Power Take Off Unit (Tribute)
Normal driving condition replacement frequencies are not available from manufacturer. Under severe driving conditions, replace fluid every 30,000 miles. Power Take Off Unit fluid must be changed any time unit is submerged in water.
Remove oil fill plug. If fluid is level with opening install fill plug. If fluid is low, fill until fluid is level with fill plug opening. Install plug. Tighten plug to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
Transmission
Park vehicle on level ground. Apply parking brake. Warm engine to normal operating temperature. Briefly place selector lever in all gears, and then return to Park. Clean dipstick and insert in tube. Remove dipstick. Level should be between "L" and "F" marks. Check fluid for discoloration and unusual smell. If necessary, add fluid. DO NOT overfill.
Transfer Case (B-Series 4WD)
Remove oil fill plug. If fluid is level with opening, install fill plug. If fluid is low, fill until fluid is level with fill plug opening. Install plug and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
Use SAE 75W-140 Synthetic Gear Oil.
Transmission (B-Series)
Use Mazda ATF Type 5 or equivalent.
Transmission (Except B-Series)
Use Mercon III or M-III ATF.
Transfer Case (BW 1354)
Use Mercon III or M-III ATF.
B-Series
Raise and support vehicle. Loosen all oil pan bolts, except for 2 front bolts. Pry rear of oil pan and allow fluid to drain into proper container. Remove remaining bolts from oil pan. Remove oil pan and discard old gasket. Remove bolt and oil filter screen. Clean and inspect oil pan and magnet. Lubricate "O" rings with transmission fluid, and install onto oil filter screen. Clean oil pan and position magnet onto oil pan. Install oil pan using NEW gasket. Tighten oil pan bolts to specification, using crisscross pattern. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Add appropriate transmission fluid See RECOMMENDED FLUID . DO NOT overfill. Start engine, and shift transmission through all gears, ending in Park. With engine idling, check fluid level.
Except B-Series
Note. Filter change is not part of normal service for vehicles equipped with CD4E or LA4A transaxles. Transaxle must be disassembled. See appropriate OVERHAUL article.
Remove transmission dipstick. Remove drain plug from oil pan, using proper container. If oil pan is removed, discard old oil pan gasket. Clean oil pan and install using NEW gasket. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Install NEW washer to drain plug. Add appropriate transmission fluid through dipstick tube. See RECOMMENDED FLUID . DO NOT overfill. Start engine, and shift transmission through all gears, ending in Park. With engine idling, check fluid level.
OVERDRIVE-FRONT BAND
| CAUTION | Do not allow overdrive/front band adjustment screw to back out. Band strut could fall out of position. |
Raise and support vehicle. Remove shifter cable and transmission range sensor. Remove and discard overdrive-front band lock nut. Using torque wrench, tighten overdrive-front band adjustment screw to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. Back off overdrive-front band adjustment screw exactly 2 turns, and hold position. Apply petroleum jelly to locknut seal, and install NEW overdrive-front band locknut. While holding overdrive-front band adjustment screw stationary, tighten overdrive-front band lock nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. (Scheme 6) Install shifter cable and transmission range sensor. Lower vehicle.

INTERMEDIATE BAND
| CAUTION | Do not allow intermediate band adjustment screw to back out. Band strut could fall out of position. |
Raise and support vehicle. Remove shifter cable and transmission range sensor. Remove and discard intermediate band lock nut. Using torque wrench, tighten intermediate band adjustment screw to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. Back off intermediate band adjustment screw exactly 2 1/2 turns, and hold position. Apply petroleum jelly to locknut seal, and install NEW intermediate band lock nut. While holding intermediate band adjustment screw stationary, tighten intermediate band lock nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. (Scheme 6) Install shifter cable and transmission range sensor. Lower vehicle.

- Place gearshift lever in Drive. Hang a 3 lb. (1.4 kg) weight on gear selector lever. Move gear selector to first gear position, then back 2 detents to Drive. Hang an 8 lb. (3.6 kg) weight on gear selector lever. Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect shifter cable from manual control lever. Pull out lock tab on shifter cable. Remove shifter cable from manual control lever. Place manual control lever in Drive position.
- Rotate manual control lever fully counterclockwise, then rotate manual control lever clockwise to 2 detents to "D" position. Connect shifter cable to manual control lever. Push up on lock tab to lock cable in adjusted position. Remove weight from gear selector lever. Move gear selector lever through all positions, ensuring transmission is at full detent in each position.
Miata & MX-5
- Remove rear console, gearshift selector knob, sleeve, and indicator panel. Loosen locknut on gearshift selector lever. (Scheme 7) Place gearshift selector lever in Park, by pushing adjustment lever forward.
- Adjust lever so clearance between guide plate and guide pin are within tolerances, with push rod slightly depressed. (Scheme 8) Move gearshift selector from Neutral to Drive. Verify same clearance is between guide plate and guide pin. Install indicator panel, sleeve, gearshift selector knob and rear console.

Millenia
- Remove air cleaner assembly. Place gearshift lever in Park. Loosen gearshift selector cable mounting nut at transaxle. Push selector cable toward cable bellows and hold position.
- Center nut on selector cable in a no-load position. (Scheme 9) Tighten selector cable mounting nut to Specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-99150-S15406426212001062200000). Install air cleaner assembly. Move gearshift selector through all positions ensuring no components interfere with lever.

MPV
Move gearshift lever to Park. Remove steering column covers. Loosen nut on gearshift selector lever. Pull gearshift lever rearward to "R" position, to side gate of "P" position. Tighten nut on gearshift selector lever to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. Verify gearshift selector lever nut is exposed from nut at appropriate distance. (Scheme 10) Install steering column covers.

Remove center console. Place gearshift selector lever in Park. Unlock gearshift selector cable and slide lock cover in direction as shown. Ensure manual shaft is in "P". Lock gearshift selector cable, by sliding lock cover in direction shown. (Scheme 11) Install center console. Move gearshift selector through all positions ensuring no components interfere with lever.

Tribute
Remove upper and lower steering column shrouds. Position .023" (.6 mm) feeler gauge between gearshift lever selector and gearshift lever detent. Place gearshift lever in "D" position, then hang 3 lb. (1.3 kg) weight from gearshift lever. Loosen gearshift cable adjuster to adjust cable, then tighten adjuster. Remove weight and feeler gauge. Install steering column shrouds. Move gearshift lever through all positions, ensuring smooth operation.
Loosen adjusting nuts "A" and "B". With throttle lever closed, adjust nut "B" to wide open throttle position. (Scheme 12) Tighten nut by hand. With throttle lever in closed position, push down on throttle cable, and tighten nut "A" to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. Ensure cable does not come off bracket. Throttle cable adjustment should be.03-.05" (.8-1.5 mm) at nut "A". Move throttle cable and verify smooth operation.
Scheme 12
Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove selector rod from manual shaft lever. Rotate manual shaft to Neutral position. Loosen sensor bolt. Align cut groove in switch to neutral reference line. (Scheme 13) Tighten sensor bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. Install selector rod to manual shaft lever. Connect negative battery cable.

Millenia (With LA4A-EL Transmission)
- Place gearshift lever in Neutral. Loosen transmission range switch mounting bolts at transmission. Rotate transmission range switch and insert a 5/32" alignment pin. Tighten transmission range switch mounting bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-99150-S15406426212001062200000). Remove alignment pin.
- Connect ohmmeter between terminals "A" and "H". (Scheme 14) If continuity does not exist, replace transmission range switch. Install selector rod to manual shaft lever.
Millenia & 626 (With GF4A-EL Transmission)
Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove air cleaner assembly. Disconnect selector cable. Rotate manual shaft to Neutral position. Disconnect transmission range switch connector. Loosen transmission range switch mounting bolts at transmission. Connect ohmmeter between terminals "A" and "H". (Scheme 14) Adjust switch until continuity exists. Tighten transmission range switch mounting bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. Verify transmission range switch and selector lever range position are aligned. Connect transmission range switch connector, and selector cable. Install air cleaner assembly. Connect negative battery cable.
MPV & Protege
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove battery, air cleaner assembly and battery tray. On Protege, remove splash shield. Disconnect selector cable. Rotate manual shaft through all positions, returning 2 notches to set neutral position. Place manual shaft in "N". Disconnect transmission range switch connector. Loosen transmission range switch mounting bolts at transmission.
- Connect ohmmeter between terminals "A" and "H". (Scheme 14) Adjust switch until continuity exists. Tighten transmission range switch mounting bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-99150-S15406426212001062200000). Verify transmission range switch and selector lever range position are aligned. Connect transmission range switch connector, and selector cable. On Protege, install splash shield. Install air cleaner assembly, battery tray, and battery. Connect negative battery cable.

- Place transmission in "N" position. Disconnect negative battery cable, then disconnect positive battery cable. Remove battery and battery tray. Remove breather tube, MAF and IAT sensors. Remove air intake and air cleaner, then remove thermostat housing. Disconnect transmission range sensor electrical connector. Loosen transmission range sensor mounting bolts.
- Ensure transaxle in "N" position. Using alignment bracket (307-351), align transmission range selector. (Scheme 15) Tighten mounting bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-99150-S15406426212001062200000). To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Check correct operation of sensor with parking brake applied. Engine should start only when transmission is placed in "N" and "P" positions. Backup lights should activate with transmission in "R" position.
