CLUTCH MASTER CYLINDER CHECK

Check the clutch master cylinder for

  1. leaks
  2. bent or broken retaining clip

CLUTCH RELEASE FORK CHECK

Check the clutch release fork for cracks or distortion.

CLUTCH DISC CHECK

WARNINGThe clutch disc contains asbestos fibers. Avoid breathing the dust. Breathing asbestos dust may cause asbestosis and cancer. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
WARNINGDust and dirt present on clutch assemblies may contain asbestos fibers that are hazardous to health when made airborne by cleaning with compressed air or by dry brushing. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
WARNINGClutch facings should be cleaned using a vacuum cleaner recommended for use with asbestos fibers such as the brake/clutch/service vacuum. Dust and dirt from the vacuum should be disposed of in a manner that prevents dust exposure such as sealed bags. The bag must be labeled as per OSHA instructions and the trash hauler notified as to the bags contents. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
WARNINGIf a vacuum suitable for asbestos is not available, cleaning should be done wet. If dust generation is still possible, technicians should wear goverment approved toxic dust purifying respirators. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
WARNINGGrinding or sanding on the clutch facings should be done only while using correctly exhaust-ventilated equipment. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
WARNINGOSHA requires areas where asbestos dust generation is possible to be isolated and posted with warning signs. Only technicians concerned with carrying out clutch service should be present in the area. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.

  1. Check the clutch disc lining surface for hardening or the presence of oil.
  2. Check for a worn clutch disc lining. Measure the minimum allowable depth to the rivet heads with a slide caliper.
  3. Check for loose clutch disc lining rivets.
  4. Using the special tool, check the maximum allow able runout of the clutch disc.
  5. Use an emery cloth to remove minor imperfections in the clutch disc lining surface.
  6. Check for wear or rust on the splines. If necessary, clean them with an emery cloth.
  7. Check the clutch disc for cracking, scoring, discoloration or other surface marks. Install a new clutch disc if necessary.

  1. Check the clutch pressure plate surface for scoring, cracks or discoloration. Minor scratches or discoloration should be removed with a fine emery cloth.
  2. Measure the flatness of the clutch pressure plate surface with a straightedge and a feeler gauge.
  3. Check the diaphragm spring fingers for discoloration, scoring, bent or broken segments and spring ends that are higher or lower than the rest.
  4. Measure the wear of the diaphragm spring fingers.

  1. Mount the special tool so that the indicator contact point rides on the clutch disc contact surface.
  2. Rotate the flywheel and check the runout. If the runout exceeds the maximum allowance, install a new flywheel.

  1. Verify the customer concern by operating the system.
  2. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage.
  3. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.

Know and Understand the Concern

To account for customer driving habits and conditions, your automatic transaxle electronically controls the shift feel by using an adaptive learning strategy. During the first few hundred kilometers (miles) of operation, it is normal for your transaxle to have abrupt shifts. The adaptive learning strategy is maintained by power from the battery. When the battery is disconnected or a new battery is installed, the transaxle must relearn its adaptive strategy. Optimal shifting will resume within a few hundred kilometers (miles) of operation.

In order to correctly diagnose a concern, first understand the customer complaint or condition. Customer contact may be required in order to begin to verify the concern. Understand the conditions as to when the concern occurs. For example

  1. Hot or cold vehicle temperature.
  2. Hot or cold ambient temperature.
  3. Vehicle driving conditions.
  4. Vehicle loaded or unloaded. After understanding when and how the concern occurs, proceed to verifying the concern.

Verification of Condition

This section provides information which must be used in both determining the actual cause of customer concerns and carrying out the appropriate repair procedures.

The following procedures must be used when verifying customer concerns for the transaxle.

Determine Customer Concerns

Note. If noise/vibration, check for dependencies: RPM, vehicle speed, shift, gear, range or temperature.

Note. Some transaxle conditions may cause engine concerns. The torque converter clutch not disengaging will stall the engine.

  1. Hot or cold vehicle operating temperature.
  2. Hot or cold ambient temperature.
  3. Type of terrain.
  4. Vehicle loaded/unloaded.
  5. City/highway driving.
  6. Upshift.
  7. Downshift.
  8. Coasting.
  9. Engagement.
  10. Noise/vibration - check for dependencies, either RPM dependent, vehicle speed dependent, shift dependent, gear dependent, range dependent, or temperature dependent.

Shift Linkage Check

Check for a misadjustment in the shift linkage by matching the detents in the transaxle range selector lever with those in the transaxle. If they match, the misadjustment is in the indicator. Do not adjust the shift linkage.

Hydraulic leakage at the manual control valve can cause delay in engagement and/or slipping while operating if the linkage is not correctly adjusted. Refer to SELECTOR LEVER CABLE ADJUSTMENT .

Check TSBs

Refer to all Technical Service Bulletins messages which pertain to the transaxle concern and follow the procedures as outlined.

Air Pressure Tests

A no-drive condition can exist even with correct transaxle fluid pressure because of inoperative clutches or bands. Refer to the REFERENCE: CLUTCH/BAND APPLICATION CHART NO. 601 to determine the appropriate elements. A clutch concern can be located by substituting air pressure for oil pressure to determine the location of the malfunction.

For example when the transaxle range selector lever is in a forward gear range (D, 2, 1) a no-drive condition can be caused by an inoperative forward clutch.

External Sealing

The CD4E transaxle has the following parts to prevent external fluid leakages

  1. Gaskets
  2. Lip type seals
  3. O-rings
  4. Seal rings
