Early in 2007, the new R56 will be available to the US Market. Following on the success of the first generation MINI, the second generation (R56) MINI brings many to bear two completely new and updated models - the R56 Cooper and Cooper S.

Both of these new models have been completely enhanced and upgraded. Every area of the R56 has been modified to give the customer the best possible experience in all areas. Handling, ride quality and overall fuel economy has been greatly improved by the use of new materials, engine technology and electronics.

Externally, at the first glance, the R56 does not differ much from the first generation. The R56 maintains the unique and unmistakable features that make a MINI - a MINI.

However, under the skin, the complete drivetrain has been updated. There are two new engines which are completely new and share almost nothing with the previous (W10/11) engines.

The new N12/N14 engines featured in the R56 are made by PSA in joint cooperation with MINI. These engines feature many new innovations such as Valvetronic, VANOS, direct injection and turbocharging. These features combine to make the new R56 more powerful, more sporty and above all - fuel efficient.

One of the many important benefits of these new engines is a reduction in CO 2 output in comparison with past engines.

Aside from the new powertrain in the R56, there are also upgrades to the already proven chassis, steering and suspension systems. The EHPS system from the first generation MINI has now been replaced by an Electro-Mechanical Power Steering System (EPS).

This system eliminates the need for a power steering pump and therefore reduces the parasitic load on the engine. As a result, the fuel economy is increased which also contributes to a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions.

The ASC+T and optional DSC systems have been enhanced with new features.

The DSC system is comprised of new features including the "Start Off Assistant", which prevents rolling back when starting off on a hill.

All of the body electronic systems have been upgraded with a completely new bus network. The new network includes the Media Oriented Systems Transport bus (MOST).

The MOST bus is a fiber optic network used for audio, navigation and communication systems. Data is transmitted at high speed via light signals over a fiber optic cable.

The other bus systems in the R56 are also new, these systems include new CAN based bus systems. These are the PT-CAN, F-CAN, K-CAN and the new diagnostic bus known as D-CAN.

The following sections in this training manual include the technical highlights and changes to the R56. Wherever possible, references are made to the previous MINI models for comparison and perspective.
