TRANSAXLE
The CD4E transaxle is identified by identification tag located on rear of transaxle and bottom of main control cover (side cover) assembly. (Scheme 23)and (Scheme 24).

Under normal driving conditions, manufacturer does not recommend replacing transmission fluid. Service transmission fluid at 30,000-mile intervals when vehicle is used under any of the following conditions
- Repeated short trips of less than 10 miles.
- Driving in dusty, sandy or wet conditions.
- Driving with an extended use of the brakes.
- Driving in areas where salt or other corrosive materials are being used.
- Driving on rough or muddy roads.
- Extended periods of idling or low speed operation.
- Driving for long periods in cold temperatures or extremely humid climates.
- Towing a trailer or using a car top carrier.
Transfer Case
Under normal driving conditions, manufacturer does not recommend replacing transfer case fluid. Service transfer case fluid at 30,000-mile intervals when vehicle is used under any of the following conditions
- Repeated short trips of less than 10 miles.
- Driving in dusty, sandy or wet conditions.
- Driving with an extended use of the brakes.
- Driving in areas where salt or other corrosive materials are being used.
- Driving on rough or muddy roads.
- Extended periods of idling or low speed operation.
- Driving for long periods in cold temperatures or extremely humid climates.
- Towing a trailer or using a car top carrier.
- Drive vehicle for about 20 miles or until it reaches normal operating temperature. Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake. With vehicle on level ground and your foot on the brake pedal, start the engine and move gearshift lever through all ranges, ending in Park.
- Allow sufficient time for each gear to engage. Place gearshift lever in Park position and leave engine idling. Remove dipstick and wipe it off with a lint free cloth. Fully insert the dipstick into filler tube, ensuring it is fully seated.
- Remove the dipstick and check level. Fluid level should be in the middle of the crosshatched area of dipstick. Add fluid as necessary. See «RECOMMENDED FLUIDS»(ref-149586-S07105587622002101500000) . DO NOT overfill. Check condition of fluid for contamination and burned smell. Ensure dipstick is fully installed.
Check fluid level at transfer case fill plug hole. Fluid should be level with bottom of fill plug hole. Add fluid as necessary. See RECOMMENDED FLUIDS . Install fill plug and tighten specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Raise and support vehicle. Place drain pan under transaxle. Remove transaxle drain plug, and drain fluid. (Scheme 26) Reinstall transaxle drain plug. Clean the drain plug threads and apply a small amount of Pipe Sealant with Teflon(R). Lower the vehicle. Add 4 qts. (3.7L) of appropriate fluid. See «RECOMMENDED FLUIDS»(ref-149586-S07105587622002101500000).
- Start engine and run at idle for 5 minutes. Shift transaxle through all gear ranges during 5-minute time period. Repeat the previous steps to help flush fluid from the torque converter. Fill the transaxle with appropriate fluid to proper level and check for correct transaxle operation. See «CHECKING FLUID LEVEL»(ref-149586-S39370578032002101500000).

Note. New transfer case lubricant must be installed any time the transfer case has been submerged in water. The transfer case is lubricated for life and is not to be checked unless a leak is suspected or a repair is necessary.
- Remove the drain plug and allow the transfer case fluid to drain. (Scheme 27) Apply a small amount of Pipe Sealant with Teflon(R) to drain plug. Install the drain plug and tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-149586-S34766213352002101500000).
- Remove the fill plug. (Scheme 28) Fill the transfer case with appropriate fluid to proper level. See «CHECKING FLUID LEVEL»(ref-149586-S39370578032002101500000). Fluid should be even with the bottom of the fill hole. Apply a small amount of Pipe Sealant with Teflon(R) to the fill plug and install the plug. Tighten fill plug to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-149586-S34766213352002101500000).

ON-VEHICLE REPAIRS
Various components may be serviced without transaxle removal, depending on application. For servicing of these components, see appropriate component under ADJUSTMENTS and/or REMOVAL & INSTALLATION . For additional information on testing electrical components, see CD4E DIAGNOSIS article.
SHIFT CABLE
Note. The gearshift lever has its own detent mechanism. There is no need to hold it after engaging a gear.
- Remove upper and lower steering column shrouds. (Scheme 29)and (Scheme 30). Place a.023" (0.6 mm) feeler gauge between gearshift lever and lever detent. (Scheme 31)
- Place range gearshift lever in Drive position. Hang a 3 lb. (1.4 kg) weight from gearshift lever. Loosen gearshift cable adjuster to adjust the cable then tighten cable adjuster. (Scheme 32) Remove the weight from the gearshift lever.
- Place the gearshift lever in the Park position and remove the feeler gauge. (Scheme 31) Install the lower steering column shroud. Install the screws. (Scheme 30) Install the upper steering column shroud. (Scheme 29)

TRANSMISSION RANGE SENSOR
Note. It may be necessary to remove the thermostat housing to gain access to the Transmission Range (TR) sensor.
- Place the vehicle in Neutral. Disconnect the battery cables. Remove the battery and tray. Disconnect the breather tube and Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor harness connector. (Scheme 33) Remove the intake tube and air cleaner cover. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
- If necessary, remove thermostat housing. (Scheme 34) Disconnect the Transmission Range (TR) sensor (3) harness connector (1) and loosen bolts (2). (Scheme 35)
- Using the Transmission Range Sensor Alignment Tool (307-351), align the TR sensor. (Scheme 36) Tighten the TR sensor bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-149586-S34766213352002101500000).
- Remove the transmission range sensor alignment tool. Connect the TR sensor harness connector. Install the thermostat housing. Install the air cleaner assembly. Install the intake tube and air cleaner cover. Connect the breather tube and Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor.
- Install the battery and tray. Connect the battery cables. Check the correct operation with parking brake control engaged. The engine should start in Park or Neutral positions only. Back-up lights should be active in the Reverse position only.

CONTROL VALVE BODY
| CAUTION | Do not place excessive pressure on A/C tubes/hoses or fittings when disconnecting and reconnecting the A/C components. Excessive pressure may cause component damage and A/C system leaks. |
INTERMEDIATE & OVERDRIVE SERVO
| CAUTION | Do not use a screwdriver to remove the retaining ring or damage to the case may occur. Use only snap ring pliers to remove the retaining ring. |
Note. Manufacturer does not recommend removal of intermediate and overdrive servo while transaxle is installed in vehicle. On-vehicle removal of servo cover is only recommended for fluid leakage repair.
VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR
Note. Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS), is also referred to as a Output Shaft Sensor (OSS).
