Disassembly

WARNINGTo prevent the piston rod self-locking nut inside the strut from loosening, DO NOT use an impact wrench when the self-locking nut is loosened.
CAUTIONDO NOT tighten the bolt of Spring Compressor (MB991237) too tight. The Spring Compressor (MB991237) will be broken if the bolt it tightened more than 55 ft. lbs. (74 N.m). Install Spring Compressor (MB991237) and Arm Set (MB991238) evenly and so that the maximum length will be attained within installation range. DO NOT use an impact wrench to tighten the bolt of Spring Compressor (MB991237).
  1. Using Spring Compressor (MB991237) and Arm Set (MB991238), compress the coil spring. (Scheme 21) Using Wrench (MB991681) and Socket (MB991682), secure the strut and then remove the self-locking nut. (Scheme 22)
  2. Remove strut insulator assembly. (Scheme 23)
  3. Remove bearing.
  4. Remove upper spring seat.
  5. Remove upper spring pad.
  6. Remove bump stopper.
  7. Remove soil spring.
  8. Remove lower spring pad.
  9. The gas must be discharged from the strut assembly before discarding it. Place the assembly horizontally with its piston rod extended. Then drill a hole of approximately 0.1" (3.0 mm) in diameter at location shown and discharge the gas. (Scheme 24)

Reassembly

CAUTIONDO NOT use an impact wrench to tighten the bolt of Spring Compressor (MB991237).
  1. Install lower spring pad. (Scheme 23)
  2. Install coil spring.
  3. Install bumper rubber.
  4. Install upper spring pad.
  5. Install upper spring seat.
  6. Install bearing.
  7. Install strut insulator assembly.
  8. Ensure that the bearing is seated correctly. Install Spring Compressor (MB991237) to the strut assembly. While the coil spring is being compressed, temporarily tighten the self-locking nut.
  9. Align the hole in the strut assembly lower spring seat with the hole in the upper spring seat. (Scheme 25)
  10. Using Wrench (MB991681) and Socket (MB991682), tighten the self-locking nut to specification. (Scheme 22) See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-168383-S19458108512004110600000).

AXLE HUB ASSEMBLY

CAUTIONWhen the hub has been removed, always replace the wheel bearing with a new part because wheel bearing frictional surface will be damaged when removing the hub.
  1. Fill the wheel bearing with multi-purpose grease. Apply a thin coating of multi-purpose grease to the knuckle and bearing surfaces. Using Brass Bar (MB990938), Installer Adapter (MB990935), and Base (MB991576), press in the bearing. (Scheme 26)
  2. Install snap ring. see scheme 22
  3. Install dust cover.
  4. Install hub.
  5. Tighten Front Hub Remover and Installer (MB991000 or MB990998) and Front Hub Remover & Installer (MB991017) to 160-202 ft. lbs. (216-274 N.m) and press the hub into the knuckle. (Scheme 27) Rotate the hub in order to seat the bearing. Using Preload Socket (MB990326) and Torque Wrench (MB990685), measure the hub starting torque. The starting torque must be within 16 INCH lbs. (1.8 N.m) and, in addition, the hub rotation must be smooth.
  6. Measure the end play of the hub. Hub end play should be 0.002" (0.05 mm).
  7. If the starting torque is not within 16 INCH lbs. (1.8 N.m) and hub end play is not within 0.002" (0.05 mm) while the nut is tightened to 160-202 ft. lbs. (216-274 N.m), the bearing, hub, and/or knuckle have probably not been installed correctly. Replace the bearing and reinstall.
