Checking Wheel Bearing Rotation Starting Torque

  1. Install Front Hub Remover and Installer (MB991017 or MB990998) and Spacer (MB991000) as shown in illustration and tighten to 145-188 ft. lbs. (207-245 N.m). (Scheme 29)
  2. Hold front wheel hub assembly in a vice by using a wooden block. (Scheme 30)
  3. Rotate the hub in order to seat the bearing.
  4. Measure the wheel bearing rotation starting torque by using Preload Socket (MB990326) and Torque Wrench (MB990685).
  5. If the rotation starting torque is more than 9.12 INCH lbs. (1.03 N.m), replace the front wheel bearing assembly. If there is any signs of binding or tight spots when the wheel bearing turns, replace it.

Checking Lower Ball Joint Breakaway Torque

  1. Shake the ball joint stud several times.
  2. Using Preload Socket (MB991006), check the breakaway torque of the ball joint. (Scheme 31)
  3. If the breakaway torque is more than 4.4-30.1 INCH lbs. (0.5-3.4 N.m), replace the lower arm assembly. If the breakaway torque is less than 4.4-30.1 INCH lbs. (0.5-3.4 N.m), check that the lower arm ball joint turns smoothly without excessive play. If there is no excessive play, the ball joint can be reused.

Checking Lower Arm Pillow Ball Bushing Rotation Starting Torque

  1. Insert the bolt to the lower arm pillow ball bushing, in the opposite direction, insert the washer and then install the nut.
  2. Rotate the inner sleeve (contained washer) several times and measure the rotation starting torque of the lower arm pillow ball bushing using Preload Socket (MB990326). (Scheme 32)
  3. If the rotation starting torque is more than 4.4-26.6 INCH lbs. (0.5-3.0 N.m), replace the pillow ball bushing. If the rotation starting torque is less than 4.4-26.6 INCH lbs. (0.5-3.0 N.m), check that the lower arm pillow ball bushing turns smoothly without excessive play. If there is no excessive play, the pillow ball bushing can be reused.

  1. Shake the ball joint stud several times.
  2. Install the nut to the stud and use Preload Socket (MB990326) to measure the turning torque of the ball joint. (Scheme 33)
  3. If the stabilizer link ball joint turning torque is more than 15-28 INCH lbs. (1.7-3.2 (N.m), replace the stabilizer link. If the stabilizer link ball joint turning torque is less than 15-28 INCH lbs. (1.7-3.2 (N.m), check that the ball joint turns smoothly and without excessive play. If so, it is possible to re-use that ball joint.
