Removal & Installation (Lower Arm Rear Bushing)

  1. Using Rear Suspension Bushing Arbor (MB990883), Rear Wheel Bearing and Installer Joint (MB990971), Ring (MB990887), and Rear Suspension Bushing Base (MB990890), drive out the bushing. (Scheme 2)
  2. Position the bushing so that its projection is as shown. (Scheme 3)
  3. Using Suspension Bushing Arbor (MB990883), Rear Wheel Bearing and Installer Joint (MB990971), Ring (MB990887), and Rear Suspension Bushing Base (MB990890), press in the bushing. (Scheme 3) Press the bushing until its outer tube is flush with the lower arm assembly surface.

Removal

  1. For vehicle with ABS, remove front ABS speed sensor. (Scheme 4)
  2. For all models, remove caliper assembly and secure it with wire to prevent it from falling. (Scheme 4)
  3. Remove brake disc.
  4. Using End Yoke Holder (MB990767), hold the hub and remove the axle shaft nut.
  5. Remove washer. (Scheme 4)
  6. Disconnect stabilizer from knuckle.
  7. Disconnect lower arm from knuckle.
  8. Disconnect tie rod end ball joint from knuckle assembly. Install Ball Joint Remover (MB991897) as shown. (Scheme 5) Turn the bolt and knob as necessary to make the jaws of Ball Joint Remover (MB991897) parallel. (Scheme 6) Tighten the bolt by hand and confirm that the jaws are still parallel. Tighten the bolt with a wrench to disconnect the ball joint.
  9. Using Axle Shaft Puller (MB990241) and End Yoke Holder (MB990767), pull out the axle shaft from the hub and knuckle.
  10. Removing front strut-to-hub and knuckle bolt and nut. (Scheme 4)
  11. Remove hub and knuckle.

Installation

  1. Install hub and knuckle. (Scheme 4)
  2. Install front strut-to-hub and knuckle bolt and nut.
  3. Install axle shaft.
  4. Reconnect tie rod end to knuckle.
  5. Reconnect lower arm ball joint to knuckle.
  6. Install stabilizer bar so that the protruding length of the stabilizer bar mounting bolt is as shown. (Scheme 7)
  7. Be sure to install the axle shaft washer as shown. (Scheme 8)
  8. Using End Yoke Holder (MB990767), tighten the axle shaft nut. (Scheme 8)
  9. Install brake disc. (Scheme 4)
  10. Install caliper assembly.
  11. For vehicle with ABS, install front ABS speed sensor. (Scheme 4)
  12. Check ball joint dust cover. See «BALL JOINT DUST COVER CHECK»(ref-168383-S14921315662004110800000) under ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTION.
  13. For all vehicles, tighten all bolts and nuts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-168383-S19458108512004110600000).

Removal & Installation (Lower Arm Ball Joint)

  1. Remove the dust cover.
  2. Apply multi-purpose grease to the lip and inside of the dust cover. (Scheme 9)
  3. Using Ball Joint Remover & Installer (MB990800), drive in the dust cover until it is fully seated.
  4. Check the dust cover for cracks or damage by pushing it with your finger.

Removal & Installation

  1. Remove the caliper assembly and suspend it with wire so that it does not fall.
  2. Remove the brake disc.
  3. Using End Yoke Holder (MB990767) and Hub Bolt Remover (MB991618), remove the hub bolts. (Scheme 10)
  4. Install a plain washer to the new hub bolt, and install the bolt with a nut.

  1. Remove self-locking nut. (Scheme 11)
  2. Remove stabilizer rubber.
  3. Remove stabilizer bar.
  4. Remove collar.
  5. Disconnect lower arm from knuckle.
  6. Lift the transmission with a jack, and then remove the front mounting bolt on the left lower arm assembly.
  7. Remove lower arm assembly.

  1. Install lower arm assembly. (Scheme 11)
  2. Install lower arm to crossmember.
  3. Reconnect lower arm to knuckle.
  4. Install collar.
  5. Install stabilizer bar.
  6. Install stabilizer rubber.
  7. Tighten self-locking nut until the bolt protruding length is as shown. (Scheme 7)
WARNINGVehicles are equipped with air bag supplemental restraint system. Before attempting ANY repairs involving steering column, instrument panel or related components, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in RESTRAINTS.
  1. Remove steering wheel, driver's air bag module and clock spring. See «DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE & CLOCKSPRING»(ref-160459-S18313971602004021000000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in RESTRAINTS.
  2. Remove center member.
  3. Remove front exhaust pipe.
  4. Remove self-locking nut. (Scheme 12)
  5. Remove stabilizer rubber.
  6. Remove collar.
  7. Disconnect lower arm from knuckle.
  8. Disconnect tie rod end ball joint from knuckle assembly. Install Ball joint Remover (MB991897) as shown. (Scheme 5) Turn the bolt and knob as necessary to make the jaws of Ball Joint Remover (MB991897) parallel. (Scheme 6) Tighten the bolt by hand and confirm that the jaws are still parallel. Tighten the bolt with a wrench to disconnect the ball joint.
  9. Remove steering shaft cover. (Scheme 12)
  10. Remove steering gear and joint connecting bolt.
  11. Remove rear roll stopper connecting bolt.
  12. Using a transmission jack to hold the crossmember, remove the crossmember mounting nuts and bolts. Lower the crossmember until the fixture, bushing, and stabilizer bar can be removed.

  1. Align the stabilizer bar identification mark with the right end of the bushing. (Scheme 13)
  2. Install rear roll stopper connecting bolt. (Scheme 12)
  3. Install steering gear and joint connecting bolt.
  4. Install steering shaft cover.
  5. Reconnect tie rod end to knuckle.
  6. Reconnect lower arm to knuckle.
  7. Install collar.
  8. Install stabilizer rubber.
  9. Tighten self-locking nut until its protruding length is as shown. (Scheme 14)

CAUTIONFor vehicles with ABS, be careful when handling the pole piece at the tip of the speed sensor so as not to damage it by striking against other parts.
  1. For vehicles with ABS, remove front wheel speed sensor harness bracket. (Scheme 15)
  2. Remove brake hose bracket. (Scheme 15)
  3. Remove strut assembly-to-knuckle bolts.
  4. Remove strut mounting but.
  5. Remove strut assembly.
  6. To install, reverse removal procedures. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-168383-S19458108512004110600000). Check wheel alignment and adjust if necessary. See appropriate SPECIFICATIONS & PROCEDURES article in WHEEL ALIGNMENT.

  1. Remove snap ring. (Scheme 16)
  2. Using Front Hub Remover and Installer (MB991017), Knuckle Arm Bridge (MB991056 or MB991355), and Front Hub Remover and Installer (MB991001 or MB990998), pull out the hub from the knuckle. (Scheme 17)
  3. Remove dust cover. (Scheme 16)
  4. Crush the oil seal in 2 places so that the tabs of the special tool will be caught on the wheel bearing inner race (outside). (Scheme 18) Using Side Bearing Puller (MB990810), remove the wheel bearing inner race (outside) from the front hub. (Scheme 19) Install the inner race (outside) that was removed from the hub to the wheel bearing, and then Installer Adapter (MB990935), Brass Bar (MB990938), and Knuckle Arm Bridge (MB991056 or MB991355) to remove the wheel bearing from knuckle. (Scheme 20)
