Automatic Trans 1 illustration ~253 words

IDENTIFICATION

Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is used for correct application of component parts and assemblies. Number is on a plate located at top left of instrument panel and on transaxle flange (exhaust side of engine).

DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

The GF4A-EL is a 4-speed electronically controlled automatic transaxle incorporating 5 multi-disc hydraulic clutches, 2 one-way clutches (sprag and roller type) and a friction lined brake band that prevents rotation of sun gear drum. (Scheme 207)

ON/OFF and duty cycle solenoids control shift changes, line pressure and torque converter lock-up. Solenoids are attached to valve body. Solenoids are operated by either Transmission Control Module (TCM) or Powertrain Control Module (PCM).

TCM or PCM receives information from various input devices and uses this information to control solenoids for transaxle shifting, line pressure, shift feel and torque converter clutch lock-up.

Component Description

  1. Forward Clutch Transmits rotation of reverse and forward drum to small sun gear.
  2. Coasting Clutch Transmits rotation of reverse and forward drum to small sun gear (for engine braking).
  3. 3-4 Clutch Transmits rotation of 3-4 clutch drum to planetary carrier.
  4. Reverse Clutch Transmits rotation of reverse and forward drum to large sun gear.
  5. 2-4 Brake Band Prevents rotation of 2-4 brake drum and prevents rotation of large sun gear.
  6. Low And Reverse Brake Prevents rotation of low and reverse brake hub.
  7. One-way Clutch 1 Transmits rotation of reverse and forward drum to small sun gear only during driving.
  8. One-Way Clutch 2 Locks clockwise rotation of planetary carrier
