not stored if the ECM does not detect the same malfunction again during a second consecutive driving cycle. However, such malfunctions, detected on only one occasion, are stored as pending DTCs.
- Current and pending DTCs can be cleared by using the Techstream or by disconnecting the cable from the negative battery terminal. However, permanent DTCs cannot be cleared using either of these two methods.
- After clearing current DTCs using the Techstream (or by disconnecting the cable from the negative battery terminal), permanent DTCs are cleared when the system is determined to be normal for the relevant DTCs and then the universal trip is performed.
| Pending DTC | Store condition | Malfunction detected |
|---|---|---|
| Clear condition | System determined to be normal. or DTCs cleared using Techstream. or Cable disconnected from negative battery terminal. | |
| Current DTC | Store condition | Malfunction detected (2nd trip). |
| Clear condition | No malfunctions in 40 driving cycles. or DTCs cleared using Techstream. or Cable disconnected from negative battery terminal. | |
| Permanent DTC | Store condition | Malfunction detected (2nd trip). |
| Clear condition | Ignition switch turned to ON after no malfunction is detected in 3 consecutive driving cycles. or After DTCs cleared using Techstream or cable disconnected from negative battery terminal, malfunction not detected when universal trip performed. | |
| MIL | ON | Malfunction detected (2nd trip). |
| OFF | Ignition switch turned to ON after no malfunction is detected in 3 consecutive driving cycles. or DTCs cleared using Techstream. or Cable disconnected from negative battery terminal. |

- CHECK DTC Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to ON. Turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes. Check the DTC(s) and freeze frame data, and then write them down. Check the details of the DTC(s). Refer to «DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART»(ref-511386-S05353409872012102600000) .
- CLEAR DTC (Pending and Current DTC) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to ON. Turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes. Clear the DTCs.
- CLEAR DTC (Pending and Current DTC without using Techstream) Perform either of the following operations: Disconnect the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal for more than 1 minute. Remove the EFI MAIN and ETCS fuses from the engine room relay block located inside the engine compartment for more than 1 minute.
- CLEAR PERMANENT DTC HINT: Even if the following procedure is not performed, permanent DTCs are cleared if no malfunctions are detected during 3 consecutive driving cycles. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to ON. Turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes. Check if permanent DTCs are stored. HINT: If permanent DTCs are not output, it is not necessary to continue this procedure. Clear DTCs. Perform the universal trip. Idle the engine for 30 seconds or more. Drive the vehicle at 40 km/h (25 mph) or more for a total of 5 minutes or more. HINT: It is possible to complete the drive pattern even if the vehicle decelerates to less than 40 km/h (25 mph) during the driving cycle, provided that the vehicle is driven at 40 km/h (25 mph) or more for a total of 5 minutes. When accelerating through the gears, make sure the vehicle is driven so all gears are used in order and no gears are skipped. Allow 10 minutes or more to elapse from the time the engine is started. Turn the ignition switch off. Wait 15 seconds. Turn the ignition switch to ON. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes. Check that the permanent DTCs have been cleared. HINT: If the permanent DTCs have not been cleared, perform the universal trip again. The permanent DTCs are cleared when the universal trip is completed.
Scheme 496
- DESCRIPTION Check mode has a higher sensitivity to malfunctions and can detect malfunctions that normal mode cannot detect. Check mode can also detect all the malfunctions that normal mode can detect. In check mode, DTCs are detected with 1-trip detection logic.
- CHECK MODE PROCEDURE Make sure that the following conditions are met: Battery positive voltage 11 V or more. Throttle valve fully closed. Shift lever in P or N. A/C off. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to ON. Turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Utility / Check Mode. Check that the MIL flashes as shown in the illustration. NOTE: All DTCs and freeze frame data will be cleared if: 1) the Techstream is used to change the ECM from normal mode to check mode or vice versa; or 2) during check mode, the ignition switch is turned from ON to ACC or off. Before changing to check mode, make notes of the DTCs and freeze frame data. Start the engine. The MIL should turn off after the engine starts. Perform "Monitor Drive Pattern" for the ECT test. Refer to «MONITOR DRIVE PATTERN»(ref-511386-S28463559162012102600000) or simulate the conditions of the malfunction described by the customer. After simulating the malfunction conditions, use the Techstream to check the DTC and freeze frame data.
DATA LIST / ACTIVE TEST
- READ DATA LIST HINT: Using the Techstream to read the Data List allows the values or states of switches, sensors, actuators and other items to be read without removing any parts. This non-intrusive inspection can be very useful because intermittent conditions or signals may be discovered before parts or wiring is disturbed. Reading the Data List information early in troubleshooting is one way to save diagnostic time. NOTE: In the table below, the values listed under "Normal Condition" are reference values. Do not depend solely on these reference values when deciding whether a part is faulty or not. Warm up the engine. Turn the ignition switch off. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to ON. Turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / All Data. Follow the instructions on the Techstream and read the Data List. - PERFORM ACTIVE TEST HINT: Using the Techstream to perform Active Tests allows the relays, VSVs, actuators and other items to be operated without removing any parts. This non-intrusive functional inspection can be very useful because intermittent operation may be discovered before parts or wiring is disturbed. Performing Active Tests early in troubleshooting is one way to save diagnostic time. Data List information can be displayed while performing Active Tests. Warm up the engine. Turn the ignition switch off. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to ON. Turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test. Follow the instructions on the Techstream and perform the Active Test.
