ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION

  1. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Start the engine and turn the Techstream on. Warm up the engine. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the VVT Linear (Bank 1) or Control the VVT Linear (Bank 2) or Control the VVT System (Bank 1) or Control the VVT System (Bank 2) or Control the VVT Exhaust Linear (Bank 1) or Control the VVT Exhaust Linear (Bank 2). Check the engine speed while operating the Oil Control Valve (OCV) using the Techstream. OK Tester Operation Specified Condition OCV OFF Normal engine speed OCV ON Soon after OCV switched from OFF to ON, engine idles roughly or stalls If the result is not as specified, check the oil control valve, wirings and camshaft timing gear. HINT: Control the VVT Linear (Bank 1): Command to activate exhaust and intake side oil control valves of bank 1 (Control range: Between -128 to 127%). Control the VVT Linear (Bank 2): Command to activate exhaust and intake side oil control valves of bank 2 (Control range: Between -128 to 127%). Control VVT System (Bank 1): Command to activate oil control valve of bank 1 (Control range: ON/OFF). Control VVT System (Bank 2): Command to activate oil control valve of bank 2 (Control range: ON/OFF). Control the VVT Exhaust Linear (Bank 1): Command to activate exhaust side oil control valve of bank 1 (Control range: Between -128 to 127%). Control the VVT Exhaust Linear (Bank 2): Command to activate exhaust side oil control valve of bank 2 (Control range: Between -128 to 127%).

  7. REMOVE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (for Intake Side of Bank 1) Disconnect the oil control valve connector. Remove the bolt and oil control valve. Remove the O-ring from the oil control valve.
  8. REMOVE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (for Intake Side of Bank 2) Disconnect the oil control valve connector. Remove the bolt and oil control valve. Remove the O-ring from the oil control valve.
  9. REMOVE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (for Exhaust Side of Bank 2) Disconnect the oil control valve connector. Remove the bolt and oil control valve. Remove the O-ring from the oil control valve.

  1. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below. Standard Resistance Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition 1 - 2 20°C (68°F) 6.9 to 7.9 ohms If the result is not as specified, replace the oil control valve assembly. Connect the battery positive (+) lead to terminal 1 and the negative (-) lead to terminal 2, and check the movement of the valve. OK Condition Specified Condition Battery positive (+) voltage is applied Valve moves in left arrow direction shown in the illustration Battery positive (+) voltage is cut off Valve moves in right arrow direction shown in the illustration If the result is not as specified, replace the oil control valve assembly. If the valve cannot return properly because of foreign matter, a small pressure leak in the advanced direction may occur and a DTC may be output.
  1. CHECK THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY Check the throttle control motor operating sounds. Turn the engine switch on (IG). When depressing the accelerator pedal, check the operating sound of the running motor. Make sure that no friction noises are emitted from the motor. If friction noise exists, replace the throttle body assembly. Check the throttle position sensor. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the engine switch on (IG). Turn the Techstream main switch on. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / All Data / Throttle Sensor Position. Depress the accelerator pedal. When the throttle valve is fully opened, check that the value of "Throttle Sensor Position" is within the specification. Standard throttle valve opening percentage 60% or more HINT: When checking the standard throttle valve opening percentage, the shift lever should be in N. If the percentage is less than 60%, replace the throttle body assembly.

  10. REMOVE THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY Disconnect the 2 water by-pass hoses. Disconnect the throttle position sensor and control motor connector. Remove the 4 bolts, throttle body and gasket. Remove the 2 water by-pass hoses from the throttle body.

  1. INSPECT THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY Check the throttle valve. Check that the throttle valve opens and closes smoothly. Check that there is no sludge accumulating around the throttle body. Check the throttle control motor. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below. Standard Resistance Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition 1 (M-) - 2 (M+) 20°C (68°F) 0.3 to 100 ohms If the result is not as specified, replace the throttle body assembly.

Scheme 12: INSTALLATION
  1. INSTALL THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY Install the 2 water by-pass hoses to the throttle body. Install a new gasket to the intake air surge tank. HINT: Align the protrusion of the gasket with the groove of the intake air surge tank. Install the throttle body with the 4 bolts. Torque: 10 N*m ( 102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf) Connect the throttle position sensor and control motor connector. Connect the 2 water by-pass hoses.
  2. INSTALL AIR CLEANER HOSE ASSEMBLY . Refer to «INSTALLATION - Step 10»(ref-385209-S03381998992011021400000)
  3. ADD ENGINE COOLANT . Refer to «REPLACEMENT - Step 8»(ref-385178-S12545599612011021400000)

  5. CHECK THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY See step 1

  9. PERFORM INITIALIZATION NOTE: Be sure to perform this procedure after reassembling the throttle body assembly or removing and reinstalling any throttle body component. Perform the following procedure after replacing the ECM, throttle body assembly or any throttle body components. The following procedure should also be performed if the throttle body is cleaned. Be sure to perform this procedure after reconnecting the battery cable and replacing the ECM. Disconnect the EFI MAIN fuse at the same time. Wait at least 60 seconds and reconnect the fuses. Turn the engine switch on (IG) without operating the accelerator pedal. NOTE: If the accelerator pedal is operated, perform the above steps again. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3 and clear the DTCs. Refer to «DTC CHECK / CLEAR»(ref-385195-S41751571112011021400000) . Start the engine and check that the MIL is not illuminated and that the idle speed is within the specified range when the A/C is switched off after the engine is warmed up. Standard Condition Engine Idle Speed A/C switched off 650 to 750 rpm NOTE: Be sure to perform this step with all accessories off. Make sure that the shift lever is in N of P. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ETC / Data List / All Data / Throttle Sensor Position. Sensor Output. Fully depress the accelerator pedal and check that the value is 60% or more. Perform a road test and confirm that there are no abnormalities.
  10. INSTALL V-BANK COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY . Refer to «INSTALLATION - Step 72»(ref-385174-S00374765622011021400000)

  3. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL NOTE: w/ Navigation System: After the engine switch is turned off, the HDD navigation system requires approximately 6 minutes to record various types of memory and settings. As a result, after turning the engine switch off, wait 6 minutes or more before disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal. When disconnecting the cable, some systems need to be initialized after the cable is reconnected. Refer to «INITIALIZATION»(ref-385196-S36681500272011021400000) .
  4. DISCONNECT CONNECTOR HOLDER BLOCK Remove the 3 bolts and move the connector holder block so that the ECM can be removed in the next step.
  5. REMOVE ECM Raise the 2 levers while pushing the locks on the 2 levers. NOTE: Make sure that the lock levers are raised 90° as shown in the illustration before disconnecting the connectors. Failure to do this may cause the connectors to break. Disconnect the 2 connectors. Remove the 4 bolts and ECM.
  6. REMOVE GASKET Peel off the gasket. Spray gasket remover or equivalent on the remaining tape of the gasket. NOTE: When using gasket remover or equivalent, cover the ECM connectors with a cloth. Remove the tape of the gasket without using bladed objects.

  1. INSTALL GASKET Clean the ECM seal surface with non-residue solvent. Attach a new gasket to the ECM.
  2. INSTALL ECM Install the ECM with the 4 bolts. Torque: 8.0 N*m ( 82 kgf*cm, 71 in.*lbf) NOTE: Make sure the gasket is not folded or caught on any area of the surrounding part. Make sure there is no foreign matter caught between the gasket and surrounding part. Do not damage the gasket. Connect the 2 ECM connectors and push each lock lever down to lock the ECM connectors. NOTE: Make sure that the lock levers are raised 90° before connecting the ECM connectors. Failure to do this may cause the lock lever and terminals to break. Do not twist the wire harness when connecting the ECM connectors.
  3. INSTALL CONNECTOR HOLDER BLOCK Install the connector holder block with the 3 bolts. Torque: 8.0 N*m ( 82 kgf*cm, 71 in.*lbf)
  4. CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL NOTE: When disconnecting the cable, some systems need to be initialized after the cable is reconnected. Refer to «INITIALIZATION»(ref-385196-S36681500272011021400000) .

  1. INSPECT ACCELERATOR PEDAL ASSEMBLY Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the engine switch on (IG). Turn the Techstream main switch on. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / ETCS / Accel Sensor Out No. 1 and Accel Sensor Out No. 2. Read the value displayed on the Techstream. Standard Voltage Accelerator Pedal Operations Accel Sensor Out No. 1 Accel Sensor Out No. 2 Released 0.5 to 1.1 V 1.2 to 2.0 V Depressed 2.6 to 4.5 V 3.4 to 5.3 V If the result is not as specified, check the accelerator pedal, wire harness and ECM.

  2. REMOVE ACCELERATOR PEDAL ASSEMBLY Disconnect the accelerator pedal position sensor connector. Remove the 2 nuts and accelerator pedal.
  1. INSPECT POWER STEERING OIL PRESSURE SWITCH Check the oil pressure switch. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the engine switch on (IG). Turn the Techstream main switch on. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / All Data / Power Steering pressure. Start the engine. Operate the steering wheel while idling, and read the value on the Techstream. Standard Measurement Condition Specified Condition Power steering not operating 0 to 2 MPa (0 to 20 kgf/cm 2 , 0 to 290 psi) Power steering operating Values change from above value If not as specified, check for DTCs. Refer to «DTC CHECK / CLEAR»(ref-385195-S41751571112011021400000) . If the power steering system inspection results are normal and a DTC is not output, replace the power steering oil pressure switch. Inspect the power steering system. Refer to «ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION»(ref-385176-S20941920602011021400000) . If the power steering system inspection results are normal and a DTC is not output, replace the power steering oil pressure switch.

  15. REMOVE FRONT HEIGHT CONTROL SENSOR SUB-ASSEMBLY RH Disconnect the connector. Remove the nut, bolt and sensor.
  16. REMOVE POWER STEERING OIL PRESSURE SWITCH Disconnect the switch connector. Using a 24 mm deep socket wrench, remove the oil pressure switch. Remove the O-ring.
