Scheme 39: MPV

Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove steering column cover. Disconnect key interlock solenoid connector. Insert ignition key in key cylinder. Inspect the key interlock operation when battery voltage is applied to solenoid terminal "C". Attach negative lead to terminal "D". (Scheme 40) If solenoid does not operate, replace key interlock solenoid. See KEY INTERLOCK SOLENOID under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Connect the negative battery cable.

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove instrument cluster. See appropriate INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. Disconnect key interlock solenoid connector.
  2. Inspect for continuity between terminals "B" and "C". (Scheme 41) Continuity should be present. Replace key interlock solenoid as needed. See «KEY INTERLOCK SOLENOID»(ref-143050-S25248997802002101800000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Connect the key interlock solenoid connector. Install the instrument cluster. Connect the negative battery cable.

Scheme 42: MPV

Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove rear console. Remove indicator screws and lift up panel. Disconnect park position switch connector. Check for continuity between connector terminals. (Scheme 43) Continuity should exist with switch released. Continuity should not exist with switch depressed. Replace switch as needed. See PARK POSITION SWITCH under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.

Scheme 43: Miata

Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove rear console and center panel. Remove indicator screws and lift up panel. Disconnect park position switch connector. Check for continuity between terminals "K" and "H". (Scheme 44) Continuity should exist with switch released. Continuity should not exist with switch depressed. Replace switch as needed. See PARK POSITION SWITCH under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.

  1. Remove rear console. Remove gearshift lever knob and indicator panel screws. Lift up gearshift lever, selector sleeve and indicator. Disconnect OD OFF switch connector. Ensure gearshift lever is in "P" position.
  2. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage at selected connector terminals. (Scheme 43) If voltage is not as specified, inspect harness and connector. Repair as needed. If harness and connector are okay, replace shift lock actuator. See «SHIFT LOCK ACTUATOR»(ref-143050-S36683444542002102100000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  3. Turn ignition off. Check for continuity at selected connector terminals. If continuity is not as specified, inspect harness and connector. Repair as needed. If harness and connector are okay, replace shift lock actuator. See «SHIFT LOCK ACTUATOR»(ref-143050-S36683444542002102100000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.

Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove steering column cover. Disconnect park position switch/shift lock solenoid connector. Check for continuity between terminals "G" and "H". (Scheme 45) If continuity is not as specified, inspect harness and connector. Repair as needed. If harness and connector are okay, replace shift lock actuator.

Protege5

Remove the shift lock control unit. See SHIFT LOCK CONTROL UNIT under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Connect harness connector. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage at each shift lock control unit terminal. (Scheme 46) If voltage is not as specified, inspect components listed under ACTION column. If no problems are found with any components or wiring harnesses, replace the shift lock control unit. See SHIFT LOCK CONTROL UNIT under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
